Powerful Hardware Turned into E-Waste

What you're looking at is another unfortunate example of perfectly capable hardware becoming electronic waste long before its technical lifespan is over.

This is the AirTies Air 4960, an AX5400 Wi-Fi 6 mesh extender/access point featuring impressive hardware:

  • Broadcom BCM6752 triple-core ARM Cortex-A7 SoC (up to 1.5 GHz)
  • Broadcom BCM43684 4x4 Wi-Fi 6 radio with 160 MHz channel support
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
  • Two Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • Around 4.5 W power consumption

From a technical perspective, this device is still more than capable of delivering excellent performance in many home and enterprise networking scenarios.

  • The Real Issue

The hardware isn't obsolete, the software ecosystem is intentionally locked down.

Many devices like this are heavily restricted by manufacturers or Internet Service Providers (ISPs), preventing owners from repurposing them once official support ends or the service contract expires.

Meanwhile, open-source firmware projects such as OpenWrt, DD-WRT and Tomato have demonstrated for years that networking hardware can remain secure, functional, and useful far beyond its commercial lifecycle.

Unfortunately, locked bootloaders, proprietary firmware, missing documentation, and closed-source drivers often make that impossible.

Sustainability Is Also About Software Freedom

We regularly discuss sustainability, circular economy, and reducing electronic waste.

Yet perfectly functional networking equipment ends up in recycling bins, not because the hardware has failed, but because users are prevented from installing alternative software.

  • The hardware already exists.
  • The raw materials have already been mined.
  • The manufacturing energy has already been spent.

In many cases, all that's missing is the freedom to install an alternative operating system.

  • A Better Approach

I would like to see manufacturers embrace a more open ecosystem by providing:

  • Unlockable bootloaders
  • Public hardware documentation
  • Support or at least tolerance for open-source firmware
  • Longer software support lifecycles

This would benefit users, enterprises, developers, the open-source community, and ultimately the environment.

Not every retired device is obsolete, many are simply made obsolete through artificial restrictions.

This one's infuriating. Google is retroactively locking down Android, a platform that was sold to you as open, letting you install whatever you want, from wherever you want. Now there's a supposed workaround to keep installing unverified apps, but it's a nine step process with a mandatory 24 hour wait built in, buried inside Google Play Services, meaning Google can change or kill that workaround entirely anytime it wants, without even pushing a system update. You bought this phone believing you controlled it. Now the company that sold it to you gets to decide, after the fact, how open your own device is allowed to be, and it can tighten that grip further whenever it feels like it. This is exactly the pattern we've seen with smart home devices getting bricked and apps getting killed overnight. You're not buying a device anymore, you're renting permission to use it on the manufacturer's terms. 🤬 🔗 https://www.techradar.com/phones/android/your-phone-is-about-to-stop-being-yours-anger-brewing-among-android-fans-as-major-google-app-change-draws-near #Android #Google #RightToRepair #ConsumerRights #TechNews

#Ford wanted to charge me $2600 for the little C-Clip that holds the rod in place. ($2600 is the price of a new Turbo, they don't sell the C-Clip separately) Cost me 42 cents and all of 10 minutes to install (and most of that was getting the jack out and putting it away.) #enshitifcation #righttorepair

Someone help me understand what possible reason the manudacturer of this power adapter for my google home hub has for making the text so impossible to read without a magnifying device and a high clntrast filter... Seriously. This information is here so you can understand what sort of power supply you need when your kids (or cat) knock your device off of a shelf and the plug breaks off. Why make it impossible to read? And this isn't only Google. It happens on a ton of devices. Is it so I have to call them for a replacement? Or is it just aesthetics? #righttorepair

A repair job landed at TOG last night: Buzz Lightyear had lost his voice. 🚀 Gary opened him up, tracked down the problem and installed a replacement speaker. @gdmalan@infosec.exchange @maddad@mastodon.world @ZoidbergForPresident@kolektiva.social @nakal@mastodon.social @arstechnica@mastodon.social A) applies to all #Fairphone|s. B) is a "you" problem on their part and chaining oneself to proprietary crap will be their downfall. And going with #Motorola which produces a fuckton of #EoL'd devices out of the gate and refuses to comply with @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu 's #RightToRepair is not inspiring confidence in #GrapheneOS to me. But hey, a concrete-headed & abrasive maintainer is running it into the ground… #sarcasm #commentary

Bought a second-hand #ThinkPad L14 Gen 2a (#AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U). Plenty fast enough for what I do, at about 15% of the price of a current model. Installed #FedoraLinux and, so far, everything works, even the fingerprint reader. Repairable, upgradeable, and a small reminder that we don't always need the latest hardware. #FrugalComputing #RightToRepair

I've been using my iFixit precision bit kit for years to crack open phones, laptops, and random electronics that had no business being that hard to open. Today, completely out of nowhere, it finally clicked. The kits come in sets of 16, 32, or 64 bits. Not 15. Not 20. Not some "nice round number for humans." 16, 32, 64. As in literal computer bits. Well played, iFixit. Well played. 😅 #NerdHumor #iFixit #RightToRepair #TechJokes #ITookTooLongToGetThis

Finally got around to helping a friend with a phone repair today: shattered back glass + new battery on an iPhone 15 Pro. Waterproofing + glue everywhere made getting inside an absolute nightmare. Removing the shattered back glass was the worst part. Tiny shards everywhere, so much tedious, careful work. 😩 Job's done, phone's fixed, but that was NOT a fun repair. Seriously though, why do manufacturers keep using brittle glass for the backs of $1000+ phones? Sturdy plastic would survive drops so much better and repairs wouldn't be a shard-hunting nightmare. #RightToRepair #iPhone #TechRepair #Mastodon

I like keeping old tech as long as possible. My desktop PC is a Dell Optiplex 9020, which I intercepted on its way to e-waste from a local primary school. Maybe a 2013 model. I just did a bit of minor maintenance, replacing the CMOS battery. Now I don't have to manually select UEFI mode at every boot. Previously I souped it up a bit, adding a SSD. There was no slot for an additional device and I wanted to keep the big drive, so the SSD just floats between the drive bay and the CPU fan. Seems to be a perfectly cromulent way of doing it. #RightToRepair

RT: @iFixit Replaceable batteries are not a fantasy, companies just needed a legal shove. EU rules are already pushing Nintendo and Amazon toward more repairable devices, from Switch hardware with replaceable batteries to signs of Kindle battery replacement kits and guides. That does not mean the fight is over. Parts pairing, regional lockouts, and loopholes are still very real. But every replaceable battery is one more crack in the throwaway tech model. https://hackaday.com/2026/07/17/eu-adds-exemptions-to-user-serviceable-batteries-rules/ This is helpful but what I want is swappable standardized #Batteries. Think your flashlight when you swap out the AA batteries for a new pair. It just works, no need to hunt for brand "Makita" or "Hoover model ABC113XYZ" battery on the Internet that you cannot find 5 years after you bought the vacuum. Just go to any major store. So swappable standard small/flat size for phones, one bigger size for cordless drills/power tools/cordless vacuums, one biggest size for lawn mowers/power stations/e-bikes. Make them #Lifepo4 for longer life. I wouldn't mind the lower power capacity as much since the batteries would be swappable. Cordless vacuum cleaners are the worst. Non replaceable batteries with proprietary chargers . #sustainability #righttorepair
