Is your company's data center consumption contributing to carbon emissions? Europe and other regions have experienced several extreme heatwaves due to climate change and other factors. Data centers have been also an ongoing discussion due to their environmental impact. #cybersecurity #datacenters #climate #finops #cloud #aws #sustainability #climatechange

@voorstad@mastodon.nl #Threema uses OpenStreetMap for years. All traffic of the #Signal goes over the Clouds of Amazon, Google, Microsoft & Cloudflare - they only talk about "third partys"! Especially in combination with US (Spy) #CloudAct https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CLOUD_Act And even more worse: #Google #Amazon & #Microsoft work together with #Palantir Google "This is about bringing together the best of AI, which Google clearly represents, and enabling our customers to turn their data into decisions, and those decisions into sustainable, competitive advantage." https://www.palantir.com/partnerships/google-cloud/ Amazon #AWS "We're excited to be working with Palantir to make this suite of tools available on AWS and help our customers get to insights faster, unlocking the data they already have. Using AWS, Palantir's ERP suite can help customers offload the complexity, gain faster intelligence from their data, and make critical decisions to save time and expense." https://www.palantir.com/partnerships/aws/ Microsoft #Azure "Organizations around the world will be able to make their data more actionable by using Palantir's platform for data-driven operations and decision making, powered by Azure's cloud-scale analytics and comprehensive AI services." https://www.palantir.com/partnerships/microsoft/ Get it or die stupid = there are no "free" Messenger in this world!

"When the people who built and operated your cloud would rather knead dough than touch a terminal again, that’s not a career pivot. That’s a trauma response." https://www.seuros.com/blog/aws-fired-the-human-who-made-the-difference/ The enshittification escalates... I walked away from tech almost four years ago with a case of burnout you could see from space. The intervening three years have only made me more grateful that I left when I did. (I wish all my friends and colleagues still chained to the oars had my opportunity.) #aws #layoffs #burnout #ai

So, here the fuck I am , back at it again in an #AWS environment and my #devops challenge today is: Instance Scheduler because our dev teams stand up resource shit and then forget about it, and the cost variable goes up to more than 200k a year in total fucking waste. Has anyone seen this? if you have how did you deal with it? Because right now, Instance scheduler, #Karpenter, and #ASG are the only real way I see to deal with this bullshit. #cloudops #comments

Today, we're proud to unveil AWS Crabcake AWS Crabcake is a fully managed lateral-movement compute substrate that provisions workloads across multiple availability zones using proprietary sideways-scaling architecture, automatically redistributing traffic in unexpected directions when you least expect it. Unlike traditional services that scale vertically or horizontally, Crabcake scales diagonally into adjacent AWS accounts, which your billing team will discover during the monthly reconciliation process; data transfer between shells is charged at $0.09 per GB, and cross-account diagonal egress is billed per pinch with a minimum of 10,000 pinches per request. The Free Tier includes one crabcake per month, which is enough to complete the getting started tutorial but not the second step of the getting started tutorial. #aws #AmazonWebServices #CloudComputing #cloud #parody #humor

Dear #MastoAdmin for anyone using #S3 storage I would highly recommend disabling S3 multipart uploads for a day (or forever) to see if you notice any improvements.

Pre-existing issues with Mastodon and S3, plus some recent regressions in the #AWS S3 library can cause a variety of issues, notably in the ingress #sidekiq worker, such as:

  • infinite disk usage in /tmp
  • higher outbound bandwidth use (2-4x)
  • higher cpu and memory use by sidekiq
  • higher costs on providers like Wasabi that have minimum duration charges for incomplete multipart uploads

You can do this by setting S3_MULTIPART_THRESHOLD=1073741824 (any sufficiently high value that all processed media will fit below).

Note that setting S3_FORCE_SINGLE_REQUEST=true is not sufficient, as this only impacts reading files from S3 to disk, and not uploading to S3. Increasing S3 timeouts and retries may help, but doesn't solve the issues entirely.

The results will depend on your environment and specific S3 provider, but are significant and worth testing to see if they affect you.
