A slight detour for me today. One of the problems with living in Scotland is that the sky doesn't get fully dark during the summer. Last night was our first "proper" dark since May, so the telescope came out to play. I concentrated on one area for about 45 minutes, knowing the Milky Way was in that part of the sky but not expecting to get very much from it. Oh boy, was I wrong! The night shift begins. At our Paranal Observatory, sunset does not mark the end of the day: it signals the beginning of a night under the stars. Taken after dinner, before heading to the telescopes for a night of observing, this image shows the last rays of sunlight slicing through one of the corridors at the Residencia — a home away from home for astronomers and other staff members. https://www.eso.org/public/images/potw2632a/ 📷 L. Unusual asteroid unmasked! 🪨 Using our VLT in Chile & the Large Binocular Telescope in the US, astronomers have resolved the shape of (44) Nysa, a peculiar asteroid between Mars and Jupiter. They revealed a structure unlike anything observed before! 📹 ESO/K. Minker et al. 1/2 #astrodon #astronomy #astrophysics #space #science

Total solar #eclipse loading ☀️🌕🌍 On 12 August, the #Moon will slip between the #Earth and the #Sun, turning day into night for up to a minute and a half along the path of totality. Two excellent slides from Piero Benvenuti from IAU CPS (https://cps.iau.org/ International astronomical union center for the protection of dark and quiet sky) at #COSPAR2026 in the "Dark and Quiet Sky" session discussing megaconstellations. (Also emphasising that this is a transition to that happens broader and that the threat to the sky is just one example of.) #astrodon

You'd think one would be over it at some point of one's career. But here I am, having submitted a report last week and the editor writes back saying "thanks for a detailed and thoughtful report. exemplary actually. i find it very useful." -- and I am PREENING myself on this. Seriously, folks, never forget how happy a few words of real praise (there were some more details in there that show that the editor truly engaged) can make someone. #Academia #astrodon

Welcome to a Comet, from Lander on Surface The Philae lander of the European Space Agency Rosetta mission is safely on the surface of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, as these first two images from the lander CIVA camera confirm. One of the lander three feet can be seen in the foreground. They did not find conclusive proof, but the real Science was the things they discovered along the way, the False Positives were interesting freaks in their own right. https://www.sciencealert.com/jwst-just-examined-two-stars-suspected-of-harboring-dyson-spheres-heres-what-it-found #SETI #Science #Astrodon #Space #DysonSpheres #JWST

The conclusion of a century-long quest 😲 Our VLT obtained firm evidence that Betelgeuse, a red supergiant star in the Orion constellation and one of the most famous stars in the night sky, is not alone! 1/4 📷 ESO/M. Hi — I'm Joe, a software engineer in Philadelphia teaching myself radio astronomy. I'm building open-source Python tools as I learn: a course, a framework for reproducible research on public archives, and control software for a Discovery Dish station I'm still assembling. No first light yet. Mostly here to learn from people who actually do this. Expect hydrogen line observing, public archives, and honest null results. #introduction #RadioAstronomy #Astronomy #Astrodon #Python #OpenSource

Something is going on with the big old Supermassive Black Hole that holds this galaxy together as it's kicking out antimatter and spraying our satellite galaxies with it. It's almost certainly something natural, and probably something a lot of other galaxies do, but it's still an exciting mystery. Why only 100 years ago we had just figured out what a Galaxy was, should Civilisation persist I wonder what wonders we'll uncover in 100 years hence? https://www.sciencealert.com/strange-gamma-rays-beyond-the-milky-way-may-reveal-antimatter-annihilation #Astrodon #Space

TFW you get to use a 1950s survey scope to pin azimuth for true north on an incoming Sundial. A bit of fun, this Wild Heerbrug T3 (yes, that's its name) #canada government scope was donated to #yorkuniversity in 1980s, when the original York Sundial still existed. Now we're getting a BIG Sundial and using a bit of the 50s from the 80s to align azimuth. The location is awesomely aligned with @AllanICarswellObservatory for likely obvious reasons 😀 #astronomy #Astrodon #science #sundialsunday

😭💔 I've known Ralph since I was visiting master student in Amsterdam in 2008... Never directly worked with him but had a ton of great conversations about all kinds of things related to work and international living... https://www.astronomie.nl/nieuws/in-memoriam-ralph-wijers-astrofysicus-1964-2026-4834 #astrodon

My first ever Astronomy gig let me hang around David Malin, one of the premier AstroPhotographers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Malin When I worked on my PhD I didn't need to pour over optical plates (the Digitized Sky Survey and COSMOS meant I could do it from a computer) but some of my friends still had to. I came out of work last night to see we were advertising the Harvard Plate Stacks https://platestacks.cfa.harvard.edu/ and it reminded me of those times and my first office (sat above them). #Astronomy #Astrodon

Saturn and 4 Icy Moons in Natural Color This approximate natural-color image shows Saturn, its rings, and four of its icy satellites. Three satellites (Tethys, Dione, and Rhea) are visible against the darkness of space, and another smaller satellite (Mimas) is visible against Saturn's cloud tops very near the left horizon and just below the rings. The dark shadows o... More: https://images.nasa.gov/details/PIA00400 Credit: NASA/JPL/USGS #dione #voyager #astrodon #astronomy #astrophotography #astrophysics

That's no moon. It's a...hang on, what should we call it? 🤔 Our VLT has revealed evidence for a moon-like object in the CD-35 2722 system. Yet this new ‘exomoon’ detection is challenging cosmic labels! Illustration: ESO/M. Kornmesser #astrodon #astronomy #astrophysics #space #science 1/4
