Later this week #GitHub introduces a way to limit how many pull requests users without write access can have open at one time... As a way to combat heaps of low-quality PRs. I'll start out trying with this set to 2 for #curl.

I know many people who are aware of the importance of #FreedomRespecting software, data, and culture - and the related issues of digital sovereignty and privacy.

Paradoxically, a lot of these people also participate in, or even maintain, communities hosted on #nonfree / #proprietary / #restricted or #centralized platforms like #Telegram, #Discord, #WhatsApp, #Signal, #Instagram, #Facebook, #Twitter, #LinkedIn, #Bluesky, #GitHub, and others.

To state the obvious, each community which chooses a proprietary platform - or bridges to it - is also giving another reason for others to be on that platform. It’s reinforcing network effect.

Conversely, if these communities chose to move to free platforms, their members would be forced to move as well. In other words, these communities have the opportunity to push for change on a massive scale.

Sure, you have to reach out to people on proprietary platforms, if that’s where the majority are. But you cannot be stopping there - you must have a strategy to move people away from proprietary platforms to free platforms.

To give the example of #OpenStreetMap -

  • I announce events on free platforms sooner
  • I remind people on proprietary platforms that they should join the free platforms to get notified earlier
  • After each event, we invite people to our #XMPP channel, which is not bridged to any other platform.
  • All organizational talk takes place on our XMPP channel, which is not bridged to any other platform.
  • I minimize my participation on proprietary platforms, and communities which bridge to them. The bulk of my activity happens on free platforms.
  • I have never submitted data to Mapillary or KartaView, because their clients and servers are proprietary. All my contributions go to #WikimediaCommons and #Panoramax.

So to the people who are choosing - and therefore promoting - proprietary platforms, I ask…

How do you think things are going to change, if everyone keeps choosing what is easiest for them, and keeps choosing, supporting, and promoting proprietary platforms?

What part are you playing in making things better? Or are you just going to go with the flow of the world, even if you know it to be wrong?

They don’t like answering these questions, but I invite them to find the integrity and courage to answer them all the same.

Or, to find the integrity and courage to make the obvious change and do the obvious right thing.

People hate it when I bring this up. Sorry, but my conscience dictates that I speak up for what is right. Silence is complicity, and it gets us nowhere.

#linux #PDF #github

#Microsoft #Github what even does "security" mean to you anymore? Something like this https://www.theregister.com/security/2026/06/08/github-nukes-70-microsoft-repos-amid-suspected-worm-attack/5252169 should have a front page announcement and an SVP or C-level person giving clear, regular, and prompt updates. Instead, https://github.blog/security/ is devoid of any news and you've dropped the ball *again*. Maybe this is a trivial issue, and no client exposure, but this is not the first time you failed abysmally to do even the most cursory of public facing statements about security. Get your shit sorted.

Times of India | Microsoft launches GitHub Copilot desktop app to manage multiple AI agents AI generated summary, Read the full article for complete information. GitHub introduced a new desktop application for Copilot, unveiled at Microsoft Build 2026, that serves as a centralized control hub for multiple AI coding agents. The tool offers a “My Work” dashboard where developers can monitor and direct agents across different repositories, with each session running in an isolated Git worktree to avoid branch conflicts. New features include visual “Canvases” that display an agent’s plan, terminal output, and deployments in real time, allowing users to edit or redirect tasks directly, as well as secure sandbox environments—either local or cloud‑hosted—to test code safely. Additionally, the app provides “Agent Merge,” an automation that watches CI pipelines, handles reviewer requirements, resolves failing checks, and merges code once predefined organizational criteria are met. The application is currently in technical preview for Copilot premium users. #ohjelmointi #github #codeberg

Everyone loves jeering at vibecoded #GitHub being down all the time. Yet for some reason people still neglect to question making #Microsoft the primary guarantor of their software's supply chain #security. And the whole attestation nonsense that doesn't really protect against the most likely attack vectors.

@thunderbird@mastodon.online @ryanleesipes@mastodon.social

hello, am reporting this here in fedi coz your #github pages are a complete mystery to me. most of the other #FOSS projects i use, which have githubs, are easy to locate & then easy to open new Issues… but apparently not #thunderbird … afaict there’s 100 pages here, https://github.com/search?q=thunderbird&ref=opensearch&type=repositories&p=1, which is impossible to efficiently navigate. 🤯

afaict the #linux desktop version of :thunderbird: TB 150, including 150.0.1, have some pretty serious regressions that severely reduce its usability. atm, afaict, these are broken:

  • i can no longer convert any Task to an Event; the context menu item is greyed-out inactive – see pics 1 & 2
  • i can no longer adjust any options for the Today Pane; the context menu items are greyed-out inactive – see pic 3

can you pls confirm if these bugs are known, & being fixed? thx.

ps: i found these apparent bugs in my many-years-old TB profile, but have tested also in a clean virgin profile, & the pics are of that.

Seriously considering a switch from #GitHub to #Codeberg after reading the post below, but I'm not sure I have the energy for it. https://dbushell.com/2026/04/29/github-is-sinking/ https://kevquirk.com/2026-04-29-1655
