"AI" is a normal technology. It's an algorithm that does a handful of things quite well and a dumptruck of things very poorly.
The "AI" industry is vile. Its goal is to convince your boss to "fire you and replace you with a chatbot that can't do your job" (@pluralistic@mamot.fr), and it will happily destroy the economy and egg on environmental destruction to do it.

There is something almost offensively inconvenient about Horkheimer’s sentence.
It refuses the comforting story.
Fascism is not a monster that crawls out of the forest while respectable society watches helplessly from the window.
It does not require civilisation to suddenly disappear.
It can emerge from within existing institutions, existing hierarchies, existing economic relations.
That is the point.
When capital concentrates, inequality deepens and economic crises become structural rather than exceptional, the question becomes increasingly unpleasant: what happens when democracy starts getting in the way of concentrated power?
One possible answer is reform.
Another is repression.
And fascism is, among other things, a particularly vicious political answer to that contradiction.
It preserves hierarchy by redirecting popular anger away from the structures producing insecurity and towards convenient human targets.
The unemployed become lazy. The migrant becomes dangerous. The queer person becomes corrupting. The dissident becomes subversive.
The system remains innocent.
The victim becomes the problem.
And this is why I find the contemporary habit of treating fascism as something belonging exclusively to history so profoundly dangerous.
Fascism rarely introduces itself as:
Hello. I am fascism.
It tends to arrive as an administrative measure.
A moral panic.
A security policy.
A campaign against “degeneracy.”
A little restriction here.
A little dehumanisation there.
A political movement discovers that cruelty polls well, and suddenly cruelty acquires a press office.
Horkheimer was not offering a prophecy.
He was offering a warning about structure.
And structures do not care whether we find them aesthetically unpleasant.
They simply keep producing consequences.

There might be a long game to #AI, #FOSS, and #personalcomputing .
Basically, #capitalism hates how FOSS has "leaked value", and how [home] PCs and local #compute has enabled value streams outside of corporate control.
The#cloud drive was the initial attempt to force the value back under oligopole control, on the hardware side, #socialmedia platforms were the "sugar" software. But even these two in combination failed to completely eradicate free open source and alternatives, as this fine #mastodon platform on the #fediverse proves.
Enter #AI, the perfect weapon. It offers #techbros both tools: A way to dangle the promise of not even needing people anymore to investors, together with a perfect excuse to kill off the foundation that allows people to grow #cyber skills independently of corporate control - the [home] PC - by driving prices for basic tech like storage and memory way past home budgets.
By making a personal computer impossibly expensive to build or own, the base for FOSS erodes quickly. If all available compute is only by cloud supplied services, then any and all development will be beholden to the platform owner.
If you look at it this way, AI makes good sense, but it's only the last nail in a coffin that's been building for a while; the death of personal computing, and the death of an important freedom.

That is the definition, at least according to Google.
In short, for over 200 years, it has been a derogatory term to label someone as irrationally afraid of technology or progress.
But where did this term come from? What is a Luddite?
And what if we told you that this was a classic case of the victors writing the history? And what if we told you that you, (yes, you) in the age of AI, probably have more in common with those original machine-breakers than you think?
In this video, we explore the history of this group of rebels and their fight for dignity, self-determination, and freedom. CISA released an urgent message warning water utilities to disconnect their logic controllers from the internet in the face of rising cyberattacks.
The hacks target internet-facing programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that control equipment and allow machinery to communicate. They monitor and control the water pressure, chemical dosing, and other factors to ensure the water is safe.
Many of the PLCs are apparently open to the internet and use default credentials, allowing a remote attacker to easily take them over.
