The Russian authorities have confiscated or designated for confiscation more than 34,000 apartments, houses and holiday homes belonging to Ukrainians in the occupied parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, according to @bbcworld@bird.makeup. The properties are declared “ownerless”, with their owners required to re-register their property rights under Russian law. They are subsequently transferred to holders of Russian passports or used to accommodate officials, judges and military personnel. The large-scale appropriation of private property in occupied territory requires proper legal assessment under #IHL and in the context of the protection of property rights.

A 54-year-old resident of temporarily occupied Berdiansk has been sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Russian occupation court after being accused of allegedly providing financial support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In occupied territory, the occupying power has no right to prosecute civilians solely for their pro-Ukrainian views. The criminal prosecution of residents of occupied territory under Russian legislation in such cases is contrary to #IHL

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, @who@bird.makeup has documented at least 2,811 attacks on healthcare in Ukraine. A recent report by @msf@bird.makeup shows that the consequences extend far beyond the destruction of medical infrastructure, significantly reducing civilians’ access to healthcare. In frontline areas, the share of people with regular access to medical care has dropped from 72% to 35%, while the proportion of those who rarely receive care or have no access to it at all has risen to 35%. #IHL grants special protection to medical personnel, medical transport, and healthcare facilities. Attacks against them may constitute #WarCrimes
