So here's the second charging frustration today. Bear in mind this is literally the first time I've ever charged away from home. So I'm a n00b learning it all for the first time. I'm not looking for help, I'm venting my spleen. I am visiting family and friends and my #EV gets about 230mi (370km) on a full charge. My mom's house is about 205 miles. So I roll into her house with 24 miles range left. I go to my friend's house and I have like 15 miles range left. I charge off his house (level 1) for a couple hours. Back to 24 miles. I look up on EVGo and find 2 chargers, both open, with the CCS1 port that I need. I drive over to them and I have 15 miles left when I get there. Both say chademo is available, but CCS1 is not. Thanks a fucking lot, EVGo. I call their support number because I don't have enough juice to hunt all over the city for something that actually does what the web site says it does. They find me one that's not far away that really does have CCS1 working. I roll in with my car warning "Battery exhausted, power output reduced." It was estimating 8 miles of range left. So I dropped it off, went to dinner. Ended up at 73% and all is well. I'll need to do the same thing tomorrow on my way home. Infuriating that the EVGo web site says something is available and offers a certain connector when... it doesn't. That web site basically has one job.

@kibcol1049@mstdn.social Every #EV I've driven lets you set a charge limit. On our #MG4, the recommendation is to set it to 80% for day-to-day driving and to give the car a 100% equalisation #charge maybe once a week. @stevewfolds@mastodon.world @andrew@social.hodgson.io

I have created a "cheat sheet" for my #EV I also have a runabout, small car I will be selling very soon that's miserly on Gas (I'm comparing against) Thanks to the Pedo King, petrol in #Australia is U$5.3/gallon or A$2.20/L Basically it costs 80% less to run the EV when charged on offpeak power (0-6AM). Practically free on Solar. It costs A$13.20/100km on Gas A$2.4/100km (offpeak) Peak load is basically x2 Another bonus is knowing every time I drive, it makes tRump and carbon polluters cry. I also have a massive 5L cc petrol 4WD trailer puller I re-mortgage me home every time I fillup, I am not thinking about. I just turned the engine over because it sat in the yard unused for 4 weeks. 🔌 Slate Auto's electric truck ships with no modem at all, and that's the privacy story. The startup's $24,950 EV pickup has no built-in cellular connection, so the company physically can't track your location, remote-access the car, or pull data from it. A phone app handles settings and charging info, but it only works standing next to the truck, and Slate says app data is opt-in and never sold. Their words: "We collect data to make ownership better, not to turn the owner into the product." The context matters. Mozilla's 2023 review called cars the worst product category it has ever reviewed for privacy, with 84% of brands sharing or selling driver data. The FTC banned GM from selling driver data in 2025 after OnStar collected location every 3 seconds. Meanwhile Ford published a patent application for in-car cameras that can read lips and facial expressions. A policy can be rewritten next quarter, but hardware that doesn't exist can't be switched on. That's the durable part. Two ~600kg BYD E6 batteries (almost) mounted to a frame. Hard work, good work. This is about 120-160kWh of storage total. The batteries are from ex-Singaporean taxis which had done about 250,000km before crashing (the cars, not the batteries). I've owned a couple and seen plenty of 400,000km taxis with over 80% SOH so I think these batteries are likely to be plenty better. The plan is coming together... #EV #BESS #ReduceReuse

It's funny how much modern #EV predicted ranges fluctuate. Obviously depending on software, but our ID.Buzz bases future range on recent past driving, I think a lot of EV brains do. It tends to do a lot of motorway and fast roads in #France and the max range prediction hovers around 320/330 kilometres. Here in #Italy it's the only car with us for a month and it's doing all the ducking about, so now the prediction is close to 400 kilometres. EVs much prefer shopping trips to motorway runs. 😅

EV cars charging measured in seconds? Coming to Carney’s Canada in a Decade, maybe. (That’s 315 million seconds) “BYD says its Blade 2.0 can charge from 10-70% in 5 minutes. And Geely one-upped BYD by saying its Golden Brick can charge the same amount in 4 minutes and 22 seconds.” On the bright side, I was watching a YouTube a few days ago talking about the various mostly-American based brands that are near bankruptcy (again). just dropped $700 into my stupid old gas vehicle for oil, rad flush, transmission and filters. I hate gas/ICE vehicles so much now. it's all so .... unnecessary. can't wait to replace it with a 2nd #ev

7am and the ground is all crispy and frosty. -3° #EV is all toasty warm, pre-heated, warm steering wheel, no frost on the windows. Next to it the diesel Ute can barely be seen under a thick layer of ice. Good thing I don’t need to run it today. It would take ages to warm up, even if the engine could turn over. Hope the battery is new because the cold weather kills those 12V batteries so often. Just one of many ways EVs are worse than diesel. https://sdc.org.nz/notes/better-ev

#Calgary and many other cities have built Park and Ride lots for #PublicTransit to increase transit useage in cities whose infrastructure is car centric. It is time for out cities to take the next step and start installing #EVcharging in those lots. One of the most common concerns people have about getting an #EV is not knowing where they can charge (not everyone has the option of charging at home). If cities installed level 2 chargers in the park and ride lots, and enforced the usage rules of those spots, it would give people who can't charge at home a place to charge their car while at work. It is also municipal budget friendly as the cost to charge can be set at exactly what it costs the city, thus making it a revenue neutral infrastructure installation.
