You don't have to wait for the #Perseids meteor shower to peak to have some meteor scatter fun! You have a good chance of making MS QSO's a few days before and after the peak. The best time to do this is during the early morning hours. I just made simultaneous MS QSO's on 2m and 6m with the same station (WA4CQG, 821mi/1313km) using MSK144 on 144.150 MHz and 50.260 MHz. #hamradio #AmateurRadio #hamr #MeteorScatter

This image shows you why it's called meteor *scatter*. My beams are pointed at 225 degrees (SW), yet my signals bouncing of the meteor trails are heard in many directions. A tool like https://swan.ms/ can be very helpful to help you find where to aim your signal for maximum effectiveness. (Aim perpendicular to the meteor trails). #hamradio #AmateurRadio #hamr

A reminder that the Cat Pics on The Air #CPOTA contest is going on *now* on SSTV on HF and VHF, if you have the capability. Another operator has observed a reaction-seeking chud on 14.230 transmitting some symbols related to a universally despised political party from the 1930s. Don't fall for their edgelord rage baiting, but, as they have suggested, let's flood SSTV tonight with cat pics. https://cpota.app/ #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

Advice I wish I didn’t get with my General #hamradio ticket: Random wire antenna This should not be your first HF antenna. To use it you need an antenna tuner, and many starter SDR rigs have an ATU built in. In myself and others around me, the ATU gives a low SWR and the appearance of perfect operation, but you have no intuition for how much of your transmit power comes out as RF energy vs. heat At that point there are a thousand points of failure you don’t know to check, so the first time you call CW to the void you have no idea if yuure holding the mic wrong, your rig is misconfigured, or if the band is closed Work to minimize unknowns by making as many parts of your kit known quantities. This is why I wish someone told me to just get a pretuned 40m EFHW out of the gate

There’s a loud CW station on 28.070MHz … is it sending CW practice text or what? It’s prose from what I can decode. #HamRadio

Why differentiated glyphs are important, #hamradio edition: Both of these are US issued callsigns: N0OO NO0O As are both of these: NO0OO N0OOO Does your font make it obvious at a glance they are different? Or does it just all just look like someone screaming in the negative?

A few days ago I asked for #hamradio podcast recommendations. I offered bonus points for podcasts featuring women because I have noticed that I am finding almost no other women in this hobby. I am watching a video from Ham Radio Crash Course right now and he is going over some stats. Even if those are just his numbers, I think this might be one of the largest #gendergap I have ever seen. I'm too new to the hobby to make too many comments on this, but this should probably be a high priority.

#hamradio #darc

📡 AREDN: Mesh Networks Using Wi-Fi Hardware for Amateur Radio Imagine turning a second-hand Wi-Fi router costing EUR 30 into an amateur radio network node that automatically connects with other nodes, forms a self-healing IP network and runs services such as VoIP telephony, video surveillance or email gateways — no internet, no mobile network, no commercial infrastructure. I've shared this in the past (in a blog post maybe?) but it's been awhile so I figured it'd be one of those fun #HamRadio "details" things to share. When I built our chicken run, I bonded all the wire mesh panels together, because the run serves as the ground plane for my 20 meter vertical that my packet station uses. I.e. my "cooptenna"

I wonder how much crap I'd kick up suggesting the Dutch Novice Licence privileges should align more with the belgian one to encourage more people to take up the hobby, taking into account that 99% of the people BUY their gear anyway #hamradio

Someone picked up the android FT8 app, now using the name FT8AF, it's still free if you want to manually install an apk. The desktop version is, very much still a work in progress in my opinion but looks pretty promising. The android version is the easiest so far that I've had using FT8 on android with my rig. Get it from https://github.com/patrickrb/FT8AF Note: if you support the author via the android store, that version is NOT the latest. Found that out the hard way. #hamradio #ft8
