The Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion has asked the national charities regulator to consider barring hate preachers, people who spread bigotry and serious criminals from running registered charities — and the response has put religious privilege in the frame. ACNC chief Susan Woodward says the same standards should apply to all charities: religious charities currently enjoy extra exemptions, and the ACNC is wholly barred from removing the 'responsible person' of a religious charity, even for breaching the Racial Discrimination Act. She wants that power broadened. The sector's peak body, the Community Council for Australia, backs standardising the rules but warns against blanket bans on people with past convictions. Good news story: Fremantle's new traffic bridge is coming back before Christmas, on budget at $596 million, and ahead of its original 2027 timeline. But the real headline is what happened during the closure: Fremantle Station boardings jumped 20%, parking up 30%, and overall river crossings fell by a fifth. People changed behaviour. They used public transport. It proves transit works when it's given a chance. Now imagine what we could achieve if that same focus and funding were directed to the outer suburbs and growth corridors that have waited decades for decent rail or bus services. On time and on budget is possible. It just needs to be the priority. #wapol #auspol

Victorian electoral law treats volunteer hours as if they don’t exist. A company can second 20 staff to a campaign for weeks and declare zero. Fusion’s policy: count every hour, value them at twice minimum wage ($50/hr), and trigger matching public funding up to 3:1 via our Democratic Campaign Equalisation Trust. Kmart's $89 Anko Smart Glasses sold out in under a week. They can record HD video and snap photos without the subject knowing. The Privacy Commissioner says Australia's Privacy Act doesn't cover individuals filming with them, only businesses and agencies. Attorney-General Michelle Rowland has asked the OAIC to investigate, citing risks to women and children. 85% of Australians are more concerned about privacy since 2021. This isn't a fringe dystopia. Then let the precincts above them be captured by private developers, who take the long-term revenue while the public carries the infrastructure debt. We will mandate public housing and public income retention on all major station precincts. VicTrack sells development rights for a one-off payment. We change that: the Victorian Wealth & Housing Fund (VWHF) builds at cost on state-owned land, retains the asset, and collects the rent indefinitely. No more sell-offs. No more missed revenue. Before, Mount Gambier had two full-time stoma nurses supporting 200+ patients across the South East. Now? One nurse, one day a week. Patients in their 80s are driving 450km to Adelaide when things go wrong. David Platt had to teach a brand-new nurse how to change a bag because her training never covered it. The local health network says they're recruiting. But the course costs $14k and takes a year. Meanwhile, the position sits empty and patients pay the price. This isn't a unique story - it's what happens when regional health is treated as an afterthought. Staff leave, positions go unfilled, and the community is expected to 'be patient.' Sydney Airport: nearly 100 flights delayed or cancelled because Airservices Australia doesn't have enough air traffic controllers. Qantas had 50 delays and 4 cancellations. Jetstar 20, Virgin 25. Some passengers waited on tarmacs for two hours. The public agency is understaffed – and travellers pay the price. Smart glasses are going mainstream and our privacy laws haven't caught up. The privacy act barely covers individuals wearing them, surveillance rules are a messy state by state patchwork, and Meta is reportedly building "super sensor" glasses that can record even when you're not actively using them.
