@coolbean@brain.worm.pink @rose@pl.pinkro.se The problematic part in s6-sudo isn't s6-, it's sudo! 😅 It's a part of the s6 project, and it does execution across privilege boundaries, it's just that it doesn't follow anything remotely close to the sudo interface.

@rose@pl.pinkro.se I'm gonna be direct: no. You cannot drop-in replace PAM like Indiana (seemingly) does with the golden idol. But if you're interested in working on a serious PAM replacement, that would also work with static linking, hmu in a year or two, depending on what projects of mine get funded. It's in my todo list.

PSA: if a website makes you fill a form with privacy-invading questions, with data that it has no business gathering and will not help you transacting with it, and you can't/don't want to spend time and energy fighting it, calling them, looking for another site, because this is still the most convenient for you...

... it's perfectly okay to lie. Be creative. Have fun. Tell wild tales.

Chances are nobody's looking at the information anyway, it's being sold to a data broker. Being accurate won't help you in any way.

@sertonix@social.treehouse.systems IPCPATH_MAX cannot increase since there is no guarantee that a given system can hold more than 108 characters in its sun_path. If I increased it, it would break. I don't quite understand what your program is supposed to do. To pass a file descriptor to an unrelated process, you have to do fd-passing over a Unix domain socket, there's no alternative; I'm not sure what you accomplish with your directory and socket stuff.

@artemis@dice.camp Of course it's weaksauce. They are weak, and they know they are. They can't do what you're doing, because they don't have strong-held or carefully-considered beliefs. They're thought followers, not thought leaders. And so, one of the only ways they can feel stronger is when they manage to destabilize, annoy or anger someone who has their ducks in a row (or is at least trying). If they get an emotional reaction out of you? They consider that a success, because usually nobody gives them the time of day. I am powerless against these guys, because I have no patience, and I do get angry - not because they found a flaw in my belief system or anything, but because the sheer stupidity, crassness or vacuity of thought they expose makes me irrationally angry and hateful. I am not Zen enough to let things slide on me like water on a duck's feathers, and ignore them without being affected. And that's one of the things I hope to learn by reading you 😅

The TLS process on my machine (x86_64, statically linked) takes 76 kB of Private_Dirty memory per connection. Add a little overhead for dynamic linking and a little more for ARM code, but we're looking at under 100 kB of Private_Dirty per connection. bearssl is fantastic.

If you get the time and inclination, I'd be happy to know the results you get with tipidee (which is available on Alpine) and s6-tlsserver to serve it, also available on Alpine (in the s6-networking package). I wrote them thinking of low resources environments. The TLS layer is done by bearssl, for practically no RAM at all: no need to offload it 😃

RE: @iagox86@infosec.exchange

The FRP client is restarted by cron every minute if the process dies. It cannot be stopped without also removing the cron entry or undeploying the Greengrass component. Even if a user or researcher kills the process, it restarts within one minute.

You know it's gonna be good when you see half-assed supervision done via cron.

@navi@social.vlhl.dev @dalias@hachyderm.io @hailey@hails.org yeah it's just not feasible to disable the netlink on a Linux system that wants any kind of better device management than mdev as a hotplug helper. You can get away with that (or no device manager at all) in embedded boxes, but on a user machine, even a very barebones one or a server like mine, you just... need the netlink. Sometimes bugs just need to be fixed.

@dalias@hachyderm.io @alwayscurious@infosec.exchange splice is the only zero-copy mechanism available to normal users. I would hate to disable it. I'd rather disable the kernel modules one by one (for now, only relatively obscure stuff has been revealed to be broken; this may change in the future).

@faithisleaping I have questions. Did he already have this project in mind and record the treble parts (including a second voice!) before transitioning? If yes, that is incredible foresight and planning for a song 😅

skarnet.org will be down until further notice - it may take up to 10 days (!) I wanted to reboot the server on a newly tailored kernel to avoid CopyFail shenanigans. The shutdown failed right before rebooting (because of a small oversight in s6-linux-init that is easy to fix and will not impact anyone else). Normally that wouldn't be a problem: log in to the web interface to the VPS administration, press the reboot button, done. Except, Gandi added 2FA since I last logged in, and did not notify their users. And they decided that by default, the verification code would be sent to the registered primary e-mail address. My registered primary e-mail address is hosted on skarnet.org. Because it was never a possibility that it would be needed for the bootstrap chain. Except that now it is, and I can't access it. This is the dumbest catch-22 in the history of catch-22s. And the recovery procedure, when you have to prove your identity when writing to the support outside of a logged in account, can take up to 10 days. And tomorrow is a holiday. Fuck me, I guess. I should have paid more attention, but the consequences of my not paying enough attention should definitely not be so vast, and I have choice words for several of the decisions that were made.

@dalias@hachyderm.io The ACME protocol runs over HTTP(S). Yes and that's certainly a choice 🙄 but yeah, it could all be dynamic. It's just, at some point we'll have to write ACME servers, because everything enshittifies, and I'm not looking forward to it.

@dalias@hachyderm.io Well as it's currently written, the account needs to be identifiable via a URL, so it forces the ACME server to have its account tied to something in the web server. The API keys for ACME exchanges are URLs, so ACME is already tied to a web server because nobody designs anything outside of the web anymore 😭, but that's one more dependency. Having the equivalent of public keys directly in the DNS, as you suggest, would be conceptually cleaner.

@dalias@hachyderm.io I had taken a look at DNS-01 and discarded it because it was easier for me to grant the ACME client write access to a place in my served HTTP data (just a directory in the filesystem made writable to the acme user) than to my served DNS data (need to edit or assemble text files then compile a constant database, need root privileges to install the new cdb). I took a look at DNS-PERSIST-01 and yes, that looks much better on the ACME client side, but it looks like it does require more persistent state on the ACME server side. It's a tradeoff I'd be happy to make as a client, but does it really reduce the overall complexity? (Edit: typo)

@foolishowl @artemis @crow In France, where it's a roughly even three-thirds split between the left, the center-right and the far-right, the establishment is really panicking. The whole media apparatus, be it the center-right-owned or the far-right-owned, is running at full power at all times, attacking Mélenchon (the "main" figure of the left, if that means anything, but let's say at least a well-spoken and combative left politician) 24/7 with anything they can find. Unfortunately, the stuff they find isn't always harmless: Mélenchon has more skeletons in his closet than Sanders or Corbyn. The left isn't unified (what else is new) but especially not behind him. I don't know how we pull a Brazil or a Mexico. I don't think we have the right people for that.
