Ooooh, a #Hue application on #Linux that syncs the sound to the lights! Aaaaand it's a #genAI piece of garbage that is half complete and "build" its own "libraries" It's getting so frustrating

RE: https://zirk.us/@grammargirl/116704173778333410 A few other reasons to avoid the term "hallucinate" in the context of LLMs: —It anthropomorphizes genAI, which is a harmful reflex. —It's a popular industry term for a reason. It perpetuates and strengthens the way genAI companies want us to perceive the technology. —Maybe most saliently: GenAI does nothing *but* hallucinate. Using the word to describe only some outputs implies erroneously that it's not hallucinating *all the time*. #AI #genAI #LLM #language #technology

I've never been opposed to the word "hallucinating" for describing how AI makes mistakes ... until now. I just talked to someone who thought AI hallucinations would be obvious because it would be obvious if you talked to a *person* who was hallucinating. In other words, they equated "hallucination" with "sounds wacko" and accepted AI output as true because it sounded level headed. 1/2

Today's Google Announcement that they are essentially killing search and making it just AI summaries so you don't need to go to the original sites may be a blessing in disguise. Present day content creators that really produce content will be strangled off. The new paradigm will be feeding the LLM bots. What will they be fed? They'll be fed more LLM generated content. It'll be a human centipede of content. Those of us who want that, which sadly is probably like >80% of the population, will go to their big tech LLM portals as their sole source of content. The producers that eschew that will continue to produce and hopefully connect with those of us that can't stand that fucking shit. How do we maximize access and discovery to these real producers and not slop farms? That's the question we should be asking. I don't think this will be the demise of Google or any of the big tech platforms. There is plenty of money to be made feeding junk food to the masses. I think we should think about how we generate sufficient discoverability to real creators and get sufficient revenue streams to them that they can keep doing it for a living, or at least a decent paying part time gig. #google #GenAI

One of the most stupid things ever to come out of the minds of literary scholars. It’s dumbfounding that anybody in a university job could have found the remotest scholarly value in that process… https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2026/may/11/moliere-ex-machina-ai-create-new-work-france-equivalent-shakespeare #genai #genai_slop #noai

All the posts being absolutist about "AI" (problematic term, obviously) such as any use of genai models being involved in an artifact being a sign or consequence of a loss of "humanity" push the same narrative as the hyperscalers saying that AI is humanity's panacea. It posits that "AI" is a technology that through mere contact with it redefines who you are as a human and your "value". Use it and you are "elevating your skills", or, inversely "suffering from brainrot" / "infects everything it touches". An LLM is a pile of numbers that model the language it has seen during its training. It doesn't have to redefine anything. You can't put a clear cut between the use of LLMs and the use of a search engine/IDE/youtube tutorials (or whatever used to be the favourite target of the "brainrot" accusation) , the environmental costs of a genai oriented datacenter and a "normal" datacenter. There is nothing transcendental about #llms. They are complex computational artifacts, which makes them hard to understand and not easy to wield. You can't' accuse someone of brainrot and then proclaim boldly that an entire field of research is "brainrot garbage". That is intellectually dishonest. I harp on this so often because it is just playing _STRAIGHT_ into the things that people decry, and while a huge of percentage of people out there are doing fuckshit with the technology, it's by virtue of being so absolutist, cutting off any meaningful practical way of countering the narrative. I can't counter openai by refusing to use it. I can however show people how to do proper engineering with LLMs, how to use small models, how to use less tokens, how to identify what is worth using and what is not. If I can help a person burning $200 tokens a day reduce that to $100 / month, I've done a fair deal. If I can help an org migrate their data off google by building a little bespoke backend, I've moved an org off google. But that requires properly engaging with the tech, recognizing that "prompt engineering" is a thing, and not an easy one. #llms #llm #genai

My university system (SUNY) has mandated that all gen ed courses with quantitative or information literacy components include a bunch of stuff about #AI. The good news is that we are not mandated to cheerlead AI or teach people how to use it, but the latter is almost mandated by the language of what we have to address. We also have to have specific assignments about AI. My assignments will not leave students with a false sense that AI is benign or ethically OK. I expect some pushback, but this is one of the things I'm willing to get ugly about. Plenty of faculty have jumped on board the university/system administration's many other messages about teaching "ethical use" of #AI, integrating it into all classes to teach students how to use it "effectively" and "non-harmfully," etc. You can probably guess, from my tone, what I think of this and how many swear words my thoughts might contain. I'm not required to incorporate content about about other technologies like cryptocurrency, NFTs, crowdsourced knowledge bases, goFundMe, or (heaven forbid) open-source software. Nope, just AI. This feels like the corporate managers of #US #highered being as corporate as their sad little suit-wearing, jargon-spewing selves can possibly be. I really hope we come out of this someday understanding just how anti-labor, anti-environment, anti-peace, anti-freedom, and basically anti-human this top-down push for #genAI is. Fuck everything about this. #professor #fuckthis

@kagihq@mastodon.social I haven't cancelled, but I've got to admit that I came close when I realized that you were sending every search ending in a question mark straight to Google. Now I just avoid using your AI features as the main reason I started subscribing was to get decent search without being surveilled by the likes of Google. I'll admit though, that the first competitor to come along providing even a vaguely similar service without Google / Yandex involved will immediately take my current Kagi subscription. So much of what you do is so promising, and then you undermine it by sharing data with the exact companies we're trying to get away from. Yes it may be more anonymous, but I'm still training Google against my wishes. #Kagi #Google #Alphabet #AI #GenAI #Privacy #Surveillance

So, more #genAI pain. By and large, the bubble's a bubble because the number of people out there in the business community who like it enough to be willing to pay for zillions of tokens, in aggregate trillions of dollars, is pretty small despite frantic pushing, and thus eventually it all pops. There is an exception…

The software-dev community is many orders of magnitude too small to keep the bubble inflated. And in fact #genAI works way better on code than on actual human language. Because the vocabulary is so much smaller and “doing the same as everyone else already has” is actually a good engineering practice. So…

So those of you who are burning millions of tokens on Claude Code should probably be aware that you’re one of the few remaining forces inflating the bubble. Whatever, it’ll pop anyhow, the #genAI space will become a tiny, mostly open-source, fraction of what it is today, and at that point. we devs can use it without feeling guilty.

Most text-to-speech tools fall into two camps. The ones that sound good need serious hardware. The ones that run on anything sound robotic. MOSS-TTS-Nano is trying to be neither. It’s a 100M parameter model that runs on a regular CPU and it actually sounds good. Good enough that the team behind it built an entire family of speech models around the same core technology, one of which has gone head to head with Gemini 2.5 Pro and ElevenLabs https://firethering.com/moss-tts-nano-open-source-tts/ #technews #ai #tts #llm #genai

LLMs can get "brain rot"! An experiment was done where LLMs were trained on "brain rot" data, and it degraded their reasoning abilities. Subsequent training on high-quality data didn't entirely reverse the brain rot. https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.13928 #solidstatelife #ai #genai #llms #brainrot
