At this point, I was involved, directly or indirectly, in the mentorship of students and postdocs from 12 countries (🇳🇱🇮🇹🇩🇪🇬🇷🇮🇱🇮🇷🇷🇺🇨🇳🇮🇳🇰🇪🇳🇬🇺🇸). I was looking at a new paper that came out. It had a map in the discussion showing some things. I'm looking at it, and I can spot some glaring omissions in the Indian Ocean. The thing is, I know for sure one of the authors should know about them - we co-authored several papers on them. #AcademicChatter

Just me looking into a UofA masters degree in optics. While I'm working full time. Because I get jittery when I've been out of classes for more than 3 years. I mean, it would only be 7 years of taking classes after work, and work would pay for it all. No biggie. Guys, I might have a problem. #academicchatter

I think that people don't have a full appritiation on the fact that many scientists can't publish wherever they want. I had a minute to read through the proposed changes to the National Competitive Grants Program (https://www.arc.gov.au/system/files/2026-07/ncgp-policy-review_finalreport-20262207_0.pdf) I think there are some positive things here. I like the emphasis on ECR support, and the splitting of the main ECR grant into early-ECR and late-ECR. This should make up for DECRA shortcomings, where most grants were awarded in the last year of eligibility. I also like the increased focus on Indigenous scholars, with a dedicated funding pathway for both ECR and MCRs. These are hugely positive. I do think there are a few mis-steps though, particularly around salary funding for anyone non-ECR (no more Future Fellowship equivalent). This is going to disadvantage anyone who hasn't got a secure position, no more salary funding to entice a uni to give you a job! It also seems like quite a risk-averse strategy. The 'Explore' program is the blue-sky program, and is expected to make up just 5% of funding, while 'Breakthrough' projects, which are 'excellent research that addresses a significant gap' (what research doesn't hope to do this?) will comprise 40% of projects. The elephant in the room of the (relatively) tiny ARC budget was not addressed, and the report goes to lengths to hide this. Nowhere is the annual grant budget plotted over time in real terms. I guess because this would demonstrate too clearly that funding has declined... Anyway, these are just my quick thoughts. Interested to hear what other people think. #AusPol #AcademicChatter

Q: There are a number of sites that purport to list upcoming scientific conferences, but I assume most are in it for profit of one sort or another and are of varying mid - low quality. Can any scientists (esp in #Botany, #Ecology, #PlantScience, #Biology) recommend a site they use to keep abreast of upcoming conferences, seminars, and workshops they might otherwise miss notice of? #AskFed #Science #AcademicChatter

I did wonder why I wasn't inundated with invitations to review papers recently. Then I popped into the email account from my prior institute and found a pile of review invitations I wasn't aware off becouse I don't check that email. Editors - make sure to check where people are currently employed before sending review requests! #AcademicChatter

No one likes dealing with reviews and rewrite comments, but the tone of the reviewer does have a big impact on how we process that review. There are a lot of FEELINGS involved. #Writing #AcademicChatter #Reviews

I really don't get professors (esp. older ones) who push students straight to GenAI models for data analysis, saying, "Yes, it makes mistakes, but you can quality-control the output." And how would a student who doesn't have the foundations is supposed to do that? Those skills are learned. #AcademicChatter

Hello Mathstodon! #Introduction I'm Christian, a maths grad who got tired of not being able to ctrl+F for maths in a PDF. I built a browser extension that fixes it. LaTeX PDF Search lets you search papers by LaTeX expression: type (\int_0^\infty e^{-x^2},dx) and it highlights every occurrence. Works on arXiv out of the box.
