On a typical Linux distro, what information do WiFi access points get when you search for and use another AP?

Let’s say, I sit down in a mall, open my laptop and connect to a secured mobile hotspot. Then I do it again next week after a reboot. What information would a nearby shop or a passive malicious hacker be able to find about my device? Does my device send out identifying information before joining, like a MAC address? Is this persistent, or randomized? I intentionally haven’t specified a distro, so if something only applies to some network managers, give some details. Bonus points: what about Android phones?

I love this concept. Private blogging first where no one can access it unless you give them access. Does anyone know of similar, private first, blogging services I can share with people that wanna blog but *not* have it open to the whole internet without changing a bunch of settings? https://havenweb.org/faq.html #Blogging #Blog #Indieweb #Privacy

[Discussion:] How does *physical* surveillance affect you?

I wish to have a discussion about how physical surveillance affects you in your day-to-day life; apart from Flock and (Ring) doorbell cameras (which I believe are pretty established at this point). This in context with your country of residence, and whether in a rural or densely populated area (as (“smart”) cities typically “progress” at a faster rate). I live in a medium-sized village, in a low-density area of The Netherlands. I rarely travel long distances and visit cities, but despite that, I’m increasingly confronted with surveillance infrastructure. Maybe it’s because I know too much about it, and I no longer have the option to be unaware of it, but it eats at me on a daily basis. Most notable is surveillance surrounding highways, especially: the increased density of radar sensors (which, on their own, might not reveal much about individuals; but could reveal one’s progression when paired to ALPR data, for instance), “focusflitsers” (a (mobile) array of thermal-imaging cameras: peering through a vehicle’s windshield, supposedly patrolling phone-usage during driving, but also featuring an ALPR (which also captures the driver, besides the license plate of course), and may also be used to record speed-indications (to identify “verkeershufters”: roughly translating to “traffic jerks”)), dedicated (mobile or stationary) ALPR cameras (supposedly only for detecting warranted vehicles or “hits”: unless published in the police’s “cameraplan”), “trajectcontroles” (average speed monitoring: essentially two sets of ALPRs, calculating the average time between readings), and (now) digital speed cameras (typically at intersections: instead of adapting road design…). But I’m glad I trust my government to only store “hits” and those in violation… /s Other than that, I’ve spotted ALPRs (alongside an increasing number of PTZ cameras) at gas stations and above infrastructure (like bridges), but also built within boom gates before parking areas or recycling centers (behind a little square of darkened glass: in the base of the gate); and in, and surrounding retail areas (especially supermarkets) the number of cameras have risen (including the cameras at the self-checkout lanes: staring customers straight in the face; supposedly to discourage theft, but considering the “pay by face” concept, I fear it’s in preparation thereof). Buses, structurally driving through my street, also have (exterior) camera side-mirrors, and therefore frequently capture me. And finally the eyesore that is public-facing home-surveillance systems (despite legally not allowed to, but of course not actively being enforced: as the government would shoot itself in the foot if it did). That was my little rant, please feel free to leave yours below in the comments; I’m somewhat desperate to hear it. I’m especially interested in stories from Denmark: as even my mom (despite of the “I’ve got nothing to hide” type) noticed “average speed monitoring” cameras all throughout the country, and “speed cameras” being at the entrance of villages (which I believe you aren’t allowed to be notified about in navigation programs: which is also insane to me), when she was there on a holiday. Please be very critical of every camera you’re confronted with, including those that appear to have been there for your entire life. It’s safe to assume every camera (including old “analog” cameras: through encoders) feed back into modern, digital surveillance platforms: which allow the footage to be actively monitored by AI (often to potentially trigger an alert, which an operator could respond to), possibly retained for an extended period of time (especially when considered evidence, it may be stored long-term: on a centralized server and/or cloud storage), and is shared effortlessly over the internet (instead of requiring physical transfer).

Delighted to report that Amazon has abandoned its plans to build a datacenter here. The "lease-and-equip" model they're switching to is a lot easier to get rid of, when we eventually kick these digital imperialists out altogether. I'll raise a sovereign glass of fresh water to that. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/594164/amazon-takes-45m-hit-abandons-planned-west-auckland-data-centre #privacy #datasovereignty #imperialism

Have you ever had a meltdown because of age verification ?

