We are seeing a near-record early melt-out of sea ice in the Barents Sea region of the #Arctic this summer. This is at least partially in response to the anomalous warmth there the last several months. Map of the general location: https://zacklabe.com/arctic-climate-seasonality-and-variability/

Trends in June sea ice concentration are still mostly confined to coastal areas of the #Arctic Ocean. The largest declines are found in the Barents Sea this time of year. Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover (observed by satellite). Info: https://doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-25-0104.1

The shocking hypothesis was revived by the U.S. Special Envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry, who, after his first visit to the island following his appointment in December 2025, stated that for Washington it was time to “reassert its influence” on the Arctic island. “I believe it’s time for the United States to re-open the door to Greenland,” the U.S. envoy told Agence France-Presse, adding that the Arctic island “needs the United States.” Trump puts Greenland back in the spotlight. In an interview published by the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq, Landry also revived the island’s independence aspirations, dampened by Trump’s statements about a possible annexation. “I believe there are incredible opportunities that could really lead the Greenlanders from dependence to independence,” he stated, adding that he believed that “the President of the United States would like to see the country become economically independent. Hantavirus: the outbreak ship is in Tenerife; protected passenger transfer is being initiated. The cruise ship Hondius, where a hantavirus outbreak occurred, arrived around 7 a.m. this morning at the port of Granadilla, in southern Tenerife, the Spanish island. More than 100 passengers and part of the crew will be disembarked and transferred to healthcare facilities. The rest of the crew will instead continue the voyage to the Netherlands. Tenerife authorities prevented the ship from docking at the port, although tents were set up on the dock for reception. It will remain in port until passengers and seafarers are disembarked, between today and tomorrow. Special flights will await to take them home. There are passengers and crew from 23 different countries on board. As health protocol operations begin, the organized trip from the Arctic to Antarctica by the Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions ends. A luxury cruise – cabin prices between €16,000 and €25,000 – for birdwatching and nature enthusiasts, with three deaths, two of which occurred on board, at least five other passengers infected and various possible infections with the previously little-known virus outside Argentina. #Tenerife #Hondius #Granadilla #Spanish #Netherlands #Arctic #Antarctica #Dutch #Argentina https://www.iltempo.it/esteri/2026/05/10/news/hantavirus-nave-da-crociera-focolaio-tenerife-trasferimento-protetto-passeggeri-47654830/

New York and the enchantment of the frozen lake. AGI - Forty days frozen, a phenomenon that hadn't occurred in New York for decades: it’s the evocative setting of Reservoir, the popular inland lake in Central Park, which, since the first Arctic wave in January, continues to show a polar scene, never before seen. Thousands, every day, New Yorkers are going to see the frozen lake. Local media are doing reports and inviting visitors to see the Reservoir before the ice layer breaks. Despite the temperatures rising, it doesn't seem determined to yield. #NewYork #Reservoir #CentralPark #first #Arctic #NewYorkers https://www.agi.it/estero/video/2026-03-02/lago-ghiacciato-central-park-35903808/

Russia's doctrine in action. Moscow has long defined the Arctic as a vital strategic zone. Any NATO military buildup on Greenland is automatically framed as a direct threat to Russian national security and northern fleet bastions.😀 #Russia #Greenland #Arctic #BreakingNews
