  • "Australia has long reassured itself that, despite genocidal treatment of First Nations peoples, at least it has no heinous past of slavery, unlike Britain and the US. Ryan Butta shatters this historical self-deception. The term “blackbirding” (its etymology in the African and West Indies slave trades) involved the coercion and kidnapping of up to 62,000 Pacific Islander people, many children, to labour mostly on Australian sugar cane plantations between 1860 and 1906."

Now the father/ Senator is calling for jail time for opposing counsel, after they published nude photos of his granddaughter. Maddeningly (or predictably?), the offender (the attorney who posted nude photos of a toddler) uses his time at the mic to attack the victim (accuser), claiming she's trying to get press and taint the jury pool against his client (House Rep Max Miller). I'm at the radiology department at my local hospital. On the inside of the bathroom door is a note saying that if you are being abused by threats or violence you can call these numbers. Then there is one number to a support line for women, one number to a support line for men, and one number to a support line for trans people. #trans #transrights #abuse #violence

Norway has opened a new memorial for the 77 victims of the country's deadliest terror attack in peacetime, days before its 15th anniversary. On 22 July 2011, neo-Nazi Anders Breivik killed eight people with a car bomb in Oslo and shot dead another 69 - mostly teenagers - at a youth camp on Utoeya island. I see this headline as part of the problem. How different would it be as ‘Four women killed by men in four days’ or ‘Four women killed by male partners or former partners in four days’ or ‘Four women killed in four days by men who wished to control them’ or ‘Four women killed in four days by men who felt entitled to treat them as objects’ or ‘Four women killed in four days by men who felt entitled to treat them as chattels’. Imagine if men’s violence was always reported like this. Statements that don’t attribute agency can be read as ‘she got herself raped/assaulted/killed’, implying that the woman or girl was in some way at fault. They’re another way of saying ‘look what she made him do’. This default reading runs very deep in our culture & every framing as ‘women dead’, ‘women assaulted’ or ‘woman raped’ supports it. Imagine if we spoke in ways at attribute agency unambiguously to the men who did these things.
