Eswatini, the tiny African kingdom challenging China. AGI - Taiwan tries again: after Chinese pressure had forced President Lai Ching-te to postpone his visit to Eswatini, Taipei announced its arrival in the small African kingdom on Saturday, the only one on the continent challenging Beijing. The visit was initially planned for April 22-26, but was canceled after several African countries revoked flight permits following intense economic pressure from China, as explained at the time by one of the President’s closest advisors. An African Ally of Taipei Eswatini is a small country without a coastline in southern Africa and Taipei’s only diplomatic ally in Africa. Located between South Africa and Mozambique, it has launched an ambitious transformation project aimed at making the country an international financial hub like Switzerland. The key lies in the creation of a fully digital Free Economic Zone, carried out in partnership with the European banking group iSwiss Bank. History and Political System Although it is one of the least extensive countries on the continent, it holds a significant diplomatic position. Formerly Swaziland, the country took on its current name in 2018 at the decision of King Mswati III, who has been in power since 1986. It is an absolute monarchy, with approximately 1.2 million inhabitants, predominantly English-speaking, and bordering almost entirely with South Africa. Regional Dependence Its geopolitical location is primarily defined by its economic and logistical dependence on South Africa: Eswatini is part of the Southern African Economic Zone and its economy is strongly affected by regional trade relations, South African infrastructure, and access to neighboring markets. The China-Taiwan Issue However, its small size does not prevent it from having a symbolic weight greater than its economic strength. The fact that it is the only African country to maintain official relations with Taiwan makes it a sensitive piece in the competition between Beijing and Taipei. In recent days, the issue has resurfaced after the visit of the Taiwanese Foreign Minister to Eswatini, following the cancellation of President Lai Ching-te’s trip. For Beijing, Eswatini represents the last anomaly in Africa regarding the principle of One China. #Eswatini #African #China #Taiwan #Chinese #LaiChing-te #Taipei #Beijing #Africa #SouthAfrica #Mozambique #Switzerland #FreeEconomicZone #European #iSwissBank #Swaziland #KingMswatiIII #English #SouthAfrican #Taiwanese #LaiChing-te’s https://www.agi.it/estero/news/2026-05-02/taiwan-eswatini-cina-36858768/

Tv7 - Episode of 01/05/2026 On TV7, a standstill between the United States and Iran, between threats and diplomacy: with the Strait of Hormuz still blocked, tensions weigh on the global economy and fuel the risk of new escalations. Positions remain distant, between the line of “maximum pressure” supported by Elliott Abrams and that of dialogue, while China, engaged in a silent mediation, moves in the background. From Italy, the story of a generation in difficulty: according to the OECD, 80% of those under 30 still live with their parents. Amidst precariousness and high rents, the stories of those trying to achieve autonomy. Following this, the tragedy of Mount Faito: a year and a half after the cable car accident, which claimed four lives, doubts remain about safety. The testimony of the sole survivor and an investigation involving 26 suspects. From Africa, chaos in Mali, with new jihadist attacks reigniting the alarm in the Sahel. And then Chernobyl, 40 years after the nuclear disaster: a journey through ghost cities and nature reclaiming its spaces. Space is also given to Italy that is changing: Milan increasingly a destination for large international fortunes, attracted by quality of life and tax advantages. Finally, sport and memory: Adriano Panatta recounts the 50th anniversary of the historic victory at the Italian Championships and today’s tennis. And the May 1st concert, between music and rights, with a look at the challenges of work in the age of artificial intelligence. #theUnitedStates #Hormuz #ElliottAbrams #China #Italy #MountFaito #Africa #jihadist #Chernobyl #Milan #AdrianoPanatta https://www.rainews.it/rubriche/tv7/video/2026/05/Tv7---Puntata-del-01052026-35157f01-05f5-48e1-8303-eaa50565c25a.html

An active rift in the African continent has reached a “critical threshold” and will break apart soon. "We found that rifting in this zone is more advanced, and the crust is thinner, than anyone had recognized," says Christian Rowan, a geoscientist at Columbia University.
