Revolution is inevitable

On BBC’s HARDtalk 5 years ago, Roger Hallam was slammed across the board for saying billions of lives were at risk. The liberal climate movements tried to refute and play down the existential risks ahead. The last few months have shown ever more clearly that he was right. After all, what do we actually think the “end of civilization” will look like? Several new scientific papers from Ripple and Pearce have outlined that not only are billions of lives on the line, but that “richer humans will be responsible for [the] killing”. This month, the NASA Climate Scientist, Peter Kalmus, also added his voice to that position. The time for shying away from our existential reality is over. The precautionary principle dictates that these realities form and guide the mission of our lives - that only a revolution to change who makes the big decisions is going to save us. Today in Labor History July 24, 1777: The Boston Coffee Riot occurred when a mob of at least 100 working-class women seized coffee from Thomas Boylston, who was deliberately hording it to further inflate prices. When he refused to hand over the keys to his store, they seized him by the neck and tossed him into a cart, threatening to deport him from town, according to Abigail Adams. She also claimed that the women spanked Boylston, while a crowd of men watched. There were regular food shortages in the revolutionary period of the early United States, from 1776-1779, and merchants often exploited these shortages by inflating their prices, resulting in over 30 riots, mostly led by women. In August, 1777, there was a food riot in East Hartford, CT, in which the mostly female crowd seized over 200 pounds of sugar being stored for the Continental Army. #workingclass #LaborHistory #women #inflation #foodprices #revolution

Today in Labor History July 14, 1789: Parisians stormed the Bastille during the French Revolution. The Bastille was a fortress, armory and political prison, and was a symbol of tyranny, feudal authority and the "divine" rights of kings. The Marquis de Sade had been imprisoned there and was transferred out only 10 days before the storming. The French Revolution succeeded in overthrowing the monarchy, replacing it with a bourgeois republic. However, it sparked optimism among working people throughout the world and inspired other revolutions, like the Haitian Revolution, in 1791. #workingclass #LaborHistory #france #Revolution #bastille #haiti #prison #torture

Today in Labor History July 9, 1947: The Greek government ordered the arrest of 11,500 people on charges of plotting a Communist revolution. It occurred during the Greek Civil War (1943-1949), between Royalists (supported by the UK and US) and various Communist factions (supported by Yugoslavia and the USSR). It was the first US proxy war against Russia during the Cold War. Today in Labor History February 24, 1895: Revolution broke out in Baire, near Santiago de Cuba. This was the beginning of the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). The liberation war ended with the Spanish-American War and the U.S. taking Cuba as a colony.
