Vladimir Moskovkin proposes an interesting "reform model for scholarly communication that combines elements of centralized access —based on adapting the Soviet VINITI experience to the digital environment— with decentralized Diamond Open Access platforms." PS: This is the first time I've seen anyone draw the Soviet #VINITI model into #OpenAccess / #ScholComm discussions. Here's some background on the model, if it's new to you. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VINITI #Centralization #Decentralization #DiamondOA

A compelling article on the advantages of #Reticulum over #Meshtastic and #MeshCore: https://www.jonaharagon.com/posts/im-getting-into-mesh-networks-meshtastic-meshcore-and-reticulum/ Meshtastic and MeshCore make it relatively easy to set up local LoRa mesh networks, but in practice they remain largely tied to LoRa devices and messaging. Reticulum goes further: it can build a more resilient network by routing across different kinds of connections, including LoRa, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, microwave links and even the internet. Local networks can therefore interconnect while retaining alternative paths if one connection fails. Reticulum’s main disadvantage today is that standalone LoRa nodes generally need an attached computer running Reticulum. If #microReticulum can run directly on devices already used for Meshtastic and MeshCore, it could significantly accelerate Reticulum’s adoption. P.S. I found this article on Hacker News while searching for #MeshCore. The discussion there is also interesting: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=48299638 #Mesh #Decentralization

Where would you rather live? A large and well-furnished flat…but it’s a rental. How you can use it is decided by the landlord. Any modifications you want to make need to be approved by the landlord. They can increase the rent or kick you out at any time they want. Maybe the rent is low (for now), maybe the landlord is nice, but the fact remains - legally speaking, you’re at their mercy. A flat you own. It might be small, it might not have all the same luxuries, it might cost more upfront [1]…but it’s yours. There’s no limits on what you use it for (without affecting others), there’s no limits on how you can change it (without affecting others). And nobody can evict you whenever it strikes their fancy. This is a post about software freedom. [1] and the very existence of landlords and leasing is squarely to blame for that #FreeSoftware #OpenSource #FOSS #Decentralization #contraLibre

a big reminder that FOSS apps can still be centralized

some simple questions to ask:

  • if the app connects to a server, is that serverside part proprietary?
  • does the app have hard-coded servers, or can the user change them?
  • does the app promote running small instances?

"A year ago I published an article about GoToSocial, a fediverse microblogging software (think of it as an alternative to Mastodon or Sharkey) that I had been using and loving. That is still very much the case, a year and a half after I first started using it: I have a special soft spot for GoToSocial because it is the very first app I ever installed with YunoHost: the first stepping stone in my great self-hosting adventures. Therefore, no self-hosting guide for newbies would be complete without a tutorial about how to install and set-up the brilliant GoToSocial. I initially thought I would cover everything in one post, but there is so much to discuss that I will break up the tutorial in different chapters, so that the information does not get too overwhelming. This first installment will discuss: 1) picking a domain name to use 2) associating the domain name to your YunoHost installation 3) installing GoToSocial 4) doing some essential tweaks to boost security" https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-gotosocial-part-1-installation-and-set-up/ #SocialMedia #GoToSocial #Fediverse #Decentralization #SelfHosting

Some people in #Europe try to get away from #WhatsApp but fail short then just moving to #Signal, it runs on #Amazon servers and fuels millions of dollars into them every year if you really want digital independence you need something that is decentralized and you can host yourself, something that can't be taken away form you ideally something that doesn't require phone numbers #European #digitalindependence #decentralization #privacy #ArcaneChat #family

Extremely on-point post. https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/116946253995217476 I preface each OSM talk/workshop I give with a little introduction/discussion about software freedom - what are the four freedoms, and why they are important for every user (especially nontechnical ones). But I recently changed it to have a slightly broader focus - the four freedoms, decentralization, and cooperative governance - with an overarching emphasis on, as Aral says, ownership and control. #contraLibre #FreeSoftware #Libre #OpenSource #FOSS #Decentralization #Cooperatives #Privacy

Had many good discussions about #decentralization at #dwebcamp with so many interesting people. When arriving in sunny Berlin @evan@cosocial.ca (one of the fathers of the #fediverse 😉) and I realised we did not take a picture at camp 😱 Fixed that!! Wish all the fellow #dwebcamp folks a good travel!

I moved my Bluesky account to Eurosky. It was the most technical thing I have done since updating DNS records, honestly 😅 I had to deal with migrator tools, DIDs, rotation keys, recovery keys, Migration Tokens, typing in my old password, new password, old handle, new handle, "PDS Mover - Missing Blobs Importer"... There are explanations like "do not close this page!" and "monitor your email!" and "If you're wondering what 'blobs' are, that is simply what media files are called on the AT Protocol, the network that includes Bluesky, Eurosky and others." For me as a nerd, things like these are naturally part of everyday life, just like setting up DNS records or configuring services, installing servers and infrastructures, programming and so on. But they said mAsToD0n iS diFfIcUlt wHaT is A sErVeR sO cOmPLIcaTed?!! Moving a Mastodon account from one instance to another seems like a walk in the park in comparison. My mom would not know how to migrate a Bluesky account to Europe. #Bluesky #Eurosky #Decentralization #ATProto

Dezentralisierung scheint wieder en-vogue zu kommen. Artikel: Geo-distributed read-only replicas + " Langfristig plant Entire ein vollständig dezentralisiertes Git-Netzwerk." #git #Github #forgejo #decentralization #codeberg

I strongly believe all #FLOSS /#FOSS advocates should read this thread by @abbas_dp@techhub.social . We all need to learn a thing or two about the situation, the amount of efforts have been put into FLOSS and decentralization advocation behind the scenes, most importantly behind bars! Yes, you read it right. Please follow through and read the thread: https://techhub.social/@abbas_dp/116850818231544177 :boostRequest: Please boost for reach #OpenSource #Decentralization #Fediverse @delta@chaos.social @fsf@hostux.social @eff@mastodon.social

XEP-0516 "XMPP Decentralized ID (XID)" that I've authored as part of my work on metadata reduction/serverless (https://nlnet.nl/project/ServerlessXMPP/ thanks NLnet!) has been published. The goal is to have your XMPP identity independent of your DNS-based domain. At some point, it should be possible to have your XMPP account independent of your server. Note that current version has issues and will be updated soon. Work is in progress on XMPP deeper decentralization. #XMPP #NLnet #decentralization #NGI0
