July 30, 1915: On this date, William Aalto was born. He served in the Spanish Civil War in the Abraham Lincoln Brigades. During WW2, he was recruited into the Office of Strategic Services through personal recommendations from fellow Lincoln veterans and underwent OSS training in demolition & guerrilla tactics. A #FarRight military coup against the left-wing #PopularFront gov. of the #SecondSpanishRepublic began in #SpanishMorocco on #ThisDayInHistory in 1936. Failing to take power quickly, it sparked the #SpanishCivilWar, with outside powers decisively backing the #parafascist side.

July 13, 1913 (perhaps 1911): On this date, Salaria Kee was born. She was an African-American nurse who volunteered with the Lincolns in the Spanish Civil War. She arrived in Spain on April 7, 1937; served with the Republican Medical Services, American Hospital at Villa Paz; returned to the US May 16, 1938; Also served in WW2 in the US Army, as a nurse.
