Dock Ellis, one of baseball's greatest personalities - and a damn fine pitcher for a few years - wore hair curlers on the field during warmups in 1973. The league commissioner ordered him to stop (because ... ?). Ellis often called out racial prejudice in baseball and society. In this case he observed "They didn’t put any orders about [Yankees player] Joe Pepitone when he wore a hairpiece down to his shoulders.” American legend. 🫡 #baseball #1970s #blackhistory #hair #pittsburgh

Harriet Tubman is presented in the guise of “General Moses,” grasping a staff like the one Moses used to part the Red Sea. The intellectual nature of Sojourner Truth’s writings and speeches in support of abolitionism and women’s rights is suggested through her upward gaze, in contrast to Tubman’s direct engagement with the viewer.’

Biting sarcasm is in order… as one thing is clear, this is the most racist administration in the last 100 years. They’ve fired or demoted Black military officers, erased Black history from museums & nat’l parks, and are seeking to disenfranchise millions of Black voters. To make matters worse, some #republicans are floating the idea of eliminating the 14th Amendment to the Constitution - which is the BASIS of civil rights in the USA. Then there’s the appointment and promotion of individuals associated with #WhiteSupremacy - it’s just so blatant, in our faces. Douglas wrote that he portrayed Tubman "as a heroic leader breaking the shackles of bondage and pressing on toward a new day." Behind her and stretching back symbolically to Africa are the black men and women who toiled and prayed through three hundred years of servitude. "The group of figures to the right... symbolizes the newly liberated people as laborers and heads of families. The last figure symbolizes the dreamer who looks out towards higher and nobler vistas, the modern city, for his race. He represents the preachers, teachers, artists, and musicians of the group. The beam of light that cuts through the center of the picture symbolizes divine inspiration.”’

"Mother and Daughter," Laura Wheeler Waring, 1927. Waring (1887-1948) was the great portrait artist of the Harlem Renaissance, chronicling many of the major figures of the era. However, in this portrait of two unidentified women, she confronts a social reality. This is actually a daring painting for the time as it confronts the realities of mixed-race marriages, at the time a highly controversial subject. (Remember, the Supreme Court didn't legalize mixed-race marriage until the 60s.) Here we have the Black mother and the white-presenting daughter, looking very different but also very alike; even their noses are identical. What's interesting here is how she takes the style of classical Roman portraits (there are similar ones out there), and mixes it with modernist techniques, as well as a modern social sensibility. The two women seem almost like allies, facing the world together. Mother looks determined; daughter perhaps a bit less so, but still, they're there together. A remarkable painting! So it was only yesterday when I learned that some of the spiritual and work songs sung by Black slaves here in the US were used to communicate messages and directions on how to escape. Master Slave Husband Wife The 2024 Pulitzer Prize winner for Biography by Ilyon Woo that tells the story of Ellen & William Craft + their escape from slavery in 1848 Georgia. Ellen, whose father was a white plantation owner was enslaved by her half sister, working as a seamstress + house servant. William, her husband, worked as a hired out carpenter for his master. Ellen who was extremely light skinned disguised herself as a wealthy southern planter while William portrayed her slave in order to make their escape. The 1st half of this book is a gripping tale - the 2nd half however looses the thread as Ellen + William travel to England - their story gets lost amid the politics + the stories of other abolitionist who help them on their journey. #masterslavehusbandwife #ellencraft #williamcraft #africanamericanhistory #abolitionists #americanhistory #blackhistory #booklist #mybookshelf #books #pulitzerprize #biography

George Washington Carver, best known for his scientific innovations, was also an artist who experimented with natural pigments since childhood. These paint swatches at the GW Carver Museum at Tuskegee show the color palettes he developed using natural #clay from Alabama. He freely shared recipes detailing the process of turning clay into house paint so that those with little or no money could still enjoy beautiful surroundings. #BlackFedi #AddToBlacksky #WildClay #art #BlackHistory
