Sea surface temperatures are way above average in parts of the #Arctic as of last month, particularly in the Kara Sea Basin extending to around Svalbard and the Greenland Sea. This is also found in the Hudson Bay due to their very early sea ice melt-out. Data from NOAA OISSTv2.1.

Very warm July (relative to normal) in western Siberia and much of central and eastern Canadian Arctic. Cooler than normal for most of Alaska, northwest Canada, the Russian far northeast and the Nordic Arctic. For the Arctic overall (land and seas north of 60ºN), third warmest July since 1950 in ERA5 reanalysis. @Climatologist49@fediscience.org #Arctic #Climate #Summer2026

“Studies in recent years have shown that the Arctic is warming much more rapidly than the rest of the planet due to feedback from the loss of sea ice —so it is not surprising that we are seeing these all-time record temperatures at high latitudes,” says independent meteorologist Alan Gerard. It’s a dangerous feedback loop: as sea ice melts, the Arctic reflects less sunlight, and the ocean absorbs more heat. This generates even more sea ice loss. The region is warming as much as four times faster than the rest of the world. Rising temperatures are unlikely to let up anytime soon, Gerard says, thanks to a strong El Niño expected this year. There is little to no temperature trend over the Central #Arctic in summer due to basic heat flux exchanges from melting ice. However, adjacent areas show long-term warming in July. Data from ERA5 reanalysis. More info: https://doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-25-0104.1
