Does someone have any pointers for a crashing system? I suspect that it is related to the GPU, especially under heavy load. It is an Intel Xe GPU in a Dell Latitude 7450 notebook. Unfortunately nothing shows up in the journal. I have to wait for the diagnostic LED code again. Looking at the manual, it seems I remembered it wrong. #Linux

Unexplained Hurdles when compiling the linux kernel for arm cpus

hi gang so I’ve been working on this fully arm based homelab project and one of the things I decided to do is compile myself a Linux kernel with specific adjustments that suit my needs after building my own dtb. I kept running into errors and went into the troubleshooting rabbit hole for 3 days to no avail until I decided to try it In a different distro (Ubuntu) and it just worked?! I know I’m being very vague here but I’m curious if anyone faced a similar issue like this and I’d love to hear why

For those running Linux with Window Managers (or Desktop Environments too), how do you make sure that on lid close: the laptop suspends and locks?

Linux is cool, I can do a lot of things with it. If i set a config file in Linux, I am damn sure that it is ran every single time. The code does what you tell it to do. There is 1 thing that always seems to be “black magic”: 1) lid close and suspend 2) lid close and suspend and lock. If we ignore locking for a moment and focus on suspend. I cant seem to figure out why sometimes lid close would suspend immediately, when other time it takes 5 seconds after lid closes. On some days, lid closes would not even suspend !! Did anyone manage to get suspend work 100 %? I cant believe we have tons of great linux tools and years into kernel dev, and still suspend is a hit or miss.

I’ve been using Windows for years—it always “just worked” for me. But in 2026, I kept hearing the same thing everywhere: Linux is faster, more private, and gives you more control. So I decided to test it myself. I switched to Linux and used it as my main OS for 30 days. The first few days felt fast and clean… but as time went on, I started noticing things weren’t as simple as Windows. Installing apps wasn’t always straightforward, and plug-and-play didn’t always work I had to set things up manually. But after a week, things started to click. The system stayed fast, no ads, no forced updates—and I actually started enjoying the experience. So… can Linux really replace Windows in 2026? I’ve shared my full experience, including what worked, what didn’t, and who should actually switch. 1/3 The #GNOME developers make a lot of very dumb decisions and never allow their users to push back. Normally I wouldn't care since I don't use their environment, but unfortunately, some of the decisions impact GTK apps, including the idea of trashing decades of GUI expectations by changing scrollbar behavior. All desktop environments since Xerox Star have scrollbars that when you click below/above the nib, it moves by screenful. The GTK team changed this sane default for no reason. #linux

#Linux #ComputadorasAntiguas #cosasantiguas #ObsolesenciaSistemica

It's not really clever to uninstall a bash and don't chsh before, then logging off and panicking slightly when you can't log in back again. Wouldn't happen to me or anything, just heard that from... a friend? #linux #shell

How good do blu-ray drives work on Linux these days?

Because it is dirt cheap compared to HDDs where I am, I will be storing my movie collection in Blu-Ray. And partially because I think spinny media is cool. I currently got two secondhand options for the drive: Pioneer BDR-209EBK Panasonic UJ272 The drive will be plugged into my server (6th gen i5-6600, old desktop) via SATA. It will probably only read the disks I write so DRM is not much of a concern. The disks will mostly be used as archival storage. Most of the time, they will be transferred to SSD a few days/hours before streaming, though sometimes they may be played straight from BD-R Aside from that, most of the Blu-Ray writing software I found is GUI. So I’d also appreciate something I could control via web or CLI

They should rename "SysRq" to "SysRC". That way it can both mean: ➣ "System Run Command" ☞ "System RESCUE" Which covers all use cases. #linux #unix

Is there any point in encrypting a virtual server disk? When needed, a hosting provider can just take a RAM dump and extract the encryption key, or at least regexp-match interesting files from the page cache, right? Also, how much is the performance / resource usage overhead of a full-disk encryption? #askfedi #linux #encryption
