General question to BSD Lab users. What would you like to see this instance run on, FreeBSD or OpenBSD? Not saying it will change from FreeBSD that it is currently on but it would be nice to see differing opinions. #bsdlab #BSD #FreeBSD #OpenBSD

:GoToSocial: :runbsd: This is my #GoToSocial (on #OpenBSD, on #bhyve, on #FreeBSD) instance, as seen from the garage. Doesn’t it look cute!?

With Apple phasing out AFP in macOS 27 and Time Capsules officially reaching end-of-life, it's time to move network backups to proper SMB. If you run a FreeBSD server, you can build a fast, rock-solid, and secure Time Machine target powered by ZFS and Samba - neatly isolated inside a FreeBSD jail using Bastille. https://it-notes.dragas.net/2026/01/28/time-machine-freebsd-jail/ Keep your macOS backups running smoothly via SMBv3 (with full vfs_fruit support) and full dataset quota control on ZFS! #FreeBSD #macOS #TimeMachine #ZFS #BastilleBSD #Samba #SysAdmin #Backup #OwnYourData #SelfHosted #BSD #RunBSD #OwnYourData

New toy for FreeBSD folks who run Ansible: a become plugin for mdo(1), the mac_do(4) counterpart to sudo/doas. The kernel decides whether the credential transition is allowed, so there is no password, no TTY, no doas.conf, and pipelining just works. Single file, BSD 2-Clause, tested against 15.1-RELEASE. https://github.com/chofstede/ansible-become-mdo Feedback welcome, especially from anyone already using mac_do in production. #FreeBSD #Ansible #RunBSD #DevOps #Automation

How much disk space does it take to reliably track & scan all the important open-source software releases published throughout the year? About 120TB. Thanks to #FreeBSD, #ZFS, #WesternDigital, and #Ampere for being awesome. :)

A bug in my Ansible connection plugin needed a real FreeBSD jail to reproduce. So I put three of them on an idle 512 MB free-tier VPS. With pkgbase, the base userland is just 33 MB. And persistent jails use zero idle processes. Here’s the build, the regression test, and the two sharp edges that cost me twenty minutes: https://blog.hofstede.it/three-test-jails-on-a-512-mb-free-tier-vps/ #FreeBSD #Ansible #pkgbase #SysAdmin #Devops

For my next trick, running mkjail upgrade -a to get the jails still on #FreeBSD 15.0 onto 15.1

mkjail will be greatly simplified under #pkgbase.

"Prevent cognitive debt by retyping LLM-generated code by hand" (I just installed gorss on my #FreeBSD server, and naturally Hacker News is a default subscription, and that is the title of a post there in the default feed when I launched it) You know, that would probably work just fine, to deal with cognitive debt. It also makes you into a 1980s 8-bit magazine kid, typing in a program off a printed page to get a chintzy Asteroids game... but that's actually a perfectly fine thing to be. And never mind acting as a backstop to cognitive in the already-skilled - all you vibe coders out there, if you did this, you would actually turn into real programmers, over time, if you have even the slightest acumen to handle the metaphysics.

Things the OS authors don't want you to know:

  • The #FreeBSD logo is Beastie, because it reminds you to dare, hack, and stop praying.
  • The #Linux logo is Tux, because even penguins know what it is like to freeze with amdgpu.
  • The #Windows logo is a window, because that is where you throw the PC goes after the third BSOD.
  • The #OpenBSD logo is Puffy, because it’s the only fish that takes security more seriously than being edible.
  • The #NetBSD logo is a flag, because if it boots on your hardware, they claim it as territory.
  • The #DragonFlyBSD logo is a dragonfly, because every time you explain HAMMER2, people suddenly find somewhere else to be.
  • The #macOS logo is an Apple, because one bite costs 999$, no 1999$, no 4999$. They soldered the RAM to keep the worms out.
  • The #ChromeOS logo is #chrome because the operating system is just the browser admitting it won.
