AI nonsense, rant Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
I have to admit that for the longest time I was kinda ambiguous on the whole generative AI thing. Mostly because I majored in computational linguistics and I love the technology and maths side behind it, I maintain it's an incredibly fascinating invention. I did obviously realise the many ethical problems of using generative AI for all kinds of purposes that ended up in plagiarism, misinformation, harmful content generation and so on. I hated that large language models – being, you know, language models – were shoved into all kinds of roles they were not made for, e. g. information retrieval, programming, web searching, translation, database wrangling, maths, psychotherapy, customer support and so on and so on. On the other hand, I maintained that large language models are a really useful technology for use cases they were intended for, i. e. generating probable text sequences and working with natural language. Looking for a word that you can't quite describe but you know exists? A search engine often can't help you, but an LLM could. Rewriting a text in British English instead of American English? Worked fine. Generating soulless corporate emails to ask your boss for a deadline expansion? Why not. I still think that valid use cases for LLMs exist and that the tech is super fascinating by itself. So, what changed and why am I writing this? It started fcking pissing me off dude!! And I'm mad! Like, everywhere you go, everything's polluted by some AI-generated garbage now. Hobby communities where people used to show off their passion projects? Practically gone, everything's generated by some AI now. Icons, thumbnails, descriptions, perhaps the thing itself.Cool niche Linux programs? Everything's vibecoded or made to run AI for all kinds of nonsense. Seriously! Check out the top 5 #ArchLinux AUR packages [edit: for the keyword "terminal"]! They're ALL 'agents' and AI toolkits!Local festivals and events? Everything's an AI poster now! Gone are the days where the local school kids would design a shitty lil poster for their school summer festival. It's all creepy piss filter ChatGPT fake-Ghibli people now generated in 5 seconds by some adult. And everyone into the AI thing is incredibly insufferable, doesn't have any concept of consent, and seemingly relishes in creeping people out or upsetting them! Like, some of these "agents" seem specifically marketed at people who want to feel like they're super smart software engineers who own the libs by existing. Everything needs to come with a "hehe we're disrupting the market" wink. Where are the people genuinely excited about LLM technology? Why is everyone a grifter or a smug asshole on purpose? Seriously, I don't use and don't ever want to use LLMs for anything anymore, because it just feels so dirty. I'd rather have to find a synonym for a word myself once a month or so instead of using any of those weird-ass machines. Like seriously, every damn cool looking program I consider for my Linux installation has "Claude" as a main "contributor". Everywhere I look there are these shitty out of context rocket emoji. "Agents" files that baby talk about the repository structure pollute every Git repo now. Everyone's "building a tool" now, nobody's programming shit anymore. Minecraft modding sites are full of slop mods with marketing speak and terrible logos that don't even work. Everywhere you look everyone's sweet-talking marketing buzzwords at each other instead of talking like a normal human being. It's so hard to find passion projects now! Everything sucks! fuck! #linux #ai #antiAI #llms #llm #programming

@AeonCypher@lgbtqia.space I thing that calling people #AntiAI in the first place is already making a wrong statement, like calling people #Woke or #AntiFa, they are just people fighting as they can against the new #eldorado built upon theft, monopoly, immorality, gigantic water and electricity waste and direct climate change effects. Yes, it's a wonderful technology. Yes, it can help people do things. Being against the very idea of #AI only means that we don't want to be a part of it, it's a legit choice.

If there are externalities can I compensate for them? In my opinion, the #AntiAI crowd is actually doing the work for #Anthropic and I've wondered how much of the rhetoric is pushed by them. Anthropic's business model is to make everyone afraid of #LLM #technology in order to regulate their #monopoly. The biggest threat to humanity is that the technology is controlled by the top of the K-shaped economy. So, real AI education is fighting the megacorps. 19/

So often I see the Puritan Work Ethic sneaking into #AntiAI rhetoric. The idea is that human toil is inherently valuable. That #AI displacing human labor is bad. No. So far AI is only able to replace content mills and similar kinds of soul crushing work. This is so wildly misplaced. If AI were capable of writing a novel (which it isn't) then it should do that, and human storytellers would still be useful because the technology is inherently and mathematically mediocre. 10/

(sigh) If you were wondering like me if the #XFCE folks use LLM code generators or not.... well the dude working on their wayland compositor just removed all doubt; by posting their justification on using LLM code to their blog. I would recommend folks not pile on the guy in his comments section or anything. Just take note, and choose software or not according to your internal policy on such things. #FlOSS #AntiAI

"“More and more, I was getting questions about, ‘How do I turn this [AI] stuff off? Why is it trying to write my emails for me? Why is it trying to summarize my one-sentence email that I can easily read?’” Cyrus said. “I just decided that with so much media hype out there about AI products, it would be a good opportunity to teach people about the basics of what is happening when you’re using this technology, and then getting into how to turn it off if you don’t want to use it.” Usually, Cyrus’ classes like Intro to Computers get about a dozen attendees. But so many people expressed interest in her first Avoiding AI workshop that she had to cut off registration at 30 people, open a waitlist, and share the workshop on Zoom. Including the livestream, about 70 people attended each of Cyrus’ first two workshops. When Bailey followed Cyrus’ lead to host a workshop in Philadelphia, the reception was similarly unprecedented. The library’s Instagram post about the “Avoiding AI” event got over 2,000 likes and 220 shares, whereas most of the library’s posts don’t get more than a few dozen likes. He scheduled a second program because the first got too many registrations." https://techcrunch.com/2026/07/25/librarians-are-hosting-viral-avoiding-ai-workshops-for-people-who-are-fed-up-with-big-tech/ #AI #GenerativeAI #AntiAI #DigitalLiteracy #AILIteracy

Did anyone else notice that all the AI slop 'vibecoders' now use the phrase "I built"? Like, 90% of the time I see a sentence like "I built a plugin that lets you do XYZ" it turns out to be AI nonsense. I also can't remember any instances of seeing AI slop advertised with "I developed" or "I made". It's always 'building' now. #antiAI #programming

Codeberg community voted to ban AI-generated code in repositories: https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/pulls/1253#issuecomment-19820434 I am a regular Codeberg user, left GitHub in 2019, and co-maintain Libre projects that saw very little if none at all AI in development. And still I think this decision will backfire badly. I, like most of Codeberg users, was not even aware that this discussion was in place, did not vote. This only passed because of the anti-AI Luddite crowd. Which, mind you, has a point, I have very conflicting feelings about AI myself, and I think that the current trajectory is quite worrying. But this is just a knee-jerk reaction that has clearly not been thought of well enough. I applaude the philosophy, or the intent if you want, of not having Codeberg turn into another SlopHub. But this is fairy-tale wishful thinking. There is no way to reliably detect AI-generated code at scale in 2026. I can already smell the mutual witch hunts across projects and "camps". Anyway, I hope I'm wrong. #codeberg #ai #llm #drama #opensource #ludd #luddism #antiai #libre #foss #floss #slop #github

@tante@tldr.nettime.org sorry, the "how will people enforce this" argument is real, dismissing it will not make it disappear. #antillm #antiai
