Question for the community. How's y'all's experience with various Instant Messaging services? I don't use discord except with some of my friends, and I'm trying to get away, as it seems to be going the way of enshittification. I've used Matrix before, and I'm aware of some of the technical annoyances as a user. Does it tend to have good community (like, among gay nerdy Mastodon folks at least?). What about the other options, like XMPP clients, or like Delta Chat or something? I believe I've even heard (i might be wrong) that IRC 3 allows for asynchronous texting, so you don't have to be online in order to keep receiving messages that you can read later? Is this a thing? Everytime I look this up, I can't find any good info one way or the other. Even if there's no community, I'm curious what y'all think has the potential to become a somewhat ubiquitous technology among folks on Fedi? :blobfoxcomfycomputer: #privacy #discord I recently tried deleting some messages from Discord (out of 150k+ messages I sent in total, 20K were "eligible") using Discorch (discorch.org), but it's a real pain in the ass Discord doesn't allow deletion requests for messages if they are in a server or grouped DMs you are still a part of (and private DMs don't count because they are "always accessible" on their terms) For the messages you want to delete, you have to send a deletion request (GDPR if in EU), and that's where Discorch helps : it scans all the messages from the discord data package, puts the eligible one in a csv, and writes a pre-formatted request for you :blobfoxhappy: And what's also neat is that the code runs locally, and is entirely open source and available on Codeberg! Now to wait for the response (if they comply) :blobfoxsipglare: and if that works, I'll probably leave most servers I'm in to delete more messages

We've been a little quiet lately 👀, but silence just means we've been heads-down building something exciting. The Discord account of Minecraft YouTuber avatardotpng has been compromised, according to a post in his official Discord server and posts in Kenadian's Discord server. Fellow YouTuber Stayed is at present in control of avatar's Discord server, as avatar gave her ownership prior to the compromise. She has muted the compromised account. According to a message from avatar's friend Adder, his computer was infected with malware. #avatardotpng #Discord

Ok, as an alternative to Discord, Chatto (https://github.com/chattocorp/chatto) is looking rather promising.

  • AGPL

  • can be easily self hosted

  • Paid hosting available in EU (better privacy protection)

  • Written in Go

  • mobile apps on roadmap

  • web app is good on both mobile and desktop browsers

  • one client can connect to multiple servers

I have a demo instance running on my homelab and I could see opening this up to my friends using tailscale funnels.

Hey, there. We all know that there are countless cosy and nice communities on #Discord of all kinds that many of us found a lot of friends and (used to) spend a majority of our time socialising in. I used to be able to instantly find nice and welcoming communities about basically any topic – #conlangs, #games, #art, #queer stuff – many of which resulted in amazing friendships and great times. But since I've practically moved off Discord for everything but work, it's been getting lonely. People gradually lost touch, there are no more nightly voice chats, no more life updates, no more new friends, no more cosy community moments. If I'm being honest, the second I left Discord, I stopped making online friends altogether. The #Fediverse is really cool, but it's very rare for people to just text you and take it to DMs and become regular friends you talk to every day. Mostly because it's a social media platform and not a messenger. And that's kinda sad. So I will #AskFedi – does anyone here know any specific non-Discord-based cosy communities like the ones we used to have? Like, places to just hop into a chat and hang out in every night, #Minecraft servers where the folks actually know each other, queer friend and support groups, gaming spaces, hobby-based communities, and so on? I don't mind any medium whether it's #Matrix or #Mumble or Signal or anything else. I'm just yearning for that state of life where I had tons of potential new friends, communities and good times at the press of a button back then. The time you could just join 'something something cafe' you found on Disboard or whatever and immediately make friends with the local folks by just hanging out and posting a bit. (I'm looking for personal recommendations of communities to check out. I'm not looking for people to just direct me to public directories of Matrix channels or whatever, sorry. I am fully aware of those; but everything listed there usually are empty and inactive places that hardly see any authentic interaction between people ever because they were only created for the sake of existing on said software, but nobody actually uses them for fun)

I know many people who are aware of the importance of #FreedomRespecting software, data, and culture - and the related issues of digital sovereignty and privacy.

Paradoxically, a lot of these people also participate in, or even maintain, communities hosted on #nonfree / #proprietary / #restricted or #centralized platforms like #Telegram, #Discord, #WhatsApp, #Signal, #Instagram, #Facebook, #Twitter, #LinkedIn, #Bluesky, #GitHub, and others.

To state the obvious, each community which chooses a proprietary platform - or bridges to it - is also giving another reason for others to be on that platform. It's reinforcing network effect.

Conversely, if these communities chose to move to free platforms, their members would be forced to move as well. In other words, these communities have the opportunity to push for change on a massive scale.

Sure, you have to reach out to people on proprietary platforms, if that's where the majority are. But you cannot be stopping there - you must have a strategy to move people away from proprietary platforms to free platforms.

To give the example of #OpenStreetMap -

  • I announce events on free platforms sooner
  • I remind people on proprietary platforms that they should join the free platforms to get notified earlier
  • After each event, we invite people to our #XMPP channel, which is not bridged to any other platform.
  • All organizational talk takes place on our XMPP channel, which is not bridged to any other platform.
  • I minimize my participation on proprietary platforms, and communities which bridge to them. The bulk of my activity happens on free platforms.
  • I have never submitted data to Mapillary or KartaView, because their clients and servers are proprietary. All my contributions go to #WikimediaCommons and #Panoramax.

So to the people who are choosing - and therefore promoting - proprietary platforms, I ask...

How do you think things are going to change, if everyone keeps choosing what is easiest for them, and keeps choosing, supporting, and promoting proprietary platforms?

What part are you playing in making things better? Or are you just going to go with the flow of the world, even if you know it to be wrong?

They don't like answering these questions, but I invite them to find the integrity and courage to answer them all the same.

Or, to find the integrity and courage to make the obvious change and do the obvious right thing.

People hate it when I bring this up. Sorry, but my conscience dictates that I speak up for what is right. Silence is complicity, and it gets us nowhere.

Soooo #discord will soon force people to age verify for nsfw channels. I also own multiple discord bots and i hit the 100 server now you need to hand over your ID thing. Yea no. I will not KYC myself on such an insecure platform that does not care about user safety amd recently even leaked user ID's in a breach of their zendesk support form. No thanks. What alternative are you using? Please hit me up. For dm's or groups i use signal, but for voice calls or servets i still need a replacement. #ageverification #kyc

oof, #Discord is blocking VPNs a bit more now. I just received the generic "this message could not be delivered, click here for possible reasons" because I was connected to a VPN. I had to drop the VPN to respond to my friend. 😮‍💨
