I want something inclusive where we don't need to just bow to the indigenous nations known to Americans whose cultural power reigns supreme. I want a place for someone from East Africa, from Malaysia, from Canada and from Estonia can dream up their own futures. Each of them will be different and will address different needs. There's a lot more world outside of the West :)

@foundseed@spore.social what I'm getting at is that I feel that you're trying to Afrofuturist Slavs, or even better: Wakandize us :P It's projecting the US national exceptionalism and specificity (even with good things, like the respect for indigenous people) onto a setting where it just doesn't fit. "A green imperialism" as an Egyptian friend called it seeing the process in action. Similar to the discussion on solar farms nearby: each region needs its own solutions and a space to develop them.

@foundseed@spore.social when working with a lot of Western writers and publishers I see them heavily preferring Afrofuturism and proud fairy tales over African Futurism showing actual problems and hopes of multiple regions. Hell, a lot of Publishers refuse to publish anything but poverty porn from Africa, even within their "utopian anthologies", completely ignoring all the support networks and traditions people have there.

Did you know that people in East Africa played "Spot Your Culture" when watching Black Panther's Wakanda, as the movie was a (warm, but still a) parody of cultures from all over the continent. It was done respectfully >as Americans define it<, not as people on the ground can see representation. Wakanda is an Atlantis that the Afrofuturism wants to be descended from, but it has little to do with Ghana or Kenya of today.

@foundseed@spore.social Afrofuturism is created by American descendants of Africans shipped to the Americas. It's a response to their need of identity and their own future, but it at best romanticizes what futures are dreamt of in actual Africa, where people don't get a voice to claim them. African Futurism are voices from a myriad cultures of modern Africa, rooted in their own contexts, histories, values and mythologies, distinct from each other and the American homogenization.

@foundseed@spore.social so if I am to take concepts from other cultures without adjusting it to fit my own culture, how exactly is this different from colonialism? Why instead of developing my own cultural tools to fit concepts should I import them wholesale from cultures which have totally different values? I'm not saying we cannot learn from each other, but my initial stance stands: I need a new language to develop the culture I have, not to accept Kurd or Inuit one.

@foundseed@spore.social you mean górale, the most patriarchal cultural group in Poland who refused to accept the anti-domestic violence law saying it destroys their culture? I did study some of their history, how they opposed a lot of oppressive states, but I don't think they share as much of the liberatory spirit as the Ukrainian Cossacks did. I'm afraid that there is just no indigenous group in our region who can teach us sustainability, especially given that we lack a word for it.

@foundseed@spore.social I live in Poland. We do not have a tradition of sustainable land stewardship. We don't have indigenous people who would teach us how to coexist with ecosystems. We don't even have a concept of sustainability in Polish. Its only balance or balanced growth. We need a new language to imagine doing that, in our way.

@amici@fribygda.no That is actually an interesting question. @foundseed@spore.social describes Solarpunk as if it _should_ be a political movement. I don't consider it one, but it's also not not one. In the very manifestos it says that art is activism. Its art needs to be political, even just to properly express its values. All I personally want is a language to talk about communities, infrastructure, open source and disaster preparedness. I don't know if it's doable without being political.

What I intended to say is that the part of the movement I value is a part which might not be visible to people who just googled it and saw "Dear Alice". Maybe the Story Seed Library will change that recognition?

No matter whether they were hurt by a hurricane or an enemy army which decided to shoot civilians. I think there is rage, there is anger, there is hope, there is grief - and there is a lot of determination to help. That's the emotion that I want in what I call #solarpunk

@foundseed@spore.social I wrote about it in my own essay: the rage expressed in militancy is too easy to control by whichever big system people rage against. They became safe, predictable rebels. I want to tell stories of re-forging this white-hot rage into determination to build an alternative. Instead of throwing molotovs, imagine creating systems which help people even if the state or infrastructure fails.

In some places, for some topics, we need a new language. Going deeper, I think it would be good to differentiate between "afrofuturism" (visions created by black Americans) and "african futurism" which more closely aligns with visions and tradition of people who live in Africa. The differences between the two can be quite stark.

Moving quietly and planting things. Building parallel infrastructures that rage wouldn't be able to build. There is value in slow, long-term work.

I've been waiting for this essay from @foundseed@spore.social - a criticism of #solarpunk as understood from the American / Internet / Punk perspective.

I'm personally not that attached to the label or the "mainstream" parts of the movement.

My own goal is to find a language, a narrative and a set of symbols/hieroglyphs to tell the stories necessary for our survival. Stories happening right now.

That's why I started the #storySeedLibrary .

Maybe Solarpunk isn't_the thing, but I can't see any better one.

I am incredibly impressed with the #gameDesign of the #TTRPG #realis , currently being crowdfunded - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/crum/realis

It's a diceless game where characters are built with Sentences which become more powerful as they get more specific. The character growth is substractive, not additive. It tell stories of maturing and growing old, too specialized.
