Question for the community. How's y'all's experience with various Instant Messaging services? I don't use discord except with some of my friends, and I'm trying to get away, as it seems to be going the way of enshittification. I've used Matrix before, and I'm aware of some of the technical annoyances as a user. Does it tend to have good community (like, among gay nerdy Mastodon folks at least?). What about the other options, like XMPP clients, or like Delta Chat or something? I believe I've even heard (i might be wrong) that IRC 3 allows for asynchronous texting, so you don't have to be online in order to keep receiving messages that you can read later? Is this a thing? Everytime I look this up, I can't find any good info one way or the other. Even if there's no community, I'm curious what y'all think has the potential to become a somewhat ubiquitous technology among folks on Fedi? problem web app telegram zeigt manchmal kein nachrichten an: This message is currently not supported on Telegram Web. Try getdesktop.telegram.org -> mobbing das ich die app installieren soll 🖕
problem: app hängt immer ma wieder in android - vllt zu große chats? trotzdem kacke
problem: datenschutz - warum sollen die daten über diesen dubiosen kanal laufen
problem: die chatbots können nicht einfach miteinander reden

Telegram wird langsam unbequem — App läuft schlechter, Datenschutz ist mir wichtiger geworden. Also: weg von fremden Plattformen, hin zu self-hosted. Setze Matrix (Synapse) auf eigenem VServer auf, wechsle auf Element als Client. Künftig schreibe ich direkt mit meinen KI-Agenten — und die Agenten stimmen sich untereinander in geteilten Räumen ab. Volle Kontrolle über meine Daten, E2E-Verschlüsselung, eigene Infrastruktur. Less cloud, more sovereignty. 🖥️"

Picked up Norwegian bokmål translation of Element X again. It is my preferred Matrix client and I use it on my Mac, iPhone and Sailfish phone. Progressing nicely, less than 100 strings left to translate. #Translation #Matrix #Element #OpenSource

ok I think I've finally polished off the re-done Matrix install. Don't have everything quite tidy yet as far as cleaning up test users and rooms but I've finally whittled the sign up and auth flow down to the most streamlined I can possibly make it. Authentik, auto SSO, local passwords turned off, only SSO users. Got the sign up and re-auth down to like 5 clicks total. My first go around people could barely figure out how to register with my server and not the default. #matrix #element

Not sure what happened to my desktop #Element #app (Arch Linux, rather recent updates) which couldn't accept IP address of my #Matrix homeserver now. It worked few years without problems and now something broke :/

Anyone know what causes OPEN_ID_ERROR when trying to call on matrix? Using continuwuity server with livekit, client is element X. The call appears to take ages to connect then errors after about 10 seconds with OPEN_ID_ERROR. Any ideas? #matrix #element #tech

Ok just have to figure out what it takes to get Matrix Authentication Services up and going. Sync works, Federation works, signups, captcha, all the rest. From what I can tell MAS will at least make getting the mobile apps going less of a hassle. #matrix #discord #element

I’m an admin on a pretty large and very active Discord server but we’ve spent the weekend getting a new self hosted Matrix instance setup. Things are mostly working so far. Having some issues with device registration on mobile and user sync ATM but signups are working and the bones of the services seem to be all functional. I’ll be getting our server sync scripts running this week to start syncing the Discord and Matrix instances to fully pave the migration path. We plan on likely shutting the Discord down at the end of March if everything goes well. #matrix #discord #element

@blackwolf@meow.social I just got my band set up on a #selfhosted #Matrix / #Element. This is controversial for a number of reasons - but I'm comfortable doing the grunt work to make it happen in a way I can live with. For my non-techie friends coming over, it's close enough and they picked it right up. Our needs are basic and are covered. I realise this will not fit everyone's needs, and it's a sprawling project choked with #enshittification at the moment, but if you can sift down through it all, you might find something that works. (Not very encouraging - I know. I'm sorry - it's a little dire out there.) Another alternative that I run is #xmpp. It's less like discord than most Matrix clients, but it's fast and light - time tested and has e2ee. There is also #NextCloud Talk. I don't use it much, but it works as well as xmpp or matrix in my experience.
