#roku just got bought by #fox, eliminating the one "easy" streaming platform that wasn't owned by Google, Amazon, or apple.
I've been annoyed with Roku for a while anyway; pervasive ads, obnoxiously unconfigurable views with unhelpful unwanted menu items, etc.
but this lit a fire.
and yeah, I've googled, and yeah, I've done enough embedded stuff i could hack together something that works even without a guide, but i want to hear from you, dear reader; i want to hear what works from real live queer nerds.

Apparently I can host my own chat relay & don't need to use someone else's infrastructure, but I haven't tested that yet.

ich wende mich heute mit der Bitte an euch, das Crowdfunding für "Break the Silence Records" zu beteiligen.
Ballo (der Typ, der Break the Silence betreibt) wurde von einem Presswerk mies abgezockt und sitzt jetzt auf einem hohen Schuldenberg. Da Ballo sich seit Jahrzehnten den Arsch für die DIY Punk Szene aufreißt, wäre das jetzt der Moment eine Kleinigkeit zurück zu geben.
Also, falls ihr ein paar Kröten über habt... Jeder Euro hilft.
Für mich ist das Ding absolut vertrauenswürdig. Ich habe Ballo in den 90ern kennengelernt, als er im JUZ Verden (Dampfmühle) Konzerte organisiert hat. Seit dem ist er dabei und meist eine treibende Kraft.

Renting in Germany means no split AC bolted to the facade, so my top-floor 1970s office got the consolation prize: a single-hose "monoblock" portable.
Plot twist: the compressor was never the problem. The window was. These things leak most of their cooling back in through the unsealed hole the exhaust hose runs through.
My fix: a cheap XPS panel clamped under the roller blind, hose port sealed with rubber tape. No glue, no marks, comes out when summer ends. Dropped the room 6 to 7 °C in 45 minutes.

After the hinges on the challenge boxes I was making turned out to be too fiddly, I decided to come up with a different design...behold, the locksport challenge tube!

How does one audit a home network reasonably? Thinking of setting up some self hosted stuff that may involve internet ingress.
I can DMZ a machine, but it's an i-dont-know-what-i-dont-know situation. Are firewall rules enough? How much should I actually be worrying about someone getting access to my local network segments?

I am prototyping paper airplanes usinge the idea of 3D-printing directly to thin paper and then cutting the parts for assembly.
I also tried using a 3D-pen. Both ways work and the planes fly pretty well. Next up: bigger plane + supercap-motor unit.
The idea is inspired by a recent video of Tom Stanton.
