James Simpson invented the use of chloroform for pain relief in childbirth in 1847. The religious authorities of the UK were outraged, as the bible clearly says god cursed women to painful childbirth. Pain relief was heresy! Simpson received death threats and chloroform was considered socially unacceptable for years, until queen Victoria availed herself of the technique. The religious argument was never resolved. Society simply decided it couldn't deal with the contradiction of the the church's holy book saying pain was a religious duty, and the head of the church choosing pain relief. So it became a non-issue. I don't think people confronted their moral objections and decided that biblical literalism was harmful. Instead, part of their religious framework became too problematic, so it was simply reclassified as "wasn't important / don't think about it". 2002 haben drei unionsgeführte Bundesländer gegen das Lebenspartnerschaftsgesetz vor dem Bundesverfassungsgericht geklagt. Sie waren sich also damals noch sicher, dass das Grundgesetz die Diskriminierung gleichgeschlechtlicher Paare im Eherecht *vorschreiben* würde. 🚨 Heads up! When conservatives say “save the children”, there is very often a rather important asterisk hiding behind it: Save the “real”™ children. The moment a child is trans, queer, gender-nonconforming, neurodivergent, different, "difficult", inconvenient, or simply fails to fit neatly into their little picture of what a child should be, suddenly the concern for children and their rights can disappear remarkably quickly. And worse: the very people screaming loudest about “protecting children” can become some of the biggest threats to those children’s safety, dignity, autonomy and wellbeing. Because apparently the child is precious right up until the child becomes a person. (Remember there are still people who think children are basically property!) Children need to be protected from people who want to harm them, shame them, hurt them, indoctrinate them, or force them into becoming someone they are not. Children aren't projects to be fixed or moulded to fit somebody else's ideology. They deserve to grow up safe, loved, and free to discover who they are, knowing that they are already good, already wonderful, and worthy of being exactly who they are. #ProtectAllChildren #TransKidsAreKids #QueerKids #LGBTQIA #TransRights #ChildrensRights #DontEraseUs

There is a reason I take the endless stream of anti-queer slurs, lies and accusations seriously. Stochastic terrorism is when people in positions of influence repeatedly spread hateful or dehumanising rhetoric about a group, creating an environment in which violence against members of that group becomes more likely - even if they never explicitly tell anyone to attack. And yes, this can and does include state actors. Calling queer people “groomers”, “predators”, “degenerates”, “child abusers”, or some other invented monstrosity is not merely “words”. When those accusations are repeated often enough, they manufacture a target. They tell the public who supposedly deserves suspicion, hatred and punishment. Words become permission. Permission becomes action. That is why “it was just a slur” is such a grotesquely inadequate defence. A lie repeated often enough can become a weapon. And when powerful people keep handing that weapon to an angry crowd, pretending not to know what might happen next is simply dishonest. Just two examples of what I am dealing with on that other “social” network I sadly need to be a member of. This is gay people trying to eradicate trans people from queer history — while apparently also appointing themselves the Supreme Court of what “normal-looking” gay men and lesbians are. 🙄 And yes, history has an ugly little lesson here. In the Weimar Republic, there were gay men who were deeply attracted to nationalist and later Nazi ideology, including people who were quite happy to distinguish themselves from the “wrong sort” of queer people. Respectability, conformity and throwing other queer people under the bus did not make them safe. It did not save them. So when I see queer people trying to scrub trans people out of Stonewall, Pride and the history of our liberation, I pay attention. Because this isn't merely about the past. They want to erase us from history because they want to erase us from reality. And finally, can we talk about the “kiddo”, “child”, “babe” routine? A grown man disagreeing with a grown person and immediately reaching for infantilising language to establish dominance is not exactly a revolutionary new contribution to human civilisation.
