TIL portable breathalyzers aren't _**generally**_ admissable in court

EDIT: The law is complicated on this topic and it varies by region. I didn’t think this needed saying when I made the post, but this isnt an end all be all on the topic, it’s just something I found interesting & posted it to c/Today I Learned. Don’t take legal advice from a Lemmy post. Talk to a lawyer. The Purpose of Portable Breath Tests Portable breath tests are commonly used by law enforcement officers to quickly estimate a person’s blood alcohol content (BAC) at the scene of a suspected DUI offense. These handheld devices are designed to provide immediate results, helping officers in their decision-making process during a traffic stop or investigation. It is essential to understand that a portable breath test is different from the more accurate breathalyzer devices used at police stations or during formal chemical testing. While portable breath tests can provide an initial indication of a person’s intoxication level, they should not be considered as wholly accurate or infallible. rhilllaw.com/…/can-a-portable-breath-test-be-used…

TIL that for the bee sting death scene in My Girl (1991), production used thousands of real bees on a 10 year old Macaulay Culkin. To attract them, his hands were coated in a queen bee scent, and when the director yelled "cut," Culkin was told to run into the woods to escape. https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2025/11/28/macaulay-culkin-my-girl-bee-scene-real-bees/87508719007/ #til #todayilearned https://www.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/1u57i32/til_that_for_the_bee_sting_death_scene_in_my_girl/

TIL author John Green noted the global history of Hawaiian pizza: a Canadian invention by a Greek immigrant, inspired by Chinese cuisine, that put a South American fruit on an Italian dish and became popular in Australia. So it was only yesterday when I learned that some of the spiritual and work songs sung by Black slaves here in the US were used to communicate messages and directions on how to escape. "Harriet Tubman; a significant American Abolitionist who saved many enslaved Africans from slavery through the Underground Railroad used songs such as “Go Down Moses," to indicate safety and “Wade in the Water” to signal escapees to get in the water to hide their scent." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songs_of_the_Underground_Railroad #TIL #history #BlackHistory #UndergroundRailroad #slavery #music #songs

TIL: That in 2021 almost 50% of adult Canadians struggle with literacy

Despite relatively high education rates, an analysis of international assessments by Statistics Canada in 2013 showed that more than one in six adult Canadians fell short of passing the most basic set of literacy tests.

TIL the stop motion film industry is propped up by one rich kid

Basically, the only modern studio consistently putting out stop motion animation movies, is Laika Studios. And yet, Laika has only had one financially successful movie, Coraline from 2009, while all their other movies have under performed. However, Laika is currently led and owned by Travis Knight, son of Phil Knight, the owner of Nike. This has enabled Knight to continually bank roll Laika whenever they under perform, essentially making the entire stop motion animation film industry a nepo baby’s pet project. That being said, this is actually a positive story, and reminiscent of how artists previously would be financially supported by wealthy benefactors.

Imagine being a scientist, and being told that your mere presence in a facility would alter the crystals being grown, that no joke you cannot step foot inside: Scientists who had been exposed to Form II in the past seemingly contaminated entire manufacturing plants by their presence, probably because they carried over microscopic seed crystals of the new polymorph Fact, not fiction! In materials science, a disappearing polymorph is a form of a crystal structure (a morph) that is suddenly unable to be produced, instead transforming into a different crystal structure with the same chemical composition (a polymorph) during nucleation and points for being airborne! In a few cases, such as progesterone and paroxetine hydrochloride, the disappearance gradually spread across the world, and it is suspected that it is because Earth's atmosphere has over time become permeated with tiny seed crystals https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearing_polymorph #science #TIL #crystals

#TIL that in the 90s, several countries in Europe and Asia introduced cordless telephone systems that were an interim between home cordless phones and cellular devices. They used a home hotspot, and there would be some hotspots in public places like train stations and some roads, but the phones would have coverage through the pager service when out and about, and the user would go find a hotspot to dial in and check their messages when they got a notification. Really intriguing, I'd never heard of anything like that before! Ringway Manchester — I Can’t Figure Out These Strange Radio Devices.
