No, Artificial Intelligence Is Not Conscious --Ted Chiang, The Atlantic Should we seriously consider the possibility that Claude, or any large language model, might be conscious? And if it has feelings, is it capable of receiving moral instruction? No. Absolutely not. Generative AI is harmful enough when we understand it as a conventional technology, but if we confuse fluency at generating text with consciousness or moral agency, we’re at risk of assigning responsibility to entirely the wrong parties whenever anyone uses a chatbot. Being open to the possibility that LLMs are conscious is the same as being open to the possibility that Microsoft Word is conscious, or, more precisely, that multiple distinct consciousnesses are dormant in every Word document containing a conversational transcript, and that they are awakened every time the document is loaded. Should you consider the possibility that every time you open a Word document, you are bringing multiple conscious interlocutors into existence, and every time you close one, you snuff their existence out? No. Contemplating that scenario is not a good use of your time. Even if the Microsoft Office team employed a philosopher who said you shouldn’t be so certain, because consciousness is not well understood, that would not be sufficient reason for you to take this idea seriously. Another great story about the impact of AI with no mention to it in the headline of the story: In South Korea a Starbucks marketing campaign is created using AI and executives don't even bother to open the email attachments to check the proposals. The campaign was published on the date of a pro-democracy protesters massacre calling it Tank Day and using slogans clearly drawing from the deadly military attack, which felt deeply unrespectful to the victims. The AI most likely learned that from far-right forums like Ilbe where mocking the victims is common. They cancelled the campaign hours after publishing it but it was too late, the CEO has been sacked, card payments went down a 26%, refunds haven been requested from prepaid cards, police is investigating and Starbucks asked costumers to refrain from directing their anger to staff. #ai #aislop #starbucks https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/jun/06/starbucks-south-korea-tank-day-promotion-blunder

We've reached the point where we're having to actively degrade the UI and remove useful features of the small scientific database I co-maintain (https://xronos.ch) to try and reduce the extreme load imposed by (unwanted and politely-asked-to-go-away) AI crawler bots. Conversations about new features have to ask whether it's going to make the crawler load problem worse. #OpenData #OpenScience #AIslop #Archaeology

It would surely not be beyond the wit of a hyper-intelligent #AGI to do such apportioning equally, without reliance on a crude accounting device we call 'money'. Strangely, the Broligarchs with the greatest wealth _and_ income do not seem to see it as in their interests to develop such a revolutionary #AI, preferring to distract us instead with #AIslop of nonconsensually nudified women and images of Donald Jesus Trump as a Deity, False Idol, or Fatted Calf...
