Happy to share that #BoxyBSD remains up! Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@mastodon.bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve. But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux@mastodon.social) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). BoxedTux utilizes #Proxmox clusters as a foundation. Hope you like this small update... Over & out! #freeVPS #VPS #VM #Hosting #education #learning #learningplatform #service #opensource #BoxedTux

The #eurobsdcon 2026 Call for Papers is still open! https://2026.eurobsdcon.org/cfp/ Submit by June 20th, come to Brussels September 9-13 and mingle with #BSD people! We also offer pre-submission guidance/mentoring, see the CFP text. Wonder what BSD and the conferences are about? Selfie, ec :runbsdBg::puffer: Sensitive
As it's a slow Friday morning, I'm watching this video from Linux Renaissance on how easy it is to install #OpenBSD. And yes, I'm wearing my OpenBSD 7.6 T-shirt this Friday. :flan_cool::puffer::runbsdBg:https://watch.linuxrenaissance.com/w/vwUQ9YZQNjNWfQqLv3LBiD #BSD #RunBSD

On #OpenBSD, the update process every six months is: # sysupgrade # sysmerge And as needed: # syspatch # pkg_add -u What are these processes for #FreeBSD?

@synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net Every year we inch closer to network whitelists being the only sane option. 😄 I'd recommend everyone get used to computing offline, and use the internet only to chat and sync stuff. I'm kinda 50% there already. Fediverse client, limited web usage, syncthing, git, and SimpleNote. That's most of my internet usage on my home computers, especially my 2010 Thinkpad (running #OpenBSD) that struggles with the modern web.

@rl_dane@polymaths.social @synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net I've recently put #OpenBSD on my daily with #XFCE and it is super smooth and fast. The only issue is the craptastic state of browsers and the web means that non-local computing constantly dumps itself. This is not an OpenBSD fault, this is the fault of the modern web. No wonder zero days can be exploited with ease. Now I have to work out my least crap option OS to install so I can interact with the shitty web while remaining protected from whatever brain fart comes from the USA political class.

@tubsta@social.bsdlab.au @synlogic4242@social.vivaldi.net firefox on #OpenBSD has gotten a lot faster in very recent versions, somehow. I think Chromium (unfortunately) is worth trying to see if it works better for you. Otherwise, look for the config option online to disable JIT JS and WASM in firefox, and turn off W^X allow for more security. ;)

@libreleah@mas.to nice to see #Wayland getting adopted more. Certainly neither it nor X are the main focus of it, but it's always good to see #OpenBSD not just getting maintenance but improving.I genuinely want OpenBSD to be more successful and force eberyone else to up their game in #ITsec

@libreleah@mas.to has submitted the #librewolf port to #OpenBSD ports so fingers crossed it won't be too long until the package is available in -current . https://marc.info/?l=openbsd-ports&m=177652909703481&w=2

I am slowly coming to understand that the reason some applications crash often on OpenBSD is not the fault of OpenBSD, but the fault of poorly written applications that have tons of vulnerabilities. OpenBSD is designed to be a secure operating system as one of its main goals, and trying to circumvent these safety guardrails by "optimizing OpenBSD for desktop use" -- i.e. tweaking sysctl.conf to the max -- defeats the purpose of having the guardrails in the first place. If you want an OS where applications are free to roam full of holes and exploits without crashing, use Linux I guess. It will happily continue to allow those poorly written programs to run, giving the user a false sense of stability. Meanwhile, I'm starting to prefer safety and security over "desktop performance at all costs". If a program misbehaves it should die, and OpenBSD will kill it before I even know it misbehaved. #OpenBSD #ProactiveSecurity

Hey fellow #OpenBSD crowd :flan_coffee: I am worried about @tedu@honk.tedunangst.com - can't get a hold of him, last CVS commits were somewhere 2025, no Fedi activity, websites down, etc. Just wanted to make sure he is okay, regardless of the reason for being inactive.

Time for a new #OpenBSD story! Investigating what appears to be a VAX bug turns out to be the consequence of a more-than-late processor design change, so brace yourselves for a VAX history lesson! http://miod.online.fr/software/openbsd/stories/vaxfp.html
