portability(TM) #netbsd #pkgsrc #tigersrc

  • alix3d3 (i586) - it finds out what uses SSE2 when it shouldn’t
  • er4 (evbmips64n64eb) - it finds out when things hardcode a list of supported archs
  • mac mini (powerpc; usually runs darwin) - it finds out when things don’t specify a c/c++ lang std
  • olimex a64 (aarch64) - it finds out when the arm drivers get too piney.
  • banana pi (earmv7hfeb) - ugh.
  • blade 150 (sparc64, bottom) - it finds out EVERYTHING.

100% not running 24/7.

@dfloyd888@fosstodon.org Au contraire, mon frère! #FreeBSD has a handbook that covers almost every basic config situation you'd face. #OpenBSD has man pages covering nearly everything I haven't gotten very deep into #NetBSD, but I'm sure its documentation is on point. #9front has... 9front has... 9front has some very nice people on fedi who will tell you turn back now while there's still time 😂 The documentation experience on Linux is various forum posts telling you to try various things, none of which work, and maybe some obtuse documentation text file on kernel.org. Egad.

Hey #NetBSD folks. I'm looking for a nice routerboard that runs NetBSD. At least four 1gbit/sec ethernet ports. I have a Banana Pi R2 Pro right now that I like. Will that work? Any recommendations? Tnx!

Installing OpenBSD on the NanoPi R2S plus Once I figured out which files to write to the SD card for the NanoPi R2S plus and in what order for #netbsd, installing #openbsd was a breeze. The second 1G network card is working—the very one that #FreeBSD doesn't recognize ;)

Pardon the French, but fuck I love #NetBSD. Had a long train ride home, so SSH’d into my Shonen Jump box at home, then into my old Solaris box, then my Pentium 1. It all still works, and it’s wonderful. Wanted to try something, built a little chroot, done. It’s all so predictable and consistent and wonderful. And… increasingly rare.

As I lost sponsoring (due to a whole location shutdown) for my @BoxyBSD@mastodon.bsd.cafe & @BoxedTux@mastodon.social in North America, I’m looking for sponsors in US and Canada. The requirements are pretty low: NO IPv4min. IPv6 /48 subnet routedNetwork (ARIN/RIPE/…) should be personalized (netname, abuse,..)Optionally: BYOIPARPA delegation for the net to my nameserversmin. 2x 500G disk space (SATA SSD or better)min. 48G memory per nodebandwidth doesn’t really matter (100Mbit is fine)Remote MGMT to systemsSponsors are being listed on #BoxyBSD and #BoxedTux on the sponsoring page and announced on LinkedIn, Fediverse and X as new sponsors. #bsd #freebsd #netbsd #openbsd #openindiana #education #learning #opensource

I've made more progress with getting #NetBSD running and mostly usable on my Thinkpad T580. I started a document with my notes on how to set up a usable desktop. Some of this information is missing from the NetBSD Guide, Wiki, and FAQ & HOWTOs pages. Some of it was buried deep in man pages, or found by extensively searching pkgsrc repository. https://codeberg.org/thezerobit/public_notes/src/branch/main/netbsd_notes.md I have yet to figure out how to automatically disable the touchpad while typing.

Various #FOSS OS communities' reactions to joining them: #Linux: "Hey, welcome to the fam! Here's a stack of CDs I burned, see which one boots for you." #FreeBSD: "Hey, we're glad you're here! Here's an amazing handbook to get you started, holler if you need a hand!" #NetBSD: "Of course it runs NetBSD! Welcome! :D" #OpenBSD: "Don't expect a lot of hand-holding, but we're all having fun with it, and hopefully you will enjoy the process, too." #9front: "Are... you... sure you want to do this?" 😆 (For the record, I love them all. I only regret I haven't had much of a chance to play with #Haiku, or interact with that community, yet!)

@cienmilojos@infosec.exchange I don't know of any OS that has an iron-clad #NoAI policy. #NetBSD comes the closest, but they even have a provision for AI being included "with permission," IIRC. #OpenBSD already has slop in base, via tmux. :/

Happy to share that #BoxyBSD remains up! Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@mastodon.bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve. But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux@mastodon.social) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). BoxedTux utilizes #Proxmox clusters as a foundation. Hope you like this small update... Over & out! #freeVPS #VPS #VM #Hosting #education #learning #learningplatform #service #opensource #BoxedTux

And... When the guy^W dev^W madman^W Absolute Programming God who is responsible for the Wii port of #NetBSD actually likes your post about running a blog on a Wii with NetBSD, you have reached a level of Meta-information I did not think was possible. 😂 Thanks for everything @jmcneill@mstdn.ca !! (Now, where the heck did I put my Nintendo Wii...?)

@jaypatelani@bsd.network Here's my Acorn RiscPC booting #NetBSD 8.3. The computer is from 1994 so almost the same age as NetBSD itself. Also quick plug, if you want to hear more about this history, come to my talk at @bsdcan@bsd.network this June #BSDCan
