things I've been working on in regards to botanica

  • SSH over Yggdrasil, with simple one-command setup

Thanks to yggdrasil making it really easy to generate a new config, I've included a little script that

  1. Generates a config (including a new key)
  2. Sets up peers and listen directives
  3. Restarts yggdrasil to apply changes
  4. Prints out your IP Address

You can run this at any time to reset your IP.

I'll also make sure that password logins for SSH are disabled, and I'll see if I can do the same for Cockpit, so that to login you must use the cockpit "desktop" application which uses SSH under the hood. Last thing to do is make sure logins are still possible on LAN with a password, but not over yggdrasil, and guiding the user to adding through adding their key.

  • further work on figuring out proxying

the biggest issue with botanica is networking. I don't want to rely on Cloudflare, or on the end-user already having a VPS that Caddy could be installed on. Yet, I still want to have some kind of solution for people to make their servers accessible on the web with minimal effort.

At this point in time, I don't see a way around providing some kind of public proxying service, but that's difficult as I could not end-to-end-encrypt that in a way which would keep us safe. It's a Tor Exit Node situation.

hot take: if the 'unable to decrypt' meme is the only thing you have against Matrix, then the only valid alternatives you may suggest should be end to end encrypted. It honestly hardly ever seems to happen (I've never seen it), but if you're afraid it will happen to you, you can just disable end to end encryption in Matrix. Nobody forces you to use it. Even without it, it's still infinitely safer than Discord, Telegram, Revolt, etc. #Matrix

@brayd@social.brayd.blog there is always #matrix but from my experience it is way heavier than xmpp. OMEMO, the XMPP E2E thing, is/was based on the Signal (Axolotl) crypto protocol and probably doesn't work worse than what Matrix gives you in that regard. Question for the community. How's y'all's experience with various Instant Messaging services? I don't use discord except with some of my friends, and I'm trying to get away, as it seems to be going the way of enshittification. I've used Matrix before, and I'm aware of some of the technical annoyances as a user. Does it tend to have good community (like, among gay nerdy Mastodon folks at least?). What about the other options, like XMPP clients, or like Delta Chat or something? I believe I've even heard (i might be wrong) that IRC 3 allows for asynchronous texting, so you don't have to be online in order to keep receiving messages that you can read later? Is this a thing? Everytime I look this up, I can't find any good info one way or the other. Even if there's no community, I'm curious what y'all think has the potential to become a somewhat ubiquitous technology among folks on Fedi? Hi everyone! I've spent the last three days working nonstop to somehow port Fractal 14.1 to Android 12+. I forked the project specifically for this experiment. This is the original Fractal written in Rust with GTK4 and LibAdwaita. I ported it using cargo-ndk. It was quite challenging, but I finally got it working. Most people want to have private online conversations. Some also want to post publicly. I get wanting to be able to use the same account for both but trying to let everyone do so seems to be creating more problems than it solves. Lots of confusion and anger and a ton of effort to build more nuance and moderation capacity into the tools we already have and need to keep somewhat simple to encourage adoption. Perhaps build on #matrix and #ActivityPub separately. Have users list both accounts.

So because I have gone temporarily off my rocker, I'm working on an #xmpp client using #dotnet 10 and WPF, with artalk-xmpp for XMPP, libsignal for #OMEMO, and prism for screen reader output where needed. I'm only an evening into it, and I can already tell that OMEMO is going to be the source of complicated, inexplicable, and unreproducible bug reports for decades to come. It's still not as overcomplicated as #matrix, though.
