As demand for cocoa grows, forests in Liberia are being cleared at an alarming rate. Between 2024 and 2025, one county alone lost an area of primary forest more than four times the size of Manhattan. To know more we traveled to Kwa National Forest, one of West Africa's last remaining primary forests, to investigate the environmental cost of the cocoa boom. Ashoka Mukpo reports for #Mongabay. 👉️ https://mongabay.cc/MSWO5T #Liberia #Cocoa

Forests at risk: the cocoa crisis in Liberia and its ecological devastation. ## The Deforestation Crisis in Liberia In the southeastern region of Liberia, which hosts some of the last rainforests of West Africa, a serious deforestation crisis is unfolding due to cocoa cultivation. In recent years, tens of thousands of workers from neighboring Ivory Coast have crossed the border, attracted by land scarcity and rising prices. This “cocoa rush” has destroyed more forests in the Grand Gedeh district of Liberia in the last year than any other year recorded since 2002. The article Forests in danger: the cocoa crisis in Liberia and its ecological devastation appears to be first on Sicilianews24.it. #Liberia #WestAfrica #IvoryCoast #GrandGedeh #first https://www.sicilianews24.it/foreste-in-pericolo-la-crisi-del-cacao-in-liberia-e-la-sua-devastazione-ecologica-835408.html

Illegal cocoa plantations are fueling rapid deforestation in Liberia’s rainforests to supply global chocolate demand. Ashoka Mukpo met with rangers, landowners, and migrant workers, to investigate if southeastern Liberia is repeating Côte d'Ivoire’s devastating environmental history.
