My 25 years of palaeoart chronology... In 2019 I built a life-size Protoichthyosaurus for Lapworth Museum (University of Birmingham). It was partly built in my workshop and partly open to public view in the museum. Here's the built Part 3. #Art #Painting #PaleoArt #PalaeoArt #SciArt #SciComm #DigitalArt #Illustration #Dinosaurs #Birds #Reptiles #Palaeontology #Paleontology #Ichthyosaur

My 25 years of palaeoart chronology... In 2020 I illustrated LOCKED IN TIME, written by Dr Dean Lomax. Here's my "Portrait of malignance" painting, depicting a Telmatosaurus with an ameloblastoma on its lower jaw. https://cup.columbia.edu/book/locked-in-time/9780231197281 #Art #Painting #PaleoArt #PalaeoArt #SciArt #SciComm #DigitalArt #Illustration #Dinosaurs #Birds #Reptiles #Palaeontology #Paleontology

It is exciting to see snippets of Surviving Earth coming out from Impossible Pictures (see: https://www.instagram.com/picturesimpossible/) One of the clips released features Arctodus, the "short faced bear", here is my official design sheet, which was used by the production team. #Art #Painting #PaleoArt #PalaeoArt #SciArt #SciComm #DigitalArt #Illustration #Palaeontology #Paleontology #SurvivingEarth #ImpossiblePictures #Arctodus #ShortFacedBear #TheDinosaurs #Dinosaurs

If you're doing science communication, you should be doing it accessibly as possible. If you think science matters to people and that's why you communicate it - disabled people are a subset of the set people. If you don't know how to create accessible communications, and are unsure of the information you're finding online, there are plenty of disabled people here on Mastodon. Ask. Images, video, audio, palette...these have accessibility aspects to learn. #SciComm #Science #Accessibility

I recently gave a NerdNite talk about the weird and wonderful ways soil animals survive the challenges of life, and their complex (and sometimes quite romantic) love lives. I had an absolute blast, and the recording is now up on YouTube! Warning: this was an evening talk in a pub setting, so it has some adult humour and might not be for everyone. But, if you can stomach talk about slugs chewing off their own penises, and mites constructing 'love gardens' out of their own semen, then this talk is for you! Today marks 107 years since the birth of #JamesLovelock and 4 years since he passed away. He is best remembered for the #Gaia hypothesis, which you can read more about in my four-part review, starting with https://inquisitivebiologist.com/2023/07/26/book-review-gaia-a-new-look-at-life-on-earth/ #Books #BookReview #Bookstodon #Scicomm #Ecology #EarthSystemSciences

Hello! I’m on the lookout for #freelance #writing opportunities for @sci_burst@mastodon.social 💜 We currently do a bit of work in this space with Curious Minds - Girls in STEM, Refraction Media’s Careers with STEM #magazine, and a few other places. Keen to broaden our reach and write more on science in #PopCulture, sustainable futures and #solarpunk, and #ScienceCommunication. Please let me know if you’re aware of any aligned opportunities, big or small! 🫶🫶 💌 hello@sci-burst.com.au 💌 #scicomm

A bunch of those generic viral "good news" sites are sharing this February 2025 Signal Hill story about a ten-year-old boy in Japan collaborating with one of the American entomologists who showed butterflies remember what they learn as caterpillars (https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0001736) to prove, amazingly, that butterflies pass on these learned memories to their offspring. However they all say less than the original story, and you really have to listen to it/read the transcript! I have the mp3 saved on my phone to relisten to because it legit makes me tear up a little. It's wonderfully told. Original story: https://www.signalhill.fm/issue-one/#caterpillar-roadshow MP3 direct link: https://storage.ghost.io/c/16/19/1619a79c-38d2-4e0c-8276-10c5572e1e6a/content/media/2025/02/CaterpillarRoadshow.mp3 #bugstodon #SciComm #entomology #butterflies #Lepidoptera
