Today in Labor History August 4, 1942: U.S. and Mexico began the Bracero Program to provide cheap Mexican labor to replace U.S. workers who were being sent to fight in World War II, and to replace the 500,000 Mexican workers who were deported during the Great Depression in order to mollify xenophobic demands for “white jobs.” The Bracero program also gave farm-owners an alternative to hiring Anglo farm workers who hadn’t been drafted, many of whom were affiliated with the radical IWW. The Bracero program promised decent and sanitary housing and a minimum wage, but these were generally ignored by employers. Additionally, the workers were often subjected to racist attacks. July 30, 1915: On this date, William Aalto was born. He served in the Spanish Civil War in the Abraham Lincoln Brigades. During WW2, he was recruited into the Office of Strategic Services through personal recommendations from fellow Lincoln veterans and underwent OSS training in demolition & guerrilla tactics. In the The Bridge on the River Kwai, the filmmakers had the POWs whistle the "Colonel Bogey March" because the actual lyrics British soldiers sang to the melody in WW2 were considered too offensive for 1957 cinema audiences: Hitler has only got one ball, Goering has two, but they are very small. July 14, 1902: On this date, Ada Gobetti was born. She was was an Italian teacher, journalist and antifascist leader. She wrote articles for antifascist magazines in the 1920s. During the war, she smuggled pro-democracy literature past SS checkpoints and caches of guns & dynamite into the Susa valley. From Sep 1943 to Italy’s liberation in April 1945 Ada Gobetti ran a network of safe houses in Turin for antifascists in need of refuge. She survived WW2 & in 1956 published her autobiography based on her wartime diary, written in cryptic English code. She died March 14, 1968. On Oct 2, 1978 she was posthumously awarded the Italian Silver Medal of Military Valor for her role in the anti-fascist resistance movement. Jul 12, 1916: On this date Lyudmila Pavlichenko was born in present day Kyiv Oblast, Ukraine. Her family moved to Kiev at age 14. She became a Red Army sniper during WW2 & is credited with 309 confirmed kills, making her the most successful female sniper in history. July 1, 1943: On this date, openly gay Dutch artist & Dutch resistance fighter Willem Arondeus was executed by the Nazis. He took part in the successful bombing of the Amsterdam public records office, destroying 800,000 identity cards & hindering Nazi pursuit of Dutch Jews. Due to an unknown betrayer, Arondéus was arrested on April 1, 1943. The womb is still warm where it crawled out from. The infamous Zyklon B was manufactured by a subsidiary of IG Farben, now known as Bayer AG. During World War II, starting in 1941, Bayer AG (then I.G. Farben) had a chemical plant built in the immediate vicinity of the #Auschwitz concentration camp. When, in 1942, neither Soviet forced laborers nor the prisoners of Auschwitz were available, #Bayer established its own concentration camp, the Buna-Monowitz concentration camp. Due to the inhumane living and working conditions, large numbers of people died there or were murdered in the nearby gas chambers at Auschwitz-Birkenau as soon as they were no longer fit for work. The life expectancy of the inmates was less than four months, and over 25,000 people died on the construction site alone.
