I'm considering self-hosting Pocket ID to use as an OIDC identity provider for various other self-hosted services. It's small and simple and easy to understand, but there's a big gap: high availability. If I set up an instance on a machine somewhere, and that machine dies, every service using it as an IdP is temporarily inaccessible until the situation is cured. How do other self-hosters address this situation? I understand at some point there are single points of failure, but I'd like to avoid this being one. #SelfHosting #OIDC #Homelab

fazit nach ner woche #programmieren mit #opencode und #qwen3.6 27b über #llamacpp : macht richtig spass! 😎 man muss das teil zwar eng an der hand nehmen und muss gucken dass man immer nur ganz kleine dinge in auftrag gibt, aber wenn man sich mal darauf eingestellt hat, dann ists tatsächlich - und immer noch bisschen unglaublicherweise - produktiv nutzbar auf consumer hardware im eigenen #homelab - crazy

Nearly two years ago I noticed one NVME disk had endurance gone down to zero. It has been part of ZFS RaidZ3 six drive pool under constant write load. Normally I would replace such drive. But this time I decided to see how long it takes to break it. And the answer is - almost two years. The disk receives few MB/s writes *minimum* with hundreds MB/s peaks, maybe 100TB writes per year. I'll try to dig some numbers later. So, looks like there is ample headroom in NVME write endurance claims. (statistics from sample of one 🤣 ) I think I'll let the pool run sans one drive.It should survive two more drive failures. And there are daily/weekly/monthly backups available. Maybe buy new after AI bubble bursts. #homelab #zfs #diskfailure

#HomeLab help! I have #Proxmox VE and used a helper to make a Docker VM. Now I want to give that VM a fixed IP and I see that the way to do this is to log into the VM and set the fixed IP for the OS in the VM, but... The VM is running Debian 13 Trixie, which I believe uses #Netplan. So I modify the config, and do 'netplan try', and it reports that it can't allocate the IP which I think is because it's a VM. So I don't accept the new config. I tried some unused IPs. Any thoughts on this?

Full disclosure on the cost of that free upgrade. The reboot to pick it up hung at the hypervisor level and took the instance with it. Almost 15 hours of downtime, 41.91% uptime for the day, and nothing I could do from inside the box because there was no inside to get to. Worth it. But this is the part of "simple restart" that the is mentioned in email. Also a decent argument for the thing I keep saying: the box is disposable, the data is not. #SelfHosting #VPS #OVH #Downtime #Homelab #Fediverse #Blog #Thoughts

Email from @OVHcloud@mastodon.social this morning: the bandwidth on my VPS went from 400 Mbit to 1 Gbit. Same plan, same price, nothing for me to do. This is the box running dol.social. The one I benchmarked last month, on the grounds that its memory and disk beat the newer 2027 model and the network gap did not matter enough to move. The network gap is now gone too.
