LoL: "A US government map of Africa mislabeled every country during a state department presentation at a global conference in Brazil this week, causing a stir among attenders who took screenshots and posted them online. Reuters viewed a video of the presentation given at the Aids 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro, which shows the errant map displayed halfway during a presentation about the state department’s new health agreements. A Reuters analysis found the image of the map included in the presentation contained an artificial intelligence watermark that signals it was made with OpenAI tools. The company said it was investigating the report. The state ‌department said it took “full responsibility” ‌for the confusion caused and that the map had been produced by a team member who hastily changed ‌the slide deck before the event." https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/30/government-map-mislabels-african-countries?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other #USA #Africa #Geography #Imperialism #Neocolonialism

Manitoulin Island: The World's Largest Freshwater Island 🌊 Manitoulin Island is the world’s largest freshwater island located in Lake Huron The current name of the island is the English version, via French, of the Ottawa or Ojibwe name Manidoowaaling (ᒪᓂᑝᐙᓕᓐᒃ). It's home to hiking trails, Indigenous communities, and serene beaches. You can even find lakes *on* the island—with islands in them! 🇨🇦 #Canada #Geography #GreatLakes #IndigenousCulture https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manitoulin_Island

I think this was done before, but a modern and extensive mapping of the world's dunes is still welcomed (most are in N. Africa, Central Asia, Australis and Arabia, unsurprising). Link: https://nature.com/articles/s41467-026-75466-y #Dunes #Landforms #Geography

Fjaðrárgljúfur, a massive, steep-walled canyon located in South Iceland. It was carved out roughly 9,000 years ago during the last Ice Age as glacial meltwater eroded the soft volcanic bedrock. #geography #geology #nature #photo #moss

Interesting, I can't find any hills (as I would expect) in Cerro Gordo, Iowa. It's flat. Like most of Iowa is... all falt. Curious where "Cerro Gordo" comes from. #geography

London had TWO chances to be completely redesigned — after the Great Fire and after the Blitz. Both times, planners drew bold new blueprints. Both times, the city rebuilt on its old medieval streets instead.🗺️ #London #Geography #History https://www.ryanjhite.com/2026/07/09/london-the-capital-city-britain-never-actually-built/

Ofcourse Trump will start talking to Iran again in a few days/week, because the war is for him simply unwinnable, because of geography. Iran knows that. #Trump #Iran #USA #geography #geopolitics

#Toronto does a terrible job of explaining its history. Cycled to a place near the Humber River, in Toronto, south of Eglinton and between Jane St. and Scarlett Rd. There is barley any mention that here, near Jane and Eglinton, was a large Late Iroquoian Village (circa A.D. 1400–1650). You sort of have to stumble on this info, and the physical site doesn't even have a plaque. The archeological remains are under Roseland P.S. https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/35983417 You'll recognize this sport by the large, distinctive, antenna in Toronto's west end. It would have looked like the reconstructed village at Crawford Lake, Ontario https://www.georgetownon.ca/crawford-lake-iroquoian-village-history This a a great little area, being close to the Humber river and a where a large, old, buried, sandbar exists as a result of the ancient Lake Iroquois shoreline. #TOpoli #ONpoli #history #archeology #biketooter #Ontario #Canada #geology #geography

While AI can process information at unprecedented scale, geography gives that information meaning. GIS professionals know this intuitively. That's why AI needs you. https://ow.ly/K1Ya50ZjJLQ #GIS #AI #geography #GISprofessionals

Quick new #introduction post since I've migrated over to ecoevo.social I'm an ecologist at Penn State University with a research focus on #tree / #forest growth and #carbon dynamics. I also have a side interest in the application of geographic #theory to #nature #society relations. And I write some short #fiction in my spare time. #ecology #geography #ClimateChange
