There is a person I've been helping for a while who runs two instances, one #GoToSocial and one #snac. Yesterday, they suffered severe file system corruption on their device, and I lent them a hand with the recovery. For GoToSocial, they restored the DB from the previous backup and got it running again. For snac, although a few files were lost, no action was necessary... it just started back up and did what it had to do, bringing the instance back to full operation. This goes to show that when software is well-designed and intentionally kept simple, it's also easier to get back up and running when something goes wrong. In this case, snac's "files-only" approach demonstrated excellent resilience. Thanks, @grunfink ! #snac2 #snac #ThankYouTuesday #Efficiency #IT #SysAdmin #OwnYourData

Further down the #Ai perversity I #Vibecoded The local model (which, with only 2 Billion parameters is dumb as a tRump administration official) has even found room for snark; "The council has been informed on previous occasions and has thanked us for our interest." The svg graph library has various filters, of which many are newspapery. #Systemmonitoring #Selfhosing #Vibecoding #Dashboard #sysadmin #monitoring

If you could give one piece of advice to a junior Linux System Administrator... What would it be? 🤔 I'm curious to hear what lessons experience has taught you. #Linux #SysAdmin #OpenSource #Career #Fediverse

Oh no. My all-time favourite remote desktop tool that I've been using for well over 15 years, @NoMachine@mastodon.social , went from full-altruistic to full-Evil last week, by switching to a yearly subscription model. 🤢 Time to transition the whole house to a new remoting platform... 😭 What are y'all using nowadays for remoting / using headless machines? #RemoteAccess #SysAdmin #LinuxAdmin #SelfHosted

With Apple phasing out AFP in macOS 27 and Time Capsules officially reaching end-of-life, it's time to move network backups to proper SMB. If you run a FreeBSD server, you can build a fast, rock-solid, and secure Time Machine target powered by ZFS and Samba - neatly isolated inside a FreeBSD jail using Bastille. https://it-notes.dragas.net/2026/01/28/time-machine-freebsd-jail/ Keep your macOS backups running smoothly via SMBv3 (with full vfs_fruit support) and full dataset quota control on ZFS! #FreeBSD #macOS #TimeMachine #ZFS #BastilleBSD #Samba #SysAdmin #Backup #OwnYourData #SelfHosted #BSD #RunBSD #OwnYourData

Unlocking LUKS with NitroKey/Yubikey: FIDO2, HMAC-SHA1, or OpenPGP?

Unlocking LUKS with NitroKey/Yubikey: FIDO2, HMAC-SHA1, or... ##luks ##nitrokey ##yubikey ##security ##linux ##sysadmin ##fde Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
Crossposted from https://thebrainbin.org/m/linux@lemmy.ml/t/1840283 Which approach do you think is better, and why? FIDO2 HMAC-SHA1 OpenPGP (alternative guide) Or do you think there is an even better way to use a hardware security token to unlock drives having LUKS full disk encryption?

A bug in my Ansible connection plugin needed a real FreeBSD jail to reproduce. So I put three of them on an idle 512 MB free-tier VPS. With pkgbase, the base userland is just 33 MB. And persistent jails use zero idle processes. Here’s the build, the regression test, and the two sharp edges that cost me twenty minutes: https://blog.hofstede.it/three-test-jails-on-a-512-mb-free-tier-vps/ #FreeBSD #Ansible #pkgbase #SysAdmin #Devops

Replying to @CptSuperlative@toot.cat
@CptSuperlative@toot.cat @Ailantd@mastodon.art I have been using #opensource #officelibre draw for well over 10 years professionally.(closer to 20) It's only got basic primitives, but my workflow is to create my own library as a sheet. I never bought into the #cloud scam (other people's computers). #sysadmin #rosettasheet

Most WordPress cache warmers act like a micro-DDoS attack against your origin server—locking MySQL tables and starving execution threads. We engineered Cryovex Edge Prime: a stateful, self-healing cache engine with 3-state circuit breakers, direct-loopback failovers, and primary-key batch compaction. Read the full engineering roadmap from v0 to v2.6.0: https://medium.com/@martinguayott/wordpress-cache-warmer-why-yours-fails-how-we-fixed-it-21cbaaab0423 #WordPress #DevOps #SysAdmin #WebPerf #SoftwareEngineering

2.5 Admins 310: GPLFreeBSD Google wants you to use a selfie video for account recovery, LG will stop apps turning their smart TVs into residential proxy nodes, we disagree about how serious OpenAI’s agent hacking Hugging Face is, FreeBSD removes the last bits of GPL software and suffers an embarrassing git flub , and backing up to an encrypted NAS without ZFS. https://2.5admins.com/2-5-admins-310/ #podcast #sysadmin

Excited to be teaching the 5th edition of the Tunnel training tomorrow. In 4 days there be some shiny new sovereign VPNs in the wild, running atop geothermal energy in Iceland, each capable of supporting hundreds of people. One small step toward re-asserting that the basic right to privacy ought not be left to private enterprises. Rather, it should be in the hands of communities, meeting their needs, and on their terms. https://courses.nikau.io/tunnel/ #sysadmin #privacy #decentralisation

Drew the whole OSI stack because I got tired of googling which layer TLS sits on. Many years in. Still counting on my fingers. In practice I touch three of them. Physical, when someone unplugged the thing. Network, when it is DNS. Application, when it is also DNS. Presentation I had to look up. Twice. The first result was a mnemonic about pizza so I closed the tab out of spite. Layer 5 is in there too. Doing something. Allegedly. #OSIModel #Networking #DevOps #SysAdmin #ItsAlwaysDNS #Blog #Thoughts

Alles ok? Skript output ist leer = still, man merkt nichts. Service down? Alert landet direkt im Element-Chat. Läuft als Hermes cronjob mit no_agent=true. Heißt: keine Tokens, kein LLM, kein overhead. #vibeops #vserver #linux #sysadmin
