Question for people in tech industry doing software engineering or adjacent (anywhere in the world TBH, I’m in the USA for reference)

What would you value more? What do you think a hiring manager at your company would value more?

I currently have a Bachelors (4 year) Degree in Liberal Arts and have been writing code in my free time for just shy of two decades, mainly focusing on desktop applications in languages like Java, C#, Rust, Python, and experienced with many web stack languages and such.
I am considering getting a Software “Engineering” Associates Degree (2 year) at a local technical college to try and get my resume more appealing and to pad out my skills in case there are any gaps (the program mainly focuses on web development)

So the either or is which would be appealing, before or after completing this degree? There are definitely additional factors in my decision like how the tech college partners with local businesses to get their students into quality internships which really helps with getting hired. #GetFediHired

hey so. looking for a job (NZ or fully remote willing to hire a kiwi) in SRE, security, or linux/Unix system administration. 15 years experience administering Linux and Unix boxes, intermediate level of experience working with docker compose and containerisation and container security. No prior job experience unfortunately, all those 15 years were mostly personal projects and small-scale stuff for friends. I'm also 26, so I started when I was 11, explaining the no jobs so far. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at https://status.highenergymagic.net Three machines, 72 docker containers. One running most of them, one running Mastodon+glitchsocial, one running the uptime monitor. encrypted root on ZFS, alpine linux, gVisor on supported containers, plan to move to Kata. Entirely willing to accept entry-level job placements, no expectation of being paid a lot or anything, just want to be doing something and move the needle a little on my current "being broke" status.
