@alineblankertz It could have been so much different. We could have built something by the same name through collective, voluntary contribution and bottom-up organization, instead of extractive top-down processes. Something that wasn't ethically compromised from its very inception and warped by wealth inequality and power dynamics.
I do think it has its uses, one of them being accessibility for the blind community, which is something I've heard directly from quite a few of them. As I see it, we might as well make the best of an awful situation. But one day, I hope we can tear down capitalism and replace it with cooperatives and do away with this twisting of everything and everyone into subservience of a handful of sociopaths and narcissists who care nothing for the rest of humanity.

I think the core problem here is that the laws need to catch up to the reality -- and be enforced, too. Someday we will live in a world where we each have irrevocable ownership of our own data, and can choose to donate it all or in part to those causes we deem just. I have no idea how long it will take us to get there, though. Probably not our lifetimes, from the look of it.

This is not to say that it's right for that to be the case, or that it's the individual's responsibility to curb bad behavior from these corporations. We need laws for that. But if people are going to take it upon themselves to disrupt this behavior, picking on alt text in particular is severely misguided.

I still think that's working against the public good. If the models being trained on this data are used for accessibility by the blind community, and we are intentionally working to lower their accuracy, we are hurting the blind community. We should fight the AI vendors on a front where there aren't innocent bystanders who will be hit.

But for anyone who actually listens to the blind community, it doesn't take long to learn that these models are pretty important to a lot of people for accessibility. And regardless, alt text is directly helpful. I'm happy to put my displeasure with big tech on hold for things that genuinely improve people's lives.

Was it the US taking unilateral action? Or was it one man, Trump? They didn't fund a revolution because publicity is the point for him. He wants to deflect from Epstein, and simultaneously make himself feel powerful and special. That's why he defied our congress and law and went straight to executing another "big man" (his implied perspective, not mine).
Part of me wonders if maybe it isn't better this way. Maybe world leaders should all just start assassinating each other instead of dragging the rest of us into wars and getting all of us killed. I can think of quite a few I wouldn't miss. If it catches on, it might even force a reorganization of governments around the world into *not* centralizing power into the hands of one or a handful of people, which would be absolutely great for most of us. This is idle speculation and wishful thinking, of course. The real world never works so nicely.

I'm stuck going without my diabetes medication. My doctor isn't completely certain it's working well enough, without me paying for blood tests. So of course, the solution isn't to maintain the status quo until I can afford the damn blood test. It's to refuse to refill my prescription *at all*, ruining the usefulness of any subsequent blood test and forcing me to feel like complete shit and face unnecessary health risks. And they think it's acceptable, somehow, to fob me off on a free clinic that doesn't even exist. Meanwhile, icy weather sets in so even the free clinic that I eventually did find on my own can't see me for another week.
Why do doctors think it's appropriate to act like money grubbing gatekeepers for my health instead of healthcare providers? This is not acceptable, *at all*.

@benfulton @noondlyt We should get rid of publicly traded corporations altogether. There's nothing a corporation can do that a cooperative can't. But there's plenty a corporation *will* do that a cooperative *won't* -- like worker and customer exploitation or externalization of costs onto the community & environment -- for the simple reason that cooperatives are fundamentally democratic by nature. Run for the people, by the people. As as a side bonus, they redistribute wealth instead of concentrating it and creating billionaires.

2. RFK Jr has publicly spoken about "reparenting" us to "farms" where we would be forced to work without any contact with the outside world, supposedly for our mental health. You can call them farms, or you can call them labor camps. Makes no difference.

@codebyjeff @broadwaybabyto Read about his comments regarding mental health and how being "reparented" and forced to work on a farm with no meds or contact with the outside world is his planned treatment, and then get back to us. Sounds an awful lot like a labor camp, doesn't it? Oh, and by the way, autism counts as poor mental health in his book, as does being a young black man. No, I am not making this up.

@markhurst @randomwalker @sayashk Every automated job acts as an amplifier for the rate of wealth concentration in our economy. It's not even necessary to automate all jobs.
With each wave of automation, there is temporary technological unemployment. Waves of automation are coming faster with each cycle. Eventually those waves will come fast enough that the job market cannot adjust fast enough, and technological unemployment will build faster than it can be eliminated. So unemployment will continue to rise until it reaches an untenable level, even if you are of the school of thought that new jobs can always be created to replace old ones.
And once there aren't enough jobs to go around, people will be cut out of the money flow and left to go hungry/homeless. Even if it's not a majority of people who suffer this fate, it's still going to be too many.
