"Andy Burnham is expected to scrap Keir Starmer’s plans for digital ID cards in a “reset of priorities” when he enters Downing Street on Monday. The new Labour leader plans to redirect the resources earmarked for the scheme towards tackling the cost of living, his team indicated on Saturday. The Guardian understands the proposals are being outlined in an attempt to distance the incoming prime minister from unpopular choices made by his predecessor. A petition opposing the introduction of digital ID cards when it was announced last year attracted about 3m signatures. “One of the first things this government will do is put its focus where people need it right now: creating breathing space and delivering change they can feel in their everyday lives,” Burnham’s spokesperson said. “That means all the time and resource that was going to be spent on a national ID scheme will go instead to where it’s most needed, such as helping with the cost of living." https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jul/18/burnham-to-scrap-starmers-digital-id-scheme-in-reset-of-priorities #UK #DigitalID #Surveillance #Privacy #Burnham

Is it bye bye bye for UK Digital ID? As ORG’s @jim@social.openrightsgroup.org said, this scheme would risk “creating a digital surveillance infrastructure that will change everyone’s daily lives.” Another authoritarian assault on our rights could hit the shredder as Burnham heads to No.10. We’ll wait and see… https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jul/18/burnham-to-scrap-starmers-digital-id-scheme-in-reset-of-priorities #digitalid #surveillance #privacy #ukpolitics #ukpol

this is absolutely fantastic news - current proposal is flawed and completely unworkable. I'd suggest to go further & review eVisa scheme https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jul/18/burnham-to-scrap-starmers-digital-id-scheme-in-reset-of-priorities however, if Burnham & his team are going to stick with U-16 social media ban, how do they think it's going to work? because social media ban is pretty much a "soft" version of Digital ID #Privacy #Surveillance #DigitalID #Security #SocialMedia #SocialMediaBan #Tech #Technology #UnitedKingdom #UK #eVisa #Immigration

I'm buying a new car right now and I hadn't realized how bad things have gotten in the EU. Every new car now has to ship with "Intelligent Speed Assistance" and "Advanced Driver Distraction Warning". It sound reasonable, but in practice they're implemented soo badly. I tested a new Toyota. The speed assistance beeps at you the moment you go 1 km/h over the limit, which every driver knows happens from time to time. I set cruise control to 50 and it still beeped when we hit a hill or went over a bump and drifted to 51. This happened all the time. The distraction warning is even worse. It scans your face to check you're paying attention, and it's full of false alarms. On a completely empty road you can't even glance at the scenery around you. Have you ever taken a road trip?! I get that we want safer roads, but this isn't the way. Make people responsible for their actions instead. Speeding? - pay a real fine, or lose your license. Don't meddle with everyone's driving in real time. Same pattern from #EU as #DigitalID and Chat Control. Forced on everyone, badly built, no opt-out. These technologies should be optional, properly tested, and actually improved before they're mandatory. Not forced onto us.

By the end of 2026 the EU must hand a digital identity wallet to ~450 million people — passport, driver's licence, diploma and bank details in one phone app. Cryptographers say it "phones home" on every scan. 500 experts warned in 2023. Brussels shipped it anyway. This is the identity layer of the same architecture as the digital euro. The UK PM has just announced an under-16 social media ban. This is the 'Trojan Horse' in action. You cannot enforce a ban without an Age Verification layer, and you can’t have Age Verification without a National Digital ID or bio-metric database. They are using the 'child safety' card to build a mandatory surveillance gate for the entire internet. Between the new taxes and the constant bans, it’s clear this government has zero respect for personal agency or digital sovereignty. If you aren't already moving your data off the cloud and into your own home lab, start now. The gap between our current society and a total surveillance state just got a whole lot smaller. #UKPolitics #OnlineSafetyAct #Privacy #Surveillance #DigitalID #AgeVerification #MassSurveillance #DigitalRights

The UK social media ban for under-16s does nothing to sort out the harms caused by platforms. Harmful content is a product of a business model that uses data to drive engagement and target users with ads. Digital ID checks feed more data into this system, while leaving the engine for harms unchecked. Image scanning for nudes 🤝 digital ID checks This will affect everyone. All adults will have to hand over their ID to turn off the blocks on their phone. But the scanning software will hang around. Something that could end up being used to censor much more. We can't allow this trojan horse tech. ORG's @JamesBaker@social.openrightsgroup.org spoke to TalkTV about the UK government's plans. https://peertube.openrightsgroup.org/w/6dYE596iFv5viV5QHemnR8 #censorship #ageverification #digitalID #privacy #ukpolitics #ukpol

🚨 LAST CHANCE 🚨 The UK government's online safety consultation closes TODAY. We must push back against more and more online ID checks. Making every adult hand over sensitive data to unregulated providers is itself UNSAFE. Let's take on Big Tech business models instead! 1 DAY TO GO ⏰️ 💭 Tell the UK government to rethink online safety. ❌️ Creating a privacy timebomb with surveillance-based information blockades isn't the way. ✅️ We need user choice and better platform design, NOT mandatory ID checks. Have your say on a better way by 26 May ➡️ https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation #onlinesafety #ageverification #digitalID #privacy #interoperability #bigtech #ukpolitics #ukpol

We're paying a huge price for a policy that doesn't work. People adapt what they do online when parts of the Internet are put behind intrusive ID checks. Why carry on like this when young Australians have found ways to bypass the social media ban? Have your say by 26 May in the UK consultation ➡️ https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation #onlinesafety #privacy #ageverification #digitalID #digitalrights #socialmediaban #ukpolitics #ukpol

" we need to consider whether additional measures could build on our existing approach and ensure the UK remains the safest place for children to be online. [...] What happens next This consultation will close on the 26 May 2026. The government has committed to taking swift action on its findings. On 16 February 2026, the Prime Minister announced new legal powers to allow the government to act swiftly after the consultation response, without waiting for new primary legislation. Digital checkpoints will crop up all over the Internet after UK MPs backed new powers to expand age verification. The only way to block under-16s is to run checks on everybody. That's millions more people having to hand over personal data to unregulated providers just to access everyday services. Papers, please! Digital ID age checks have taken another lunge forward. UK MPs have agreed to new powers to expand age verification across online platforms. More and more everyday web services will be locked behind digital checkpoints, despite the serious privacy and security risks of this system.
