My mission this week is to fix the .deb package building for the MXE project. This is no small feat because it is a cross-compiling toolchain that compiles hundreds of packages and makes hundreds of .deb files as a result. I suspect the issue to be in the packaging scripts for binutils, or possibly in the upstream build scripts. It's going to be a grind, but that's what it takes to track these things down and get them fixed. 💪 #FOSS #OpenSource

All mainstream messaging platforms share the same model: a single provider owns the servers, logic, and #metadata. Between political pressure and regulatory proposals like #chatcontrol, such centralization is a liability. (more Linux and FOSS news in previous posts of thread) Zed, the AI-native code editor from the creators of Atom, has finally reached version 1.0: https://alternativeto.net/news/2026/4/zed-the-ai-native-code-editor-from-the-creators-of-atom-has-finally-reached-version-1-0/ Notepad++ finally comes to Mac through a native fork with plugin support after 23 years: https://alternativeto.net/news/2026/4/notepad--finally-comes-to-mac-with-a-native-app-and-plugin-support-after-23-years/ Warp goes open-source for easier agentic development and introduces broader model support: https://alternativeto.net/news/2026/4/warp-goes-open-source-for-easier-agentic-development-and-introduces-broader-model-support/ GCC 16 debuts C++20 by default, adds Algol 68 and boosts diagnostics: https://alternativeto.net/news/2026/4/gcc-16-debuts-c-20-by-default-adds-algol-68-and-boosts-diagnostics/ FosseryWeb progress report: Java Stacks and Queues Cheatsheet now available, so all planned Java cheatsheets are done. Also added optional JS notice to the main cheatsheets page (code block copy buttons already required JS earlier, I just decided to be more transparent about it, even if blocking JS doesn't break the pages). https://fosseryweb.codeberg.page/@beta/cheatsheets/ https://fosseryweb-min.codeberg.page/@beta/cheatsheets/ I also added a Projects page (based on the XDG spec's new Projects directory lol, just kidding), to make my other projects easier to access. Not much there currently, just Burner Todo, and my Joplin config, but I might make a CLI version of Burner Todo later on (I'll learn C++ at university, will be a good practice project), and if I manage to switch from GNOME to a tiling WM, I'll also share my configs (although I'm not really a tinkerer type, I just like to set things up how I want and forget it). https://fosseryweb.codeberg.page/@beta/projects.html https://fosseryweb-min.codeberg.page/@beta/projects.html I also did some code refactoring, to unify the code of some page components (header, footer, Related contents section, etc.), for better consistency, readability; and I also shortened the names of some asset directories which were unnecessarily long. @shrub900@mastodon.social I'm admittedly jealous b/c you had access to a #POSIX system (& a #FOSS one too!) from your earliest computer-using time in life. I “wasted”¹ my teenage years with a Commodore 64² — writing in BASIC & 6502 assembler. I was ≈ 18 years old before I got access to a “real” computer running #Unix SYSVR3.2.3 & ported #GNU #Emacs to it. ¹ I learned useful skills, but it yielded no useful artifacts. ² Yes, @cwebber@social.coop, I *was* keeping up with #Commodore, but it was *not* keeping up with me!!

@thunderbird@mastodon.online @ryanleesipes@mastodon.social

hello, am reporting this here in fedi coz your #github pages are a complete mystery to me. most of the other #FOSS projects i use, which have githubs, are easy to locate & then easy to open new Issues… but apparently not #thunderbird … afaict there’s 100 pages here, https://github.com/search?q=thunderbird&ref=opensearch&type=repositories&p=1, which is impossible to efficiently navigate. 🤯

afaict the #linux desktop version of :thunderbird: TB 150, including 150.0.1, have some pretty serious regressions that severely reduce its usability. atm, afaict, these are broken:

  • i can no longer convert any Task to an Event; the context menu item is greyed-out inactive – see pics 1 & 2
  • i can no longer adjust any options for the Today Pane; the context menu items are greyed-out inactive – see pic 3

can you pls confirm if these bugs are known, & being fixed? thx.

ps: i found these apparent bugs in my many-years-old TB profile, but have tested also in a clean virgin profile, & the pics are of that.

Google is an advertising company. Why would you expect honest searches from a company with profit incentives to show you bullshit ads? Also use Firefox already. 🤦‍♂️ Rant over. 😂 #google #firefox #commonsense #rant #foss #fuckcorporations

🆕 blog! “The cost of running OpenBenches.org” After my recent presentation at FOSDEM, someone asked a pretty reasonable question. What does it cost to run OpenBenches? It is, thankfully, surprisingly cheap! In part, that's because it is a relatively simple tech stack - PHP, MySQL, a couple of API calls to external services. It was designed to be as low cost while … 👀 Read more: https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2026/02/the-cost-of-running-openbenches-org/#fosdem #foss #money #OpenBenches

yesterday i upgraded one real & one virtual :fedora:#kinoite from 43 to 44. they included various layered pkgs, so i suspected i might be in for a rocky process. it went seamlessly, uneventfully, boringly. that's just lovely. sunday i shall do my other real kinoite's upgrade. gosh we're so lucky to have so much #FOSS goodness ❤️🐧

@anthropy@mastodon.derg.nz @mayadev@tilde.zone @Blender@mastodon.social how can you be sure of that. Yes, we don't live in the reality where blender is fully funded by donations but dismissing the notion by saying it wont exist without bigtech is dumb. First, its an opensource project, it will live on with contributors and forks Second, There are foss projects that were literally saved by donations, Thunderbird got a second life with that little donate pop-up notification. Blender could do the same. #blender #foss #bigtech #opensource
