Sometimes I’ll go through my old saved git repos… People really want to keep “thefuck” alive even though it’s been dead for 2 years. Around 4000 forks..damn. https://github.com/nvbn/thefuck/issues Luckily people make their own rewrites. Although many of which have readmes filled with emojis, which turn me off….its like seeing Sysco outside of the restaurant your about to enter. #github #git #cli #linux #ai

@nelson@infosec.exchange #TIL you don't have to slavishly create a .gitignore for every project, and you don't have to broadcast personal files you are ignoring. I've used #git for years, and this is a revelation... https://nelson.cloud/.gitignore-isnt-the-only-way-to-ignore-files-in-git/ Thank you Nelson, whoever you are!

How do people manage to shoot themselves with rm? I’ve done so with disk partitioning, I’ve done that with #Git, but I can’t think of any such cases with rm 🤔 (Maybe it’s because I’m doing most of my file management with #Emacs + Dired…) #Linux #Unix

Why is .config/ in git repositories not a thing? As an XDG_CONFIG equivalent to move .vscode, .zed, .forgejo away from the repository root, that would be pretty nice. #git #forgejo #gitea #vscode #zededitor

✍️ I wrote a post about my git superpower; being able to visualise git history in the CLI. It's no secret, but is one of my most useful aliases I have! Check it out 👀 https://www.jamestitcumb.com/posts/git-log-graph-history-visualisation #git #gitlog

A lot of #git commands are annoying on #OpenBSD because their output always fills the screen: e.g. “git branch” shows main my-other-branch ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ [and so on, filling the screen] To fix, run git config --global core.pager 'less -c' but beware! Using this setting on Linux *causes* the same problem we saw on OpenBSD, since less interprets the “-c” flag the opposite way.

#TIL that #git has an --end-of-options option because they hijacked -- in git checkout. 🤦

#openSource community: If you move away from Big Tech because you want more freedom, transparency and arbitrary platform decisions… Can (not may) a platform like #Codeberg decide which kinds of projects are welcome? Or is that the 1st step onto a slippery slope where today’s “obvious” exclusions become tomorrow’s subjective ones? Where do you draw the line between responsible stewardship and becoming the gatekeeper you wanted to escape? 🤔 https://マリウス.com/i-regret-migrating-to-codeberg/ #Git #Forgejo #FOSS #LLM

RE: https://social.tchncs.de/@codefloe/116963861098218609 Although I appreciate what Codeberg does, I also recommend CodeFloe. I've been using it for several months now and it has works flawlessly! It's particularly suited for your non-Open Source software and they don't have an Anti-AI clause. Bonus for better uptime in my experience. #hosting #forgejo #git #codefloe
