@MelissaBearTrix@gives.hugz.online #ageverification is not about protecting kids. Its about identifying adults. The "internet passport" statists and authoritarians were masturbating over for the last 30 years. (I know I'm repeating myself)

@n_dimension@infosec.exchange @MelissaBearTrix@gives.hugz.online #AgeVerification is also about discouraging #FreeSoftware , which has never required a central authority, in favor of closed software, which pushes you to create an account on a commercial entities server ( Microsoft / Apple iCloud / Google ). To me, that is the real agenda behind this age verification bullshit. Closed software vendors, which are a dying breed, have the deep pockets to lobby politicians, and bamboozle the people through media, into passing a superficially reasonable, but very insidious law. Let us spread awareness about this issue, and educate people.

Activism makes a difference: the SCREEN Act unexpectedly fails in committee! https://thenexusofprivacy.net/activism-makes-a-difference/ But KOSA advances, so we really do need to keep the pressure up. @fight@mastodon.fightforthefuture.org's https://www.badinternetbills.com/ is still a good way to contact your Senators. @general #KOSA #ageVerification #fediverse #organizing

if you’re in the US, please be aware there’s a new set of laws being discussed at the Senate THIS WEDNESDAY that threatens your privacy and freedom of speech on the internet. if these pass the Senate like they passed the House, there’s a good chance that every website will implement an ID checkpoint to force you to verify your age. this is your LAST CHANCE to contact your senator and let them know that you don’t want these laws to pass. you can go to the following website to contact them more easily. PLEASE let your friends and everyone know, both here, on other platforms, or offline, about this situation. we are all in this together. acteff.org/campaign/167270/ #ageverification #uspol #politics #privacy #dystopia

🚨 The text is up https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/s5090/text for S.5090, a federal Digital Age Assurance Act, and it is very not good:

  • There is no #OpenSource exemption!

  • It requires users to “establish an account with the provider”. (§3(a)(1)(A)(i)) This makes local/offline accounts, as is typical on #Linux, #Windows 10, etc, illegal.

[see thread; there's much more]

This #ageVerification bill is a dramatic escalation in the politicians' war against #privacy and #FOSS. Call your senators!!!

I have an old bluesky account that I seldom use. I logged in this morning and was faced with an age verification page. I always use a VPN and it thought I was in Texas so I disabled it and, living in Oklahoma, I was able to get right in with no age verification... For now... So, it looks like if you live in Texas this is a sign of things to come and something many more of us will probably have to deal with in the future. I'm not sharing my associated Google account nor am I going to use their "trusted" partner KWS. Fortunately they let you delete your account through email without having to age verify. #ageverification

Americans! Updates on "Internet Safety" bills: -Hawley and Durbin are trying to sneak the unconstitutional STOP CSAM Act into the FY27 NDAA. Hawley allegedly managed to get it included it in the manager's amendment. This means it has a higher chance than previous attempts at being successful. -Still, there's procedural roadblocks that the bill has to clear to survive until the final passage. The manager's amendment is reserved for uncontroversial amendments. -The Senate Commerce Committee has scheduled a markup for KOSA and the SCREEN Act for Wednesday, August 5th. There are other bills, but they're far less problematic than KOSA and the SCREEN Act. -Senate KOSA's fate in the House is still quite uncertain. The same goes for the KIDS Act's fate in the Senate. -The SCREEN Act's approval among Democrats is unknown at the moment. Call your Senators and Representatives ASAP! #Privacy #Censorship #DigitalRights #FreeSpeech #AgeVerification #ClientSideScanning #Section230 #KOSA #KidsOnlineSafetyAct #US #UnitedStates

What will Mastodon do if the #ageverification comes to here as well? I know that Mastodon itself is not centralized but let's say the server owner of a Mastodon instance lives in a country where the age verification laws are in effect.

"Watermarks like SynthID are encoded in the pixels of an image or video or in the waveform of an audio clip. Just so you know, we need to push back against privacy-invasive regulations. Each and every time. Shrugging and using a VPN will not save you. They will come for the VPNs next. Then the ISPs. Then more. Pushing against unjust laws matters. The tools alone will not save you in the long run. #Privacy #PrivacyLaw #AgeVerification

Look a gift horse in the mouth, especially when surveillance is labeled "free." The story was posted on July 24. "'Approved' users will receive a badge across those services, with Feed posts to follow. Meta will compare the selfie with photographs already displayed on the user’s profile, a process it says should take only a few minutes." For the record, I am positively fuming over the new #AgeVerification laws being introduced in France. How convenient that this way Big Tech behemoths like Meta, X and TikTok won't have to change a thing. (Don't get me started about Grok, which should have been banned MONTHS ago). AGE isn't the problem. It's the TOXIC, PREDATORY, EXTRACTIVE nature of these platforms that is the real issue. They are getting away scot-free. I hate it. All I can do is speak up with those around me 🫤

The scariest thing about new #AgeVerification laws being introduced in Europe (France, I was expecting more from you) is to see the positive reactions of my family members, who have fallen hook, line and sinker for the arguments discussed in the media. "It's to protect the children!" No it isn't. I'm sending this superb article by the @eff@mastodon.social to all of them: 🔗: https://www.eff.org/issues/age-verification Now is the time to #resist and speak up and educate those around us ✊ #privacy
