#Wikipedia just dodged a bullet in the UK but is still in danger. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2026-07-13/Special_report The bullet was the possibility of Category 1 classification under the UK Online Safety Act. It was spared that classification but remains on a "watch list" of platforms that "could become Category 1 at any point in the future." If Wikipedia is later classified as Category 1, then either (1) contributors could no longer be pseudonymous or (2) Wikipedia would be subject to severe penalties under UK law. How severe? The maximum penalty could include a fine up to £18 million, a UK-wide denial of access, and personal criminal liability for senior managers. #Anonymity #OnlineSafetyAct #UKLaw

I'm currently on holiday with @PrinceMumbles@mastodonapp.uk and have been enjoying spending some time here in Scotland, though did entirely forget that Scotland unlike everywhere else in the UK does not in fact have Sunday trading laws so the shops are actually open "Normal times" today. While I don't know if I want to actually get rid of Sunday trading laws elsewhere (As having worked in retail knowing you at least get the Sunday late afternoon / evening off is nice) but it is weird being somewhere in the UK and seeing people leaving supermarkets at 7:30pm on a Sunday! #Scotland #SundayTrading #UKLaw

The U.K. is to ban smoking for anyone born after 2008. A final draft of legislation making it illegal for shops to sell tobacco to anyone born after Jan. 1 2009 is ready for royal assent. Here's a thought experiment to ponder. Take the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, and replace dog with AI agent. https://legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1991/65/section/3 It even has provision for falling back from the owner to the person(s) immediately in charge of the relevant computer system. Six months in stir for being the owner or enabler of an "AI" system that blackmails or extorts people (both of which have already happened in the real world — This part is not, alas, hypothetical.). #UKLaw #AIs #AIslop
