🚨 First the social media ban, now the UK government wants to restrict VPNs 🚨 VPNs are a vital cybersecurity tool for businesses, politicians, journalists and families to protect data and communications. Banning or requiring digital ID checks before buying VPNs would increase cybercrime risks and expose IP addresses to predators. https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/2217934/vpn-ban-table-july-labour #vpn #socialmediaban #ageverification #ukpolitics #cybersecurity #onlinesafety #ukpolitics #ukpol

“Open Rights Group encourages people around the world who want a human-rights based approach to tackling harm to join this movement." We can't stand by as governments pursue online safety in ways that gut our rights to privacy and free expression. 🗣️ ORG's @JamesBaker@social.openrightsgroup.org. #StopKillingTheInternet #StopKillingInternet #socialmediaban #openinternet #privacy #freeexpression #ukpolitics #ukpol

Governments are moving toward bans, scanning, curfews and restrictions that could change the internet for everyone. #StopKillingTheInternet supports rights-respecting approaches to child protection, privacy, democratic accountability and platform responsibility. The movement launches on 27 June ⬇️ #StopKillingTheInternet #StopKillingInternet #socialmediaban #openinternet #privacy #freeexpression #ukpolitics #ukpol

“Soon it will be virtually impossible to be online in the UK without handing over identity documents or biometric data to unregulated companies.” The social media ban means EVERY user has to prove they're over 16. This puts millions at risk of their personal data being hacked. 🗣️ ORG's @JamesBaker@social.openrightsgroup.org. https://www.computerweekly.com/news/366644294/Big-tech-must-introduce-age-checks-to-support-UKs-under-16s-social-media-ban #stopKillingInternet #StopKillingTheInternet #socialmediaban #socialmedia #ageverification #onlinesafety #privacy #censorship #ukpolitics #ukpol

@dansup@mastodon.social I'm curious, With the UK's new Ban on Social Media for under 16s forcing users to most likely to have to ID verify for Instagram and other central socials (including YouTube and TikTok). How do you think this would effect the Fediverse a whole, PixelFed, Loops and more. (Also believe Canada is looking into a similar ban) #UKSocialMedia #SocialMediaBan #SocialMediaBanUK #IDVerification

Social media bans don't work. Yet it's happening globally as leaders try to grab headlines with creeping digital ID checks. This doesn't take on how platforms are designed to capture users' attention with harmful content through data-driven algorithms so they can sell ads. A global movement to #stopKillingInternet is coming. Bans will wall off the open Internet. Kids locked out and adults pushed through digital ID checks. Connection and access to information is being swept away for a policy that leaves platforms free to continue promoting harmful content for profit. "Every failed attempt to make children safer online is followed by more surveillance and censorship. Children have rights too and these policies will harm their free expression and privacy rights, and push them into less regulated spaces." 🗣️ ORG's James Baker on the under-16s social media ban. https://www.theregister.com/personal-tech/2026/06/15/britain-plots-digital-bedtime-after-kicking-under-16s-off-social-media/5255341 #socialmediaban #ukpol #onlinesafety #stopKillingInternet #ukpolitics

A social media ban won't fix online harms. That's because the business model creating them is left untouched. It just makes every user do an ID check to prove they’re over 16. Instead we should tackle the attention capture economy of targeted ads and personalised algorithms. The UK social media ban for under-16s does nothing to sort out the harms caused by platforms. Harmful content is a product of a business model that uses data to drive engagement and target users with ads. Digital ID checks feed more data into this system, while leaving the engine for harms unchecked. RE: https://mastodon.online/@joho/116730558955694159 Did anyone propose age verification for TV-News? If not, why? Can you really broadcast pictures and videos of corpses and massacres at 7 PM without checking, whether an 8-year old is in front of the TV? Block Imgur but show pictures of dead people attacked by a terrorist in a car? Yeah, hypocrites. The entire age verification BS is a lobby-endeavour sponsored by Meta. #ageverification #privacy #meta #socialmediaban

We're paying a huge price for a policy that doesn't work. People adapt what they do online when parts of the Internet are put behind intrusive ID checks. Why carry on like this when young Australians have found ways to bypass the social media ban? Have your say by 26 May in the UK consultation ➡️ https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/growing-up-in-the-online-world-a-national-consultation #onlinesafety #privacy #ageverification #digitalID #digitalrights #socialmediaban #ukpolitics #ukpol

Digital checkpoints will crop up all over the Internet after UK MPs backed new powers to expand age verification. The only way to block under-16s is to run checks on everybody. That's millions more people having to hand over personal data to unregulated providers just to access everyday services. Papers, please! Digital ID age checks have taken another lunge forward. UK MPs have agreed to new powers to expand age verification across online platforms. More and more everyday web services will be locked behind digital checkpoints, despite the serious privacy and security risks of this system. “In less than a year, we’ve gone from proposals to check ID for porn to the prospect of checking ID to access social media or unlock everyday features such as livestreams or feeds. These online ID systems put both children and adults’ sensitive data at risk.” 🗣️ @JamesBaker@social.openrightsgroup.org for ORG. #ageverification #digitalid #socialmedia #socialmediaban #freedomofexpression #childrensbill #privacy #ukpoltics #ukpol

The UK Parliament continues to pursue an approach to online safety that doesn't work. The Australian under-16 social media ban has failed to make any difference and people have sought ways around it. Digital ID age checks come at the cost of everyone's privacy and free expression. The math ain't mathing. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/most-australian-teens-admit-social-111400429.html #ageverification #digitalid #socialmedia #socialmediaban #freedomofexpression #childrensbill #privacy #ukpoltics #ukpol

The problem of online harms lies with the underlying business models of social media platforms. Digital ID age checks do nothing to change that. We need to disrupt the advertising-driven business models built on surveillance, profiling and maximising engagement.
