Vibe coding and the open-source Palantir war room
ENGLISH] The open-source scene has undergone an incredible transformation in recent years. Since its inception in the 1970s and the rise of Linux, OSS has always been perceived externally as a project centred on freedom, anarchy and the idea of ‘making the world a better place’. It was therefore always met with derision, as the actual revolution – the structural change – went unrecognised. Nor, of course, is this picture entirely accurate: OSS has been used commercially from the very beginning. IBM was one of the movement’s biggest supporters. The entire (commercial) internet is based on OSS; Microsoft is the Linux Foundation’s largest donor, and so on and so forth.
Since the rise of open-source, open-weight AI models from China, even the tech bros from Stanford and Cambridge, sitting at their Apple laptops, have become absolute devotees of the movement. It is from them that a remarkable statement originates: “Open source has left the realm of philosophy”. This has certainly been true ever since Xi Jinping’s opening speech at the AI Summit in Shanghai (A single string does not make music, and a single tree does not make a forest.).
But even the classic ‘Power to the People’ OSS and FOSS scene is changing rapidly. Whilst we hear, particularly from Germany and the EU, the pitchfork mobs demanding that OSS projects should not be programmed using AI (‘vibe coding’), Linus Torvalds makes it clear – in essence: ‘Anyone who doesn’t want AI code in the Linux kernel is free to fork it.’ And Keno from Heise Ct says that manual programming will become as exotic as writing letters with a quill pen. It’s ridiculous for the simple reason that anyone using a modern IDE has been using at least autocomplete for years. What do you think that was? A little Chinese man inside the laptop?
The projects we’re already seeing are fascinating – such as Pewdeepie’s Odyseus or openClaw, or, as shown here in the picture, the OSPalntir war room dashboard WorldMonitor.App, which processes open data from all over the world using AI and makes it accessible to everyone—and can even be run using your own local AI. This is just the beginning.

I had an idea that refused to leave my head: upload an image, slap googly eyes on it, and download the result.
Then I realized the eyes could be SVGs... and SVGs can move.
So I built https://googlyeyes.dev a browser-only tool that exports PNGs or "living" SVGs whose pupils follow your cursor.
Sometimes the best software exists simply because it's funny to make.

July 30, 1915: On this date, William Aalto was born. He served in the Spanish Civil War in the Abraham Lincoln Brigades. During WW2, he was recruited into the Office of Strategic Services through personal recommendations from fellow Lincoln veterans and underwent OSS training in demolition & guerrilla tactics. Is' alles nich fix aber Ich glaube, ich hab' hier n Konzept gefunden was maby cool werden könnte.
Wie man die letzten Tage evntl. gelesen hat, überlege ich schon eine Weile, ob ich mich nicht privat wieder mehr "kreativ" rumfuzzeln möchte - gescheitert isses meist daran das es keine Basis gab worauf ich das kreative mit meinem aktuellen Skillset anwenden soll.
Mit dem aktiven #DiDay @aalen@social.computertruhe.de ließe sich aogar was machen, da dass Re:Design eig. schon vor der #FAT26 in meinem Kanban rumrennt....

What on earth has happened to the emacs-nw (former emacs-nox) packaging!?
On Alma Linux 10.2 (RHEL clone) it pulls in gcc and git-core, make and kernel-headers, pkgconfig - which again pulls in tons of Perl packages. On top of that there are weak dependencies such as gcc-c++.
This needs to be cleaned up!

The release of China’s Frontier AI model, Kimi K3, as an open-source model is the next ‘Sputnik moment’ for the US and the West. Moonshots, arguably the most important podcast for AI enthusiasts, coined this comparison with Sputnik 1 when Deepseek emerged on the global scene and changed everything. Now, with Kimi K3, there is a model that is in the same league as the flagship AIs from the billion-dollar AI labs in Silicon Valley.
The only difference is that, thanks to its open-source licence, Kimi K3 is openly and unregulated available to anyone who wants it and has the necessary hardware. Thanks to the sanctions imposed on China by the world’s freest country, Kimi K3 has significantly lower hardware requirements than the US models. Monnshot claims a 99 per cent reduction in resource consumption in some areas. So whilst the US and its European offshoots have to build new nuclear power stations, all Kimi needs is one or two new solar panels on the garage roof.
Far more serious – and far more devastating for the US AI industry – than Chinese ‘Frontier’ models is so-called ‘Liquid AI’. Liquid AI is the marketing term for AI systems tailored to specific purposes. For instance, huge large language models (LLMs) from data centres are not required for speech recognition or image interpretation. If, for example, you want to sort your photos locally and display all the photos of your child or dog that you have on your phone, a 50-MB mini-AI is perfectly sufficient. It runs locally on the phone and doesn’t ‘call home’, neither to China nor to the US.
And so there are 1,000 use cases that require only small, extremely specialised models. This only works if the large models from which the mini-AIs are distilled are open source. As China is the only country making the world’s full-fledged LLMs available, it is undoubtedly the undisputed global market leader. And in Silicon Valley, the transhumanists can already start uploading themselves to the cloud – it’s bound to come in handy one day. Overtaking but without catching up!