This is probably not the right place to write this but I’m not sure if it’s just me so I thought I could ask I’m not going over details on what I did recently because I don’t feel confortable talking about it and it’s way too vulgar but yeah I keep getting meltdowns just because of age verification. Also I have a tendency of cherrypicking every word from other videos like the ones from SomeOrdinaryGamers videos about the subject

All mainstream messaging platforms share the same model: a single provider owns the servers, logic, and #metadata. Between political pressure and regulatory proposals like #chatcontrol, such centralization is a liability. **When Asking for Help Becomes Necessary**🤍🇵🇸

نُشر تبادليًا من: hexbear.net/post/8337308 Today I am writing because silence is no longer enough, and the responsibilities have become heavier than I can carry alone. In this harsh reality, even the simplest daily needs have become a heavy burden, and each day without support brings more fear and uncertainty for my family. Any contribution, no matter how small, can make a real difference and give us a little safety in the middle of this ongoing hardship. Even sharing my link may help it reach someone willing to show compassion. 🔗 https://gofund.me/1d3ea05b6 #Gaza #HelpGaza #MutualAid #Palestine

I got tired of constantly tweaking and fiddling with Ungoogled Chromium, which I've been using for years, so I finally switched to @brave@mastodon.social. Here, Incognito mode uses Tor, and vertical tabs work perfectly with full hiding. @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net would otherwise be my top choice, but it has some weird edge-case bugs, like the fact that not all extensions work in incognito mode. There are many good, minimal and private browsers available, but Google Meet or Netflix don't work on them (because of DRM and Widevine...) The sad truth is that most browsers are bloated crap. As a CSS person, I'm just not interested in the slow progress of Firefox-based browsers, I need latest web standards and something Chrome-based to use the modern web. Project Ladybird sounds interesting. They are writing the entire browser from the ground up, including the engine... pretty crazy stuff. I wish them luck and success. #Browsers #Brave #Chrome #Chromium #Privacy

Reminder: Proton Mail addresses have vendor lock-in

Both auto-forwarding and auto-reply are paid features, which makes cancelling & switching much more difficult. Gmail is a breeze comparatively. I highly recommend against using their addresses (e.g. protonmail.com, proton.me, pm.me) Email forwarding is available for everyone with a paid Proton Mail plan. (source)

Premium Privacy Services: are they really that private ?

I’m going to do my best to word this question carefully. I’m not privacy expert and maybe no more than an idiot. I do want to protect myself online. Which led me to privacy focused cloud based premium solutions. The idea is you can pay for a service so they don’t need to serve ads and scan your data for profit. Services like Kagi , Proton among others offer services for a fee. These services let you pay with a credit card . My question is , are these services really that private if they have your payment information ? Does it really make sense to pay to not be tracked but still have your information on file and linked to you ? Is this more of an argument of privacy vs anonymity? Am I looking at this wrong ? I understand the ultimate privacy is self hosted but for some things like search that limits options. I understand there is crypto for some of these options. But bitcoin isn’t cheap. Curious to get others thoughts on this ? Please be respectful i am trying to learn…

Are there any resources available for locating and disabling on-board SIM cards/GPS in modern vehicles?

Title. I’ve ask mechanic friends and they said to expect in dash features to be busted if you pull the parts, but I suspect Faraday caging it could be a solution. I know there’s only so much to be done about data being collected physically from the vehicle, but at least preventing it from being sent off remotely would be a win.

Ford Can Lock You Out of Your Own Car

Cross posted from thelemmy.club/post/48630530 Ford just filed a patent for a truck that monitors your face, your eyes, your emotions, and your “fitness to drive”, and won’t let you use it if the AI thinks you’re not calm enough. You pay for it. You have the title. But Ford decides if you actually get to drive it. Live feeds to insurance companies. Biometric scans running against criminal databases. Microphones capturing every conversation. This is what happens when the DADSS precedent (mandatory car monitoring for drunk driving) opens the door for scope creep. Manufacturers aren’t waiting for public debate. They’re filing patents and building the infrastructure right now. In this episode of The Long Game, we break down Ford’s specific patent claims, explore what the monitoring system actually does, and explain why this matters for ownership, disability access, privacy, and your future. This is the second domino. And it’s already falling. 📌 Sources & Further Reading: Ford Patent US20240249706A1 — patents.google.com/patent/US20240249706A1 Right to Repair Movement & Control — eff.org/deeplinks/2023/04/right-repair-movement-and-threat-right-manipulate John Deere Right to Repair Fight — eff.org/news/right-repair-fight-expanding Facial Recognition Bias Study — nytimes.com/2018/02/09/technology/facial-recognition-race-bias.html BMW Heated Seats Subscription — theverge.com/2022/7/12/23211500/bmw-subscription-fee-heated-seats-us-plans
