A quotation from Frederick Douglass Americans! your republican politics, not less than your republican religion, are flagrantly inconsistent. You boast of your love of liberty, your superior civilization, and your pure Christianity, while the whole political power of the nation (as embodied in the two great political parties), is solemnly pledged to support and perpetuate the enslavement of three millions of your countrymen. You hurl your anathemas at the crowned headed tyrants of Russia and Austria, and pride yourselves on your Democratic institutions, while you yourselves consent to be the mere tools and body-guards of the tyrants of Virginia and Carolina. Frederick Douglass (1817-1895) American abolitionist, orator, writer Speech (1852-07-05), “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?” Corinthian Hall, Rochester, New York More about this quote: wist.info/douglass-frederick/8… #quote #quotes #quotation #qotd #frederickdouglass #America #enslavement #hypocrisy #pretension #slavery #systemicracism #tyranny

Focus on Coffs Harbour and Nambucca Valley "NSW modern slavery report calls for urgent reform to protect migrant workers." A NSW parliamentary report into modern slavery has detailed "harrowing stories of mistreatment and harm..The report asked the government to investigate allegations of systemic labour exploitation in Coffs Harbour and the Nambucca Valley. "NSW Anti-slavery commissioner Dr James Cockayne said in a statement the report was "informed by evidence from almost 100 witnesses across NSW, including victim survivors of modern slavery, and 60 submissions"." >> https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-06/nsw-anti-slavery-report-urgent-reform-to-protect-migrant-workers/107003130 #exploitation #PALM #MidNorthCoast #HorticulturalIndustry #blueberries #CoffsHarbour #NambuccaValley #food #harm #slavery #regulation

Blackbirding by Ryan Butta

  • "Australia has long reassured itself that, despite genocidal treatment of First Nations peoples, at least it has no heinous past of slavery, unlike Britain and the US. Ryan Butta shatters this historical self-deception. The term “blackbirding” (its etymology in the African and West Indies slave trades) involved the coercion and kidnapping of up to 62,000 Pacific Islander people, many children, to labour mostly on Australian sugar cane plantations between 1860 and 1906."

"Long portrayed as somehow “other” than slavery, Butta uses forensic archival work and compelling prose to disturbingly illustrate why this was Australia’s slave trade – and how a colonial who’s-who profited handsomely from it. – Paul Daley " >> https://www.theguardian.com/books/ng-interactive/2026/aug/05/best-books-to-read-australia-august-2026

“American society’s use of Civil War to rhetorically veil the slaveholders’ rebellion has consequences. After the redemption of the Confederacy, ex-Confederates and their heirs helped create a regime of anti-Black violence by instituting a legal architecture of disenfranchisement and lynching. That is what makes confronting how we refer to the Civil War a civic imperative.” #uspoli #slavery #jan6 https://www.nytimes.com/2026/08/02/opinion/civil-war-slaveholders-rebellion-slavery.html?utm_source=flipboard&utm_content=hanspetermeyer%2Fmagazine%2FREV.HANS+RECOMMENDS

RE: https://thelounge.network/@LogicalApex/117015592498964606 indentured servitude is #slavery by #debt. #healthCare tied to #employment is an engineered debt. the usa health care by employment is a form of indentured servitude. in other words: EMPLOYMENT IN THE UNITED STATES IS A FORM OF DEBT SLAVERY. doubly so if you have debt by #studentLoans. #PuertoRico outlawed debt slavery because post-slavery plantation workers were locked into their jobs by debt ―always to the plantation owner― they couldn’t retire in bankruptcy. like today's student loans.

RE: https://mstdn.social/@DemocracyMattersALot/117015564383055179 This is the main reason employers don't want fundamental changes to the US healthcare system. Their share of the costs has increased heavily over the last two decades, but they love its impact on employee retention. This is a feature not a bug. #healthcare #affordableHealthCare

Question: The former director of the CIA, Robert Gates, stated in his memoirs that the American intelligence services began to aid the Mujahiddin in Afghanistan six months before the Soviet intervention. Is this period, you were the national securty advisor to President Carter. You therefore played a key role in this affair. Is this correct? Brzezinski: Yes. According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahiddin began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan on December 24, 1979. But the reality, closely guarded until now, is completely otherwise: Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention [emphasis added throughout]. Q: Despite this risk, you were an advocate of this covert action. But perhaps you yourself desired this Soviet entry into the war and looked for a way to provoke it? B: It wasn’t quite like that. We didn’t push the Russians to intervene, but we knowingly increased the probability that they would. Q : When the Soviets justified their intervention by asserting that they intended to fight against secret US involvement in Afghanistan , nobody believed them . However, there was an element of truth in this. You don’t regret any of this today? B: Regret what? That secret operation was an excellent idea. It had the effect of drawing the Russians into the Afghan trap and you want me to regret it? The day that the Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote to President Carter, essentially: “We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam war." Indeed, for almost 10 years, Moscow had to carry on a war that was unsustainable for the regime , a conflict that bought about the demoralization and finally the breakup of the Soviet empire. https://archive.fo/KUO0A Just a reminder

Today in Labor and Writing History July 16, 1862: Ida B Wells was born, Holly Springs, Mississippi. She was most famous for her nation-wide anti-lynching campaign, launched after the murder of three black businessmen in Memphis, Tennessee. Wells was born into slavery, in Mississippi, and spent her lifetime fighting racism and prejudice. She worked as a journalist, where she documented lynchings. She also founded the NAACP. Her autobiography, “Crusade for Justice,” was published posthumously in 1970. #workingclass #LaborHistory #IdaBWells #slavery #lynching #naacp #racism #mississippi #BlackMastodon

Today I got to visit a place where I was able to stand on the exact spot where Frederick Douglass once stood in order to tell people that slavery is terrible and bad. This is the Coffin House in Fountain City IN, and it was a stop on the Underground Railroad. https://www.indianamuseum.org/historic-sites/levi-and-catharine-coffin-state-historic-site/ #History #UndergroundRailroad #US #slavery #Indiana #CoffinHouse 1/2

"The main aim of the slave states was to block federal power—via the rule of the democratic majority—to take measures to limit or end slavery, and to prevent its westward expansion. From the very beginning, the southern slave states insisted on the national government relinquishing as much power to the states as possible—and to give them the power to block federal actions binding on the entire United States." #USpolitics #USConstitution #Slavery https://www.savageminds.co/p/slavery-states-rights-and-american
