#SouthAfrica #SA But it’s not an infinite supply. The groundwater recharges when it rains. When rainfall decreases, aquifers can’t replenish as much. Heavy rainfall during severe droughts could also worsen groundwater quality in instances where water rapidly infiltrates through the dry soil, without undergoing natural groundwater filtering processes https://www.moneyweb.co.za/news/south-africa/boreholes-are-booming-in-a-drying-south-africa/ #ClimateChange #UpheavalClimate #ClimateInstability #MassAtrocity #pollution #ecology #environment #climate

Eswatini, the tiny African kingdom challenging China. AGI - Taiwan tries again: after Chinese pressure had forced President Lai Ching-te to postpone his visit to Eswatini, Taipei announced its arrival in the small African kingdom on Saturday, the only one on the continent challenging Beijing. The visit was initially planned for April 22-26, but was canceled after several African countries revoked flight permits following intense economic pressure from China, as explained at the time by one of the President’s closest advisors. An African Ally of Taipei Eswatini is a small country without a coastline in southern Africa and Taipei’s only diplomatic ally in Africa. Located between South Africa and Mozambique, it has launched an ambitious transformation project aimed at making the country an international financial hub like Switzerland. The key lies in the creation of a fully digital Free Economic Zone, carried out in partnership with the European banking group iSwiss Bank. History and Political System Although it is one of the least extensive countries on the continent, it holds a significant diplomatic position. Formerly Swaziland, the country took on its current name in 2018 at the decision of King Mswati III, who has been in power since 1986. It is an absolute monarchy, with approximately 1.2 million inhabitants, predominantly English-speaking, and bordering almost entirely with South Africa. Regional Dependence Its geopolitical location is primarily defined by its economic and logistical dependence on South Africa: Eswatini is part of the Southern African Economic Zone and its economy is strongly affected by regional trade relations, South African infrastructure, and access to neighboring markets. The China-Taiwan Issue However, its small size does not prevent it from having a symbolic weight greater than its economic strength. The fact that it is the only African country to maintain official relations with Taiwan makes it a sensitive piece in the competition between Beijing and Taipei. In recent days, the issue has resurfaced after the visit of the Taiwanese Foreign Minister to Eswatini, following the cancellation of President Lai Ching-te’s trip. For Beijing, Eswatini represents the last anomaly in Africa regarding the principle of One China. #Eswatini #African #China #Taiwan #Chinese #LaiChing-te #Taipei #Beijing #Africa #SouthAfrica #Mozambique #Switzerland #FreeEconomicZone #European #iSwissBank #Swaziland #KingMswatiIII #English #SouthAfrican #Taiwanese #LaiChing-te’s https://www.agi.it/estero/news/2026-05-02/taiwan-eswatini-cina-36858768/

A new Environmental Investigation Agency report on 250+ Chinese court cases reveals that most trafficked rhino horns originate in South Africa and Mozambique. Smuggled via Vietnam and Laos, these horns are often sold as carvings in major cities, fueled by a demand that continues to decimate rhino populations. English – The Conversation | South African court orders Eskom to disclose R70 billion coal and diesel contracts – why the ruling matters by Felix Dube, Lecturer in the Department of Public Law, University of Venda South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal recently ruled that the country’s state-owned electricity utility Eskom must disclose its contracts with coal and diesel suppliers. This is a major victory for transparency in a sector that has long been marked by secrecy, financial instability and weak public trust. Eskom generates about 90% of the country’s electricity, mainly through burning coal that it buys from South Africa’s coal mines. Eskom spends R70 billion (US$4.16 billion) a year on coal and its transport alone but until now, its contracts with the mines have been kept hidden. Why Eskom lost the court case Why the ruling matters beyond this case What the judgment changes, and what it does not Read more: https://theconversation.com/south-african-court-orders-eskom-to-disclose-r70-billion-coal-and-diesel-contracts-why-the-ruling-matters-279527 #supremecourt #eskom #afriforum #southafrica

Shark network near Club Med in South Africa reignites the debate on conservation. Debate on shark nets near Tinley Manor: Between safety and the environment A proposal by municipal authorities in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa to install shark nets on a public beach has sparked a heated public debate. This project raises questions about the legality and environmental impact of such measures, which are considered highly lethal to sharks and other marine life. Authorities say that installing the nets will protect swimmers from shark attacks, in light of the anticipated increase in visitors after the opening of a new Club Med resort in the area, scheduled for this year. Many scientists and environmentalists dispute the effectiveness of shark nets and drumlines, arguing that these measures are obsolete, as they indiscriminately kill non-target species, including those protected by South African law. The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment is assessing whether the installation of the nets will require an environmental impact assessment. On February 13th, a young dolphin was caught and killed in one of the numerous nets installed along the KwaZulu-Natal coast to protect swimmers from sharks. The incident, which occurred near Richards Bay, was a setback for the region's dolphin population, which has fallen to less than 500 specimens in recent decades.
